I think, upgrades in productivity are tiny late game. It's better to spam synth, rather then gen mod your people.
What is really annoying, when you are big and technologically advanced - the happiness and ED.
Some direct approach would be to save points and get the conformist trait, yet it is quite expensive and still there are so many people with wrong ethos, gen modding each misbehaving pop would cost tens of thousands of sociology research, then you need to wait until they converge to your ethos and get happy.
There is a more straight forward way: get communal right now, indirectly improving the ED situation, but 5 happiness for 400 research points isn't cheap either.
But there may be an even better hack, if you have a lot of planets with mixed population: just give some of them charismatic.
For example, on a 20 size planet with 5 pops of A race and 15 pops of race B gen modding each A to be charismatic adds 15 happiness. Instead of modding 15 pops to communal, you can mod 5 pops to charismatic and get the same effect.
