Wow, that was a harsh review. This guy was probably looking for Victoria: Total War or something . . .

It's strange he had all these CTDs, I must say I never had a CTD in VIC.

Also, VIC has nothing in common with Civ, except it reads the same if you reverse the three letters :D , and both are strategy games.

I can't believe my brethern in print. They have no context. I review games on the following criteria:

1. Does the design do what it claims?
2. Do the mechanics support the design?
3. Is it fun?

I hate ratings but, if forced, I'd give Victoria, at its present state, 8/10.

now that makes me mad! I would like to sue him for this purely negative review. This guy started writing this review with only on goal in mind - to make the game look bad. I just can't belive GameSpy would allow to release such a review. Victora has flaws but there is much much potential(something not described)...i can't even imagine how many poor readers will be tricked by this review(thus mybe never buying this great game).

I'm really stunned right now  ... (about CTD's - this game is one of the finest examples of Paradox Games, me, being a modder have to run countless test-runs and have experienced only a handful of CTD's during that time)

No CTD ????

The thing is more explosive than a barrel of nitro...

I have an average of 1 CTD per 1/2 hour, 1.01 & 1.02 both !!!
I recall seeing something about a problem with the french version. Fortunately, being in the same region as the game developer seems to be an advantage. :p

Back to the original topic. This game review voted Rise of Nations as game of the year for real time strategy and Galactic Civ as game of the year for turn base strategy. I own both games and I can say those two would not be what I would've voted for. I guess what I see in a game does not match what the reviewer sees but the competition must've been pretty crap if Galactic Civ can be game of the year.

He has a point, though.
Micromanagement is unamanageable in this game.
You have to make hundreds or even thousands of pop assignments/promotions etc just in one game..
Why can't the job assignment take place automatically?
It is not realistic that a king tells 50,000 farmers to become clerks. Nor is it adding any extra worth to the gameplay. It's just a useless clicking operation you have to go through.

While everyone is entitled their opinion this guy doesn't seem to know what he is talking about.

Oh and I also used to have CTDs with all of Pardox products. I was using the highest Screen Resolution, now I always use the standard resolution and so far haven't had a single CTD.

Like someone mentioned, being in the same region as the DEV helps, example:

I've had no CTDs with Victoria. PERIOD. And it's not like I haven't played it enough :D

EDIT: Oh, and apparently that >i d i o t< reviewer hasn't discovered the pause button... sheeesh

I haven't had a CTD either and I'm in America.

This was a harsh review. But I guess you can't expect to get them all good, and I don't think he's the smartest reviewer, either. :eek:o

Edit :
From the Review Page
Even fans of Europa Universalis will likely be turned off by the near-unmanageable gameplay and frequent crashes.

I will have to use the evil smiley :
Victoria is much more stable than Eu2 was at the 1.02 patch.

Has anyone noticed the system he used to play the game? holy smokes, I wish I could afford that! then again, if Vicky doesn't like it, I don't want it.

His comment about the graphics of the game... Well, using Gamespy score system, he gets a 4 in IQ :D

ahh, so i the board is honoured with a writer from Wargamer? Just goes to show that the superior people end up on these boards. myself not included ;) .

about the review. what an anus head.

He obviously didn't find the pause button.

he includes games that have nothing to do with victoria, play nothing like victoria, and are anally retentive apart from Imperialism.

Even the screen shots he put in were possibly the worst he could dig up.

I got angry at the guy just reading this filth. wish i knew how to send that website a virus.

I think that these guys really need to be weeded out, there seems to be a massive amount of fools in the reviewer world these days, most of the good ones are in the smaller concerns that i have noticed.

Rarely will a complex strategy game get a good review. Games like EU and Vic require thought. They have to be played a number of times before you get the hang of them. Most reviewers will not spend he time necessary to understand such a game.

I have had CTD problems too, but fewer with 1.02.

We all know Victoria has problems, but jeez, did he even play the game? That was really one moronic piece of writing, I sure am crossing GameSpy out of my list of sites whose reviews I need to check before buying the game.

what I learned of gamespy =

first click = then get massive amount of X box and Nokia engage = then something about "making an even complexer game compared to MOO3",

in the end something about "EU2 fans won't like the micro management game", "unstable, crashing",

the reviewer =

a protoplasmic bacteria - biassed by nature - trying to proove that black equals white,

I don't understand gamespy, we should demand they re-reviewed their own silly review! what a crap, gamespy!
