The suppression values of self-propelled variants have been about cut in half in patch 1.9.3: https://hoi4.paradoxwikis.com/Land_units#Unit_types

How do you think does that change optimal garrison templates with and without LaR?

I'm still very skeptic of the idea that armored formations should somehow be great for garrisons; whether it be tanks, armored cars or self-propelled variants. Why are 500 guys in 60 armored cars better than 1000 mechanized or motorized infantry? What use are heavy self-propelled gun pieces when fighting some local militia?

I can get behind armoured cars, cavalry, motorized/mechanized infantry for suppression. Outdated tanks, like FT-17 were also used in rear areas.
But anything modern, or SPG/AA would be used in proper on map units and not in garrison duty.

What makes armoured cars good at garrison duty is their mobility off and on the road, less fuel consumption than a usually heavier half track, integral arms and armour, so they tend to minimize the disadvantages of the other options.

I still think PDX botched the Balance of the system though.

Yeah, suppression values on armor variants should be cut out altogether, how exactly do you perform garrison duty with Stug batalion or self propelled artillery?
Light tanks are fine and historic, but heavier types arguably less so.

I think after the reduction of garrison losses per patch 1.9.1 the optimal template is just any horse template without support (Number of Hores Batallions doesn't matter, the stats are averaged).
If you can spare some research and Army XP you can add MP to the template and make it as big as you can afford. (With MP bigger is better)

Other garrison templates are flavor or special cases. (Maybe in states with harsh laws because of resources.)

Well, it doesn't per say... but for Soviets and Germany it does....
Partisan issues? Just drive the SPA battalion to a nearby hill... and then the Partisan issue is GONE

Guaranteed 100% success, as seen in Hungary and Warsaw, that will certainly crush any and all resistance in the region, and pacifies the population of the cities!

(Note: This is is joke about German and Soviet way of dealing with partisans under their reigns)

Prior to the nerfs, optimal suppression templates looked like this in order from lowest cost to greatest protection:
  • Cavalry
  • Medium SPAA
  • Armored cars
  • Medium SPAT
  • Medium tanks
Now, optimal suppression templates simply look like this:
  • Cavalry
  • Armored cars
  • Medium tanks
It's a bit sad that the devs decided to reduce the amount of viable options. On the other hand, flakpanzers being so great at suppression was kind of absurd.

Actually, I could kind of see suppression for SPA. They could be (IRL) be in rear areas providing AA or behind the front for support fire, and certainly if you have pistols and rifles, you have to account for where the SPA's are before starting any horseplay.

In game terms, I never put them in garrisons anyway, too valuable & expensive for that.

I've never really felt the need to build a dedicated garrison template other than the all-cav division that most countries start with. Maybe I'm missing something?

The more mobile the force is, the more suppression it can produce per manpower invested. Today, civilian police forces depend on vehicles to spread their enforcement across large areas. Without them, they would require many times the number of officers walking the beat in most cities.

To reflect this, maybe PDX should reduce the suppression of leg infantry and tanks and tank variants. The walking infantry cannot suppress much farther than they can walk in thirty minutes or so and the heavier tank units require to much maintenance and cannot pursue resistance into most terrain types they will hide in. A primary defense against tanks is to be where they cannot go.

Armored cars are much lighter, can get around better, and when necessary drop off four or five infantry to continue the pursuit into terrain that the resistance is certain to run into, like buildings, woods, rough terrain, etc..

This also makes trucks, mechanized units, and even cavalry more suitable for suppression than leg infantry or tank type units.

Suppression should require a lot of deployed manpower or equipment that greatly reduces the manpower needed.

Hate the reduction of suppression for tank variants.

Now if u dont buy La Res you are forced to spend the double IC for light tanks if u want hardness for your garrisons.
That is a cheek.

I think a spAA with a 2cm flakvierling spend 1800 suppression per minute.
So everyone in front of the barrels would be totally suppressed.

Is it now finally possible to spend outdated tanks to the garrisons divisions?
In 1.9.2 they take the newest stuff even if the are the to prewar FT17.

Yes. By editing the Template Equipment. Uncheck New Equipment and scroll down and check which equipment you want that template to use.

Hoping someone can post a screenshot of what I'm describing.

SpAA was not used for anti Partisan Activity, except when attacked by them.
AC would do the job as well.

Is this described in the change log? Because my new equipment still goes to garrison despite asking them not to in 1.9.2
