After you learn the game, it is not difficult to beat the AI. Specially after you blob big in size.

There are some mods that can increase difficulty. For example, HMOV2 has been called elitist by some I:R pundits.

But your ultimate challenge in I:R is MP. I have been playing everyweek for the last two years and it is always very challenging.

If you want a challenging start, pick some minor next to a major power such as the Egyptian vassal Dodekaschoinos or Sabinia. It won't be impossible due to the ai being the ai, but it won't be a cakewalk and you might die a couple times before you succeed.

I‘m having a hard time expanding as Epirus at the moment - I‘m surrounded by a large Thrace, Rome, Carthage, Egypt, and a massive defensive pact of tribes…

It‘s really fun, and it‘s also an AAR and has been for a while.

Of course, I‘m not sure how good I am at Paradox games.

Playing on regular mode is nice, but when I do Ironman, it gets tough and repetitive as Judea, and I'm trying to get the Kingdom of David Achievement, which requires the Ironman Mode.

The issue is that as Judea on Ironman you have to do alot of a certain set of actions for setting up your kingdom, like choosing the right policies. Then you need to fight wars well. My goal is to clientize Antigones in my first war, which I did once on Ironman, but I wasn't using the Cloud savegame version (you have the option to save to your Cloud or not), so the achievements didn't turn on. And this is a tough goal, because Antigones' army is tougher than mine, and I have to take and hold their capitol, and do it again if they move their capitol when the Seleucids make a peace deal with them. And if in the course of this war something goes wrong, like Antigones' army beating my army, then I have to start all over from Day 1, resetting all my policies, etc. etc. etc. So it becomes super repetitive and time consuming to play on Ironman Mode, when it would be easier to just accomplish Achievements without the Ironman mode requirement.

Honestly what I find most disappointing in regards to how the AI works is how passive it overall is (Rome is the only notable exception). Ai seems to be a little more aggressive on higher difficulties. However sometimes it can be suicidaly more aggressive and attack you even if it has the odds against him. For your first couple of runs standard difficulty is OK put then you can crank the difficulty a notch.

Part of the issue is which kingdom you play as, like Rome or Egypt (easy players) or something small like Judea or Venedia (north Poland).
In my case, Ideally I would get the KIngdom of David achievement as Jduea, but it's been pretty hard to start out strong with them, not to mention the challenge of fighting bigger players.
