Gamersgate and Steam versions completely separate?

As far as I understand, if you own CK2 on Gamersgate, you should buy EU4 on Gamersgate too, or else the converter won't work, and the same for Steam. Does that mean the versions are completely separate? I'm just asking because I will most probably buy it on Gamersgate. Will it be possible for a Gamersgate EU4 to play with a Steam EU4 on multiplayer?

There will be no GG EU4. If you pre-order from GG you will get a steam cd-key, same as everywhere else.

The only difference is in the CK2 preorder bonus, which will be GG or Steam, dependent on where you pre-order.

The problem is that the converter is a CK2 DLC, so you need to preorder on the site you bought CK2 from to get the right converter. EU4 has nothing to do with it and is the same wherever you buy it from.

The CK2 converter is the only difference. Because the converter is actually CK2 DLC, there are different versions of it: one for steam CK2 and one for GG Ck2

EU4 is steam only.

Not on GG. If it's not Gamersgate, it's Steam.

If your CK2 is on Steam, then yes, pre-order on Steam, so that way you're converter DLC will be for the Steam version of CK2.

Or really ANYWHERE except Gamersgate. Green Man Gaming, Gamestop, Amazon, Paradox Webshop... you name a place that sells it, and so long as it's NOT Gamersgate, it's all going to take you to Steam.

The converter is not out yet anywhere. The free CK2 copy has been handed out if you bought from either Gamersgate (get a GG version if CK2) or Steam directly. I have not heard whether the CK2 copy has been distributed if you bought from any of the other vendors.

As stated above (and in about a dozen other threads now), only a purchase through Gamersgate will net you a Gamersgate CK2 converter DLC. You can (in addition to your GG CK2) install your Steam version of CK2 with your Steam version of the converter DLC and then convert by loading up your file there. The two downsides to that are: (1) you now have CK2 installed twice and (2) The converter has a couple of "special features" only enabled if you have the Sunset Invasion DLC turned on, so if you were playing with it on GG and do not own it on Steam, you're out of luck.
