Difficulty: Normal/Normal Gold: 98 ducats Diplomats: 1 (I changed the files, Prussia starts with zero, but I needed a helping hand in the beginning). Vassilized to Poland-Lithuania.

“I arrive at the old castle at Königsberg, the Grandmasters old adviser has been “retired” since he could not accomplish what they needed. The Grandmasters need guidance, which I am to provide. The Grandmasters find themselves intrigued by my vision of a united Germany with them ruling the land.

The Prussian army is pathetically small, but it is adequate for the job it is to undertake for the moment. On the very same day that I am officially is promoted to reichschancellor, I advice that the Grandmasters declare war on Courland, Courland is a small country vassilized by the Teutonic order and a standing army of the same size as ours. The Prussian army marches the same day. A battle ensues at the gates of Riga, in which the Prussian army is victorious, as it shall be for centuries to come. The commander orders the city to be besieged, which he does competently. But disturbing news arrive on the 28th of October, that our supreme lord, the king of Poland-Lithuania has declared war on Courland. This is not good; I realise, since the Polish armies are much, much stronger then ours, and would probably get the province if I do not act. Being a man of action I send a message to the Prussian commander besieging Riga and orders him to make a general assault, and on 25th of December, the lord truly works in mysterious ways letting our first conquest to happen on the Christmas day, Riga falls. Te Deum will be sung in the Cathedral tonight. Gracefully I let the Courland nobility and merchants have the same rights as Prussian ones. Courland is ours, with its many merchants it will be an important addition to the true German Empire, and I can hear the polish king gnashing his teeth in frustration….many more polish kings will do that in the years to come.

The problem now is that we are almost completely surrounded by Poland, we need lebensraum. So I start sending envoys to other German principals, of offers of royal marriage, but only Brandenburg accepts. Most countries hate us for the annexation of Courland. That is the price you pay for success.
On the 2nd of August in the year of our lord 1501 we sign an alliance with Brandenburg. The only problem is that the Brandenburg nobility refuses to become vassals of us since we share no common border. Damnation. During the years that follow we nourishes our relationship with Brandenburg until they are our dearest friends. And then it happen, the miracle we have prayed for, on the 30th of April 1516, a messenger arrives, with news that the elector count of Brandenburg, has died without heirs, and that the Grandmaster is his closest relative. Brandenburg is no more; they are now a part of Prussia. The only problem is that Poland separates the two halves of the kingdom. How will I solve that? The following years are spent building up a respectable army and infrastructure.

On the evening of the 4th of October in 1522, dire news arrive, Poland, supported by France, Savoy, the Papalstates and Scotland, declare war on us. This is not good, not good at all. Since nobody likes our nation, we have not been able to forge an alliance. So none will help us. What is good though is that the vassilisation with Poland ends.
I have to calm the grandmaster down as he wishes to ride forth and give battle, though I manage to persuade him that we are not strong enough to take on such an alliance. I dig deep in the treasury, and pay an indemnity to Poland to leave us alone, which succeeds. Two years later Poland takes western Pommerania from Hansan. We are getting more and more encircled by Poland; this is not good at all.

On the 1st of January 1525, Thüringen as the first country converts to the new and intriguing Protestantism. Two years later Schweiz, Hansan and Sweden converts. Albrecht becomes our new elector count. And on the good side, on the 4th of April 1528 I join the Russian and Danish alliance, good news indeed, we are not alone anymore.

During this time wars have been raging throughout Europe, going in the disadvantage for England having lost three provinces to Scotland, France are losing against Spain, having lost three provinces. And Sweden, almost completely eaten up by Denmark and Russia.

In 1535 Russia eats up Kazan. She is getting big now, having conquered almost all of Finland and are cutting through her southern neighbours.

Time flies, when you have nothing to do, the kingdom almost runs itself. On the 26th of May 1537 I decide that it is time to embrace Protestantism. But another disturbing news arrives on the 27th of April 1540, that Poland also gets eastern Pommerania by the Hansan, this is most disturbing.

In 1559 Jean Calvin starts to preach and England converts immediately, and rebellion starts to bloom in the Spanish possessions in the Netherlands. The aftermath of the English conversion is that Hannover, having been annexed earlier becomes independent from English rule

WAR! On the 25th of July 1560 Russia declares war on a Teutonic order without allies, Denmark doesn’t honour the alliance, but Prussia keeps her promises. Our well-trained army is ordered to march on Memel and Dorpat. Memel falls early on the 11th of April 1561.
A side note is that Austria militarily annexes Böhmen on the 21st of June 1561, this is not good, since I now have another major power bordering to me.
The sieges drag on, but after a long siege Dorpat finally falls to the ever-victorious armies of Prussia on the early afternoon the 2nd November 1563, after a general assault has been ordered. Peace negotiations begin, but end after I threaten to march the armies towards Reval, if they do not agree to surrender Memel and pay a ransom for Dorpat. Russia will have to continue the war on her own.”

Feedback please.
I have yet to write down the rest of the AAR, but it should be complete by the end of the week.

Gut gemacht, indeed! But You also were VERY lucky! :) Inheriting Brandenburg, which is by no means a scripted event in the game so far and not likelier than inheriting anything else, borders on being a miracle. But, of course, it makes for a more 'Prussian' game and that´s nice.

Regards, Hartmann

Prussian AAR part 2

“ The Prussian kingdom has grown considerably since I took over guardianship of this glorious nation. I now consist of two parts of each three provinces, the old Brandenburgian one, with Magdeburg, Brandenburg and Küstrin. The other part is the Prussian one, which is made up of Easter Prussia, Memel and Courland. This gives us a good base to work with, the provinces has high populations and bring in trade revenues as well as taxes.
If the provinces are the heart of Prussia, then the armour is her armies that at this time consists of four different armies, one each in Courland, Eastern Prussia, Küstrin and Brandenburg.

For the following years all warfare on my part is trade war, in Danzig there is a fierce war fought between Poland Sweden and myself. All of which at some point have monopoly. Sweden is the first one to give in and withdraw her merchants from Danzig. Riga on the other hand is all mine, if someone tries to establish a presence there I ban them from trading in Prussia.

On the 23rd of April in the year of our lord 1565, words arrive that Spain has completely annexed the Inca kingdom, which is no concern of mine. I care not if heretics are put to the sword or fire, it is good if they learn the to worship the true faith, in whatever form it might be.

Many wars are fought at this time across Europe. None of which draws me into conflict; most only ends in status quo or a small indemnity paid to either side. On the 1st of January Albrech Friedrich is crowned Elector count of Prussia.

Poland this seemingly unstoppable behemoth turns her eyes northwards and engages in a war with the Teutonic order, which already is in war with Russia. And on The 17th February 1571 Poland, with the exception of Ingermanland, which becomes Russian, annexes the Teutonic order, that leaves Prussia as the only nation that Poland has a Casus Belli on. We are now even more encircled by this spiteful nation. War is soon unavoidable.

Russia is the one that starts the war, by declaring upon Poland on the 28th of April 1571. I quickly accept the war and the well-oiled machinery that is the Prussian army marches on Poland. Stralsund and Thorn is put under siege of the Brandenburgian army and the Königliche army. The sieges have dragged on for some time and Thorn is close to falling, when my scouts report to me of a huge polish army of some eighty thousand men are sighted. That is the combined strength of the entire Prussian army. Not wanting my armies destroyed one by one, and not really having achieved anything in the way of conquests. I send an envoy to the Polish king asking for peace. Which he accepts.

The trade war continues after the real war, with neither side winning the upper hand for an extended time.
The meeting of Trent occurs, Spain and Austria is the two first nations to become counter-reformed. This is very threatening to Prussia, since the western part of Prussia borders with Austria. Not good at all, I have to watch those Austrians carefully. Astrakhan is annexed by Russia, and I take it she starts to explore eastwards.

WAR!
Poland declares war upon us the 25th of July 1583. Russia intervenes on our side, and the Prussian armies march yet again, one on Warsaw and one on Stralsund. Several skirmishes are fought between small detachments, but no major engagements. Stralsund falls to our glorious armies in the early morning the 4th October 1584. Poland begins to send envoys for status quo. I send them back without even hearing their message.
During this war Holland appears including the Flanders. It is though soon lost to the Spaniards as they have many former French provinces nearby to draw recruits from.
Finally Warsaw falls into Prussian hands on the 22nd of June 1585; the city has been abandoned so hastily by the Polish court that they forgot to pack the crown jewels. In the peace settlement they have to hand over Western Pommerania and a huge ransom for the crown jewels, some 400 ducats are paid which will greatly help to rebuild the Prussian armies.
During this war something interesting happened, a sixty thousand strong polish army, of which some forty thousand is cavalry, marches to….Berlin(!) and start to besiege it. Why? I do not know. But I send a small detachment to Eastern Pommerania to disrupt supplies. When peace is settled, there only remains some ten thousand cavalry.

The 6th October 1586 Sweden supported by Holland and Osmanic Empire declares war on Russia and myself, I quickly sign a separate peace treaty with Sweden, leaving only Russia for Sweden to deal with.

Nothing much happens for the following twenty-five years except that Albert Freidrich dies prematurely and that the Tolerans edict is agreed upon.

So again on the 24th October 1610 Russia ones again declares war on Poland, I honour our alliance, but to our disappointment Poland sues for a Status Quo peace with Russia, which is agreed on, and the black Prussian armies march home again.
In 1618 Johann Sigismund is our new elector count, nothing happens during his short two-year reign, and in 1620 Georg Wilhelm is our new elector (I suppose that this is the first Hohenzollern).

In late 1624, Poland refuses to trade with us anymore. This gives us a perfect excuse for war. Which I decide to use on the 2nd April 1625, Russia supports us yet again. The Leib guards and the Neumark regiment are ordered to march in the front of our armies as we yet again lay siege to Warsaw, and this time also Danzig. The aim for our war is to conquer Danzig and its merchants.
Warsaw falls early to a general assault, but the price Danzig, refuses to surrender for a long time, but after my siege artillery consisting of some seventy guns arrive, the fortresses bastions are quickly breached and it surrenders. Peace is agreed upon on the 27th October 1627 and there Danzig is to become Prussian and Belgorod is to become Russian.

My first leader appears in 1630, Fredrick Wilhelm (the crownprince I assume?), and when Russia declares war on Poland in 1636 he is very useful.
France supports Poland this time though. Put it can not thwart the Warsaw falls to Fredrick Wilhelms Prussian Leib guard on the evening the 19th of May 1636 after a general assault is ordered. Two other Prussian armies have begun besieging Thorn and Kolberg at this time, and Fredrick Wilhelm arrives at Thorn with his black Leib guard and the Neumark and Jäger regiments at Thorn on the evening of 29th July the same year, after a forced march. Fredrick Wilhelm orders a general assault the day after and Thorn falls. His elite regiments rest for a day, and then makes another forced march to Kolberg, which is assaulted the day after his arrival and falls on the morning of the 20th September the same year. Three assaults within four months. Poland sues for peace and Eastern Pommerania and Western Prussia is surrendered to Prussia.

The Prussian elector count Georg Wilhelm is crowned at Warsaw as the King of a United Prussia.
Prussia is now the dominant Power in northern Europe.'

Poland seems to be in shambles now, who is to the west of Prussia? Maybe you consider picking off smaller opponents before tangling with other large powers.
