A bad property of single elimination is that it allows for negative voting, i.e. voting against candidates you do not like. So while first past the post is bad it is in my opinion still better than single elimination. More sensible methods include having a two or three round voting (where you eliminate candidates after eahc round) and prefferential voting (where you rank your favourite candidates).

I think preferrential voting would be best, but that would be a one-time vote and not require you to visit the website every day to make a new vote. Plus, more people can relate to a single elimination bracket system trying to emulate a sport's playoff.

It's good to see CK being put up against mainstream titles, it shows how far Paradox games have come over the years for CK2 to be released as a finished product and accessible to new players. However, I'm glad it's not getting too much attention; once games with a lot of depth become too popular they tend to be dumbed down to appease the casual players.

It is really a good game, but The Walking Dead should win the whole thing. Best game for.. years!

TWD isn't a good game. It is an awesome experience and shows us a glimpse of what games like this could do, if developers would at least try to bring in emotions here and there, but as a game it has many flaws.

Far Cry 3 seems to be very good and I would probably play it by now, if I wouldn't plan to start a new CKII game with an Islamic family. But comparing CKII and FC3 makes no sense whatsoever. Both ab basically as different from each other as games can be. It's like comparinmg a semi-truck with an Ferrari. Both are vehicles of some kind, but they are built for completely different purposes.

The gamespot game of the year thing is random so it's not going to be biased (apart from what their initial list is). There's various advantages and disadvantages of single vs double elimination.

Perhaps they chose single elimination because it reduces tedium for the voters and reduces the chances/impact of voter fraud (double the same size for each round assuming the same number of votes happen total). Regardless in this case people can't just assume that double elimination is better in every single way, while it may represent an overall improvement there may actually be quite technical reasons they chose single elimination format.

BTW, here's the video on how the voting was selected

I think a moderator should merge this into Regina's thread.

We are currently on 11.6% which would be an bitter defeat. Please everyone vote! And those who are not yet registered please register on Gamespot & vote!
