The only reason I can think of is that it's more likely that Steam will be around longer than GG as GG is a minor player in the industry. But having said that, you can download the install files from GG and if you save them on your computer/dvd it doesn't matter if GG goes under.

Why does it have to be so hard to just buy a game with your credit card???:mad::confused:

Seriously?

I mean SERIOUSLY?

Are you for real?

Omg.

It takes like two seconds to register and make a payment, and unless I am mistaken you pay direct with your credit card and only use paypal or paynova as an alternative if you are using a debitcard instead.

Its one of the most uncomplicated services ive ever encountered.

Yes. Im fairly sure it is. Fredrik who is CEO of Paradox is also CEO of GamersGate, or at least GamersGates forum (HERE ON PARADOX FORUMS) he signs his posts "Fredrik, CEO GamersGate", not "Fredrik, CEO Paradox Interactive". So unless he's lying of course, or stupid and made a mistake, im fairly sure thats an indicator that GG is Paradox owned and operated; just because the have non PI games for download doesnt mean that it isnt.

So again why would you use Steam to download PI games when you can DL them from GG which is a part of the overall umbrella of PI?

I dont hate Steam btw. I just dont like it for one single reason, I was FORCED to have it when i bought a DVD copy of Empire Total War, and it NEEDS to run in the background when u play the game thus uselessly wasting resources.

This is pointless and needless. I dont like it. Thats why.

Paradox Interactive and Paradox Entertainment was the same thing years ago, but they split and Paradox Interactive bought themselves free from Paradox Entertainment.

GG was created by Paradox Interactive.

Paradox Interactive's old CEO took over the GG project completly and gave over the management of Paradox Interactive over to Fredrik.

Paradox Interactive technically, AFAIK still belong to the CEO of GG.

So in summary - yes, buying a game from GG support Paradox Interactive directly and with more money for each game sold than if you bought the game from Steam.

It seems from most of the steam bashers they are very picky at minor details and overlook many issues of GG. Also if you knew how to use Steam you don't need to download the game everytime to use it. Once it is downloaded you can back it up so you do not need to download and move it to different computers.
I get the feeling that many have not used it very recently since major improvements have been made and also do not know how to use it properly.

Also I enjoy the Paradox games and have found them great games but I am not going to purchase a product from GG just because Paradox has a link to it. If a company is good enough to turn a profit from a product they will make one no matter what platform it is purchased from as long as it is distributed properly.

altough i mostly agree with klewers post i do have to say that i HATE that for some games bought via Steam you need to be online and Steam running to play...that is just annoying and for ppl with slower computers of low bandwith might for a problem with playing the game...

Because everyone of the require an extra password, that i might max. use ones a year so ofc i can't remember it, and thoes stupid "questions" is the real security threat, so there is no way of putting up a question, that isn't either to easy to guess for someone else and at the same time possible to remember... I ones bought things from cd-wow, then they got Paynova and now i only use Amazon...

But i got it to work, although i had to do it through Paypal, which i REALLY don't like to use, because there are millions of really well made fake paypal emails out there.

Why the hell can't they just do like Steam and Amazon, make it possible to buy a game in less than a bleeding hour. (took 10 attempt to get it through and paypal registration still failed :s)

So unless GG gets it's act together HoI will be the last game i ever buy through them...

so tell me which Issues Gamersgate has ?

Download Game, Activate, Play ... its a fire and forget thing.
i bought numerous games from GG aswell as Steam and funny enough, only Steam ever made problems(for example, game not available for some bloody reason which only a reboot fixes...), oh and just for the record, i did use steam recently(ETW)...and yes, it still has those "game not available issues from time to time".
just 1 week ago i had another Problem with and X3 - Terran Conflict. all i wanted to do was do a clean reinstall...eq. remove the game through the steam launcher and then redownload and new install ... well, after playing around with that GUI for 30min. where it wouldnt delete the local content i simply deleted the game folder which fucked up the steam launcher big time .. in total it took me a whole hour just to uninstall a game ... so dont go on how great steam is and whatnot ...

You sure you set up steam right? And what OS are you using? I only remember having some problems back in the day on XP, but never on Vista (other than HoI2 keeps crashing when i'm taking Moscow  - damn you XP games :D)...

And sometimes your computer just fails and you have to rebot, that's perfectly normal?? But Steam is a very nice program, but if you piss it of, it'll will have it's vengance ;)

You should remember that there has never in the history of software been made a good OS, so everything just goes wrong ones in a while, that doesn't mean it's Steams fault, might just mean you computer is up for getting formatted (if you play loads of games all the time you should do it twice a year at least). Might in general be an idea if you are waiting for HoI3 and you computer isn't the best in the world to format your system, i'm thinking about doing mine (if i can find my bleed'n win disc :D).

Just imagine in 10(x) years when Steam goes down for some reason(Economic Breakdown V, the Bubble strikes back).

And you want to play your old games.

Not like you cant keep the files around and crack em if you want/can, but files from GG you can just keep on Harddrive/DVD whatever much easier, without requirement to connect and authenticate somewhere.

personally, i prefer GG to steam for HOI-like games. I use both quite frequently, however for different applications. Most mainly online games like many source games is handy to have on steam for automatic updates. Gamersgate excels in that you can skip the DRM since games like HOI3 (and most PI titles) do not require online authentification each time you run the game and do not require an internet connection to play. When updates are less frequent and will not stop you from playing if you delay to install them (unlike many online games) GG is superior imho. Also, as a side-note, Paradox Interactive is hands down my favorite developer/publisher company and I enjoy the fact that by purchasing through GG, Paradox gets a bigger cut at no extra cost to me.

Steam is a real pain. I have had auto-logon on my desktop pc for ages and now that I bought a laptop a year ago I tried to install steam and logon to find out I had forgotten my password. Now I tried to retrieve it from steam, but I have also forgotten the answer to my security question... And now I can't get my games from Steam to my laptop. Even when I am on my desktop it won't let me get my password..

One thing to note, and correct me if I am wrong- Isn't steam less mod friendly? I recall seeing on various modding sites that X mod wont work on Y game because the mod alters something that ticks off the DRM. To me that would make the difference simply because I rarely play games these days that are not heavily modded to increase the difficulty etc.

its true in some cases i guess...only steam game i ever played that was modded was Empire Total War ...but those were only slight modifications ... but that worked at least(well, it worked if i got it to actually launch the game)

Will not use steam. we have our own matchmaking server.

Thank you so much for that.

I had my first Steam experience this week when my son bought "Left 4 Dead" and Steam is a required logon EVERY time you play, even when playing in single player mode.

So far Steam has given him 2 BSOD's since the install along with slowing his internet connection down.

A required client install from steam, with a required agreement for Spyware means I will never put any steam products on my computers...my sons machines are his business.
