Curiously enough, female samurai were actually very common, and often fought in battle, usually along side their husbands.
Unfortunately their power diminished over time, and now you never really hear about them for a couple obvious and nonsensical reasons... :confused:

The woman in the picture was likely "onna-bugeisha," however it would have been ceremonial as by the time that picture was taken their power was almost gone and unfortunately women's roles in Japan were largely reduced to simply child bearers by that point. Not a great time in their history.

Over time they stopped including them in literature and such, and it's all quite depressing. Thankfully with the internet people are starting to remember them, but they're still surprisingly unknown, given they're the classic story of female warriors.
But that can be said for so many of the latter... :confused:
