To be honest, FarCry 3 has a good chance of winning the whole thing. It is an INCREDIBLE game.
CK2 is up for Gamespot's Strategy GOTY also, I think it has a good shot winning that one.
It is really a good game, but The Walking Dead should win the whole thing. Best game for.. years!
Single elimination tournaments are a stupid way to select something like the game of the year. I am not sure which is the best way, but am certain it is not single elimination.
Single elimination is superior than first past the post method. It allows players to keep voting for their favorite title after their first pick is eliminated, helping to prevent a minority winner. It doesn't reflect 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place very well, but for this contest only the winner matters.
I love the walking dead, as it has an incredible narrative, but it isn't exactly the most replayable game which came out this year.
It's a great achievement for CKII to make the shortlist considering what's been posted in the past few days about many game awards not even having a category for strategy games yet alone considering them GotY material.
The Walking Dead vs. Journey really deserves to be the final, that's such a ridiculous first round match up. Voted Journey because TWD is inevitably going to win and deserves to win the whole thing really.
If anyone's got a PS3 and hasn't played Journey go do it now. I don't know if it'll have the same effect as it did a couple of months back because a lot of what made it a masterpiece was how it incorporated multiplayer.
As for voting method, I suppose the best way would be letting people rank them I guess?

A bad property of single elimination is that it allows for negative voting, i.e. voting against candidates you do not like. So while first past the post is bad it is in my opinion still better than single elimination. More sensible methods include having a two or three round voting (where you eliminate candidates after eahc round) and prefferential voting (where you rank your favourite candidates).
I agree on the anti-voting. Games like Call of Duty are going to have as many people voting for "the game that isn't Call of Duty" as people voting because they genuinely like the game its up against. It doesn't really matter that much though, it's just a video game popularity contest.
