So your problem is not Steam, but Empire: Total War... And you really have to have a wierd computer if you can run Empire, and still have so few resources that Steam would be a problem...

If you got a problem with EA (like the rest of the world!!) then don't blame it on Steam :)

GG might well be linked with PI, and be like Steam is to Valve, the difference is Steam is way more developed than GG..

If you had 10-20 games that needed Steam, you would be happy if you 10-20 other games would run on Steam as well since it's a million times easier to have an overview of your games..

As far as I am aware Fredrik is still the CEO and still owns something like a 20% share in the company. So its still his company isnt it? Thus its still Paradoxes own service basically and thus still my choice downloader.

Not to mention its really simple and easy to use and not a must run to play program like steam.

EDIT:
Thats not the point blood_lazio.

The point is that theres no need for it at all. Its supposed to be a digital download service not a program that needlessly wastes my resources.

Yes my computer can handle it but I dont see why it needs to do this in the first place? Online play? Fine then you could start it up before u start the game if you know your going to play online like what you would do with GameSpy or Xfire...
You should NEED to have it running to run the games you have paid for, its ridiculous.

I don't think you will need to have Steam running to play HoI3... Just tell it to make a desktop shortcut after installation and it should run through that..

im assuming that it will have built in multiplayer mode and wont rely on steam ... no, lemme rephrase that, i pray to god that it wont use steam ...

amen!

Will not use steam. we have our own matchmaking server.

hooray!!!

It was hinted at Paradox no longer owns Gamersgate.
Will the retail boxed version come with a Gamersgate key? (like for EU:Rome)
I like having a CD but i also like the way Gamersgate listen to what consumers want. It quite nice to have a online download available if something happen to the CD. GG is completely browser base and let you mod the games files easily.

A few games truly have had problems with Steam but most of it comes down to a few points however.

1. People with really bad internet connections by inexperience of setting them up or being forced to sit behind firewalls/proxies by their ISP. Most of this problem is up to the user and nowadays it's a must to be able to configure your own router and firewall if you want to partake in the services of the Internet. This is one thing you can't blame Steam for but all the noobs still want to whine.

Disclaimer: I'm a happy Steam user. To continue: To be fair not everyone has the ability or werewhithal to go to school for network systems or wish to spend the time learning about this boring subject in their spare time. If the world would just adopt IPv6 already things would be so much simpler. :D

2. The first few versions of Steam were.... well horrible, but ye most software has issues at the start but it's been resolved for most of the part, I can pretty much now admit that Steam is actually one of the most stable processes I have running most of the time.

I encountered Steam after purchasing HL2 when it was released (I think Steam actually came out after? I disremember) and have to agree that at start it wasn't any good really. After a few false starts I think they've finally got their stuff together and they have a very good DRM platform that balances nicely the developer/game company's desire to see that their hard work isn't copied and distributed freely with that of the gamer's/users desire to be able to play/use the programs they purchase when they want to. I have seen zero issues releated to Steam with any of the couple dozen games I have purchased via Steam (owned by Valve btw...Steam is the platform, not a company). Any issues have been because the game was rushed by the developer/was buggy/had issues outside of Steam already.

3. The DRM.... oh the DRM of Steam how lovely to not be able to instantly patch your games bah... this is probably the biggest fault of Steam but it's not like the other Digital distributors have some issues with this. But steam has it on every game so I guess this is one of the major drawbacks.

In Valve's defense its because of the distributor of the program...they're not providing the updates in a timely enough fashion and/or they're not optimised for the platform. The DRM really isn't at fault - and on that matter those who voraciously argue that DRM isn't needed or desired need to get their heads out of the sand. I'd think the recent court decisions against Pirate Bay would open people's eyes to the problem with pirated software. If not I suggest taking a walk down streets in most metropolitan cities throughout the world. I imagine chances are good you'll see copies of the lates movies, song albums, and even programs...some even yet to have been released.

And like the above, the Steam in-application community beats any other hands-down. It's very common to see someone in a game on steam and they just won't respond on MSN but just pop a message to them over Steam friends and they can read it in game in almost every game.

This I wholeheartedly agree with...Steam beats anything else out other than maybe XFire or some similar friend/messenger service. To wrap up my post in light of the subject, I think Steam has GG beat just on this note here, everything else is subjective to the wishes/desires of the individual user.

I have used both GG and steam over the past few years and neither of them is perfect.
I dislike steam because it forces you to log into your steam account to use some games (ie empite:total war) which can lead to problems occaisionaly where it wont let you play a game, it hasnt happend bery often but if it happens once its enough to make me mad .... I payed for a game, anything that can potential prevent me from playing it is a waste of space.

That little steam ap that it required to be loaded in order to play used resources, and anything that uses system resources has the potential to cause problems/conflicts with the windows resource system. This is the reason almost every tech support post/response tells you "Make sure you have nothing running in the background" ... steam forces you to run it in the background.

If you use the chat or whatever then steam can have benefits for sure, for me they are worthless features. Again just a waste of system resources.

GG has the benefit of being part of the same corp family as Paradox ... ok they may no longer own it outright but they are still very closely tied to them.

Then of course there is the "free" graphics pack when ordering through GG, Fredrick implied that these will be used from other sources (other than GG) but I have reviewed every digital and online retailer in the US and UK and not one of them mentioned any pre-order bonuses. So it looks like if you want them GG is it.

Dear Steam,

I'm active on the Paradox Interactive (PI) forum and got a newsletter saying Hearts of Iron 3 (HoI3) should already be ready for pre-order everywhere including Steam. I had a look at Steam and no pre-order is ready for HoI3, so i contacted PI and they said they sent, the stuff to you, and since it's up on other online download sites, then it can't be PI's fault.

I shouldn't need to tell you that you right now are loosing business to Gamersgate, but i like the way Steam works, so i would expect better (since it normally is better), so when is HoI3 going to be ready for pre-order?
And will it be made ready for pre-load as well (i want to start playing on the 7th at 00:00:00)?

Please just get it done imidiatly, this is for a lot of us expected to be the best game ever made, and then you can't just wait for it to get released, i need to be pre-ordered as soon as you possibly can.

And another thing... HoI3 will be a very modded game, like the HL games, so will Steam fit these mods into the system like with mods for the Steam engine games? With the experience of HoI2 on Steam a lot of PI gamers think Steam is crap and take their business elsewhere, it would be very nice to tell them Steam works perfect, all updates are exactly on time ect.

Just please get it working.

Best regards
*me*

Hello *me*,

We appreciate your concern.

However, it is the publisher's decision when to release a game, or make it available for purchase, even for the Steam version.

Also, it is unlikely that we will keep listings for mods for third party games.

And then they take HoI3 of the "coming soon".. So it clearly seems they are not going to be helpful, so i'm getting my copy from Gamers Gate instead.

EDIT:
And now i just remembered why i hate Gamers Gate.. Payment is though all kind of annoying register and stuff credit card things. I don't want to use paynova or anything else like it, thoes companies are just made to annoy paople and give then a false sence of security.

Why does it have to be so hard to just buy a game with your credit card???:mad::confused:

I would relax with Steam they will have it out by the 7th, why risk losing business by not doing so ? It is also probably removed simply because they are working out the issues because I do believe a lot of people have been asking about HOI III.

Well read what they wrote back... They can't even give you a serious answer, when their business is threatened, so just for the principal of this i'm not buying it through Steam, though i might just have to buy the box, since GG is pissing me off just as much.

They told me nothing = it could be weeks or months before the game is up. It's in 9 days the game is released, it should have been available for pre-order since a week ago almost, just ask PI...

Their business is no business, if they wanted business they would have told me something... Or they just don't know how to run their business and that doesn't build confidence...

Sorry, but things don't always work they way that you want them to. No matter how much you may want them to tell you something, that doesn't mean they will.

But yeah, lets ask PI.

Yes. Im fairly sure it is. Fredrik who is CEO of Paradox is also CEO of GamersGate, or at least GamersGates forum (HERE ON PARADOX FORUMS) he signs his posts "Fredrik, CEO GamersGate", not "Fredrik, CEO Paradox Interactive". So unless he's lying of course, or stupid and made a mistake, im fairly sure thats an indicator that GG is Paradox owned and operated; just because the have non PI games for download doesnt mean that it isnt.

well he is actually the CEO of 'Paradox Entertainment', which is the mother company of PI and GG (i think), not sure about the substructures...

GamersGate is Paradox's own Digital Download Service.

Its outright heresy to not download from it and use Steam instead; Steam is awful.

I cant even go into how horrible and invasive a program it is; DRM and all that crap. Yuk!

I agree Steam suks and is very intrusive you HAVE to have its client installed to use it. Plus you can't burn Paradox games to DVD from Steam like you can Gamersgate and just install from them from then on. I have Crusader Kings plus Dues Vult and EU:Rome plus Vae Victus on DVD's now and I can just swap them from one computer to another without having to download them again or have some kind of security check. ;) I recently found this out when transfering games from my XP machine over to my Vista 64bit machine. The both work wonderfully and I didn't have to download a thing. ;)

I imagine chances are good you'll see copies of the lates movies, song albums, and even programs...some even yet to have been released.

dont start on the piratebay verdict...just dont ... that was a farce for the least to say. a judge who was obviously preoccupied(member of an organization for a more strict copyright...) and they didnt do anything wrong. in pretty much the same way you could sue google for the same thing, they also make it possible to find torrents ... a joke

anyway, back to steam. i dont like it, yes i use it, but still i dont like it.
fact is i dont see any reason why that thing has to be running whenever i play a game i bought there. not that i have a problem with the resources it uses, i just like to keep my system clean and steam stands in the way of that.
i prefer the gamersgate approach(and if you look at the posts in that "did you preorder" thread you will notice that 99% of people there also said they preordered through GG. with GG, you activate it, and thats it. no background service running whatsoever. in fact, most digital distribution stores i know use a method like that (for D2D &Gamesload).

and in all honesty, i dont need all that community, forums, messaging and whatnot crap steam offers. when i buy a game online i want exactly that, the game and being able to play not getting forced into installing some 3rd party app that i didnt want in the first place(thank you very much Empire Total War).

Although the Steam platform was crap in the beginning it really improved over the years. I really love that I can just click one of my games I bought there and it downloads onto my computer and I'll be ready to play in a few minutes. Also, they're integrating the Steam cloud system, this way you can store your settings (graphics, key bindings) to your steam account and you can use those settings on any pc you have Steam installed. I really like these little things. Also, the community is really useful. I just like their matchmaking services. If I want to play a game with a friend I just hit him up at Steam and we go play. Also, if a friend is in a game he can invite me to the game. Everything runs pretty smooth. You need to be online the first time you run the game, after that you can go into offline mode and play the games without internet.

Now on the GG, in the beginning the client was awful, you had to download and install a program that downloaded a tiny download client that downloaded the installer. Way to complicated. I really like how they got rid of the GG client and you can download your installer-downloader through your browser. I also love how you can burn the installer onto DVD or whatever and carry it with you, this is the only thing that GG has over Steam and I love it.

In the end I think they're both equal but I prefer Steam over GG because steam has more payment method and they have a community thing that works really great. But I'm not using them that much anymore, especially since Steam said that a dollar is worth as much as a euro. I used to buy a lot from Steam as I could pay in dollars but now they removed that option and made the price the same no matter what currency you pay in. So a $10 game became €10, which is obviously ridiculous. So they changed from a really cheap platform to a really expensive one. GG has never been cheaper than physical copies.

A small note on the resource consumption of Steam. 4 or 5 years ago it used to really bad but now with the computer we have these days and optimilization of the platform made it really a non-complaint. If your system slows down because of steam you're not going to be able to play HoI3 anyway.

im gonna keep my views simple, I don't like steam because i always have to wait to play my games cause steams updating or cnt talk to the server and let me play. I own 3 steam games and just the other day i tried to show off Empire TW to a mate and it took like 40 mins before he even got to play it. also I dnt see why i should have to turn my downloads off so that steam can get a connection and let me play. and dnt get me started on DRM.
where as GG are as close to PI as you can download from and we get sprites and pretty much do what you want with the install file unlike steam. Its a no brainer though if you respect PI pay the extra and download from GG, if you cnt afford it buy a hard copy. With all the information I have read here I cant see a single benifit for downloading from steam, please tell me if you have one???
