I've just researched this, and I want to be sure that I have the mechanics right. Because it looks as if it's really expensive to implement and I want to get it right.

1. You only get this research once. So there's only +1 trait available, per species. Ever. So why are there traits listed that cost more?

2. Which trait is the best? I thought of adding Communal to some of my problem species for the +5% happiness, but is this wise?

3. On the Situation Log, there is a countdown of Timeout. What is this?

4. The tech refers to Experimental Adaptation and Genetic Modification. Am I right in thinking that one is totally out of the player's control, and the other is the process above?

5. When I go through the process and assign a Trait, and then return my species now says -2 trait points available when previously it said +1. What is this about?

6. I am making about 200 (+/-) Social pts/mo. Yet its going to take 430 months! 36 YEARS. With no new social techs. Please tell me I am wrong about this one!

1. There's a rare tech for an extra +1, for a total +2. If you're uplifting a race, this adds up to +3. Also, you could theoretically make a race with just 5 negative traits, then when you finally get to gene mode them, have up to 10 points to play with. I believe.

2. Iunno. I usually go intelligent or thrifty. Maybe charismatic and something else, if the race doesn't need those.

3. You gotta start researching the special project before it times out...

4. Yah

5. Display bug, don't worry about it.

6. This is accurate. Better rev up that society output!

In current game iteration you aren't supposed to modify your entire species. Even single planet is a strain. More like - send colonist pop - modify for new environment and add something useful as a bonus. In case you are xenophobe of course, otherwise just wait for free gene modding event.

It's a bit weird that the strongest possible gene modding bonus is also the cheapest and easiest to accomplish.

Just thought I'd chime in and say there are tech mods which add repeatable gene techs which allow more trait points, that's if you're not one of those odd chaps who simply refuses to use mods..
