Hey guys

I would like to ask what determines how good your general is? I know there are some bonuses in ideas like shock, maneuver and fire values but does it depend on other things like army tradition and military sklill of your ruler?

Army Tradition, yes.
Military skill of ruler, no.

There's a lot of randomness though, so you can still get decent leaders with low tradition, and bad leaders with high tradition.
If you have Military Power to spare, it can be a good idea to make several generals, and keep the best one (discarding the rest).

Another tip you'll need to get reasonably decent generals is to take Defensive for the Army Tradition and Innovative for the Army/Navy tradition decay bonus. After that, it's just a matter of going to war on a consistent enough basis to sustain a high army tradition.

Having high army tradition alone (even without awesome generals) can give you a massive bonus. 100.0 army tradition alone gives you 25% Land morale and land morale recover and 50% increase to manpower recovery speed. These bonuses alone give you a reason to join a lot of wars.

ah yes the randomness. I always love it when I have >50 naval tradition, hire an explorer 0,6,0 practically every time. One time I tried getting like 7 explorers in a row, right before I westernized (I was going to waste the diplo points anyways)... 7 tries, all above 50 naval tradition, the best one I got had 1 maneuver. Or the event that gives you a 50 tradition general/admiral... they always seem to be garbage.
