I recently upgraded my computer and had to switch to a Chinese language edition of Windows XP. After upgrading .NET to the most recent versions, I was able to launch CK2, but most DLC is not downloading and installing correctly.

Patch 1.103 && Checksum VQLL

A couple of DLC correctly downloaded and installed, but most download extremely slowly (like several Kb/sec at most) and say that they have downloaded correclty, but when I go to try and unzip the DLC it says the zip file is corrupted (obviously they were not fully downloaded).

Any idea what is causing the slow download speeds and cutoff before fully downloading the DLC? Is there any other place I can download the DLC? (I've logged into the online store, so it should be able to verify which ones I own or don't own upon launch)

The ingame store used to download at reasonable speeds, but this has been an ongoing issue here in Shenzhen, China (the slow download speeds through the GamersGate in game store, I mean)

Hi jschutte,

Are you sure your checksum is VQLL? As the correct checksum has to be WQLL. Also, you are not supposed to un-zip the DLC's, the game reads them out of those folders.

As for the question about where to download the dlc's, when you bought the game via gamersgate (or any retailer that gives a 'GamersGate version' of the game), the only place where you can download the dlc's is from the in-game store.

If you download other games from Gamersgate, do you notice the same slow speeds? And how is it with other downloads?

Further I'd suggest doing a full clean reinstall to see if that would solve the problem.

  • Important:: Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\save games\' and copy all the save games you want to keep outside the folder.
  • Uninstall Crusader Kings II.
For Steam users: uninstall the game from within steam by right clicking on the game and select "Delete content".
  • Go to the folder where you installed Crusader Kings II in, and check if the Crusader Kings II folder is removed. If not, delete the entire folder.
For Steam users: Installation folder can be found at: '..\Steam\SteamApps\common\'.
  • Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\' and remove the entire Crusader Kings II folder.
  • Reinstall the game, make sure you install the game outside the 'C:\Program Files\' or 'C:\Program Files (x86)\' folders, as it can cause issues with permissions.

Checksum is WQLL, sorry.

I know you don't have to unzip the zip files, but it is the quickest way to check the integrity of the file to see if it downloaded correctly.

Game installers from Gamers Gate download at several hundred kb/sec, so my guess is the servers they use for CKII are different (or just a small portion of their servers). This might be worth asking about, even though it doesn't affect most users.

Also, one last question: Can you copy DLC into a new install and then make it work by signing into the ingame store and then restarting? Or do you have to download with a new install?

I'm having the same problem since The Republic expansion, I don't recall having slow download speed and corrupt .zip files in 2012.

Game installers from GamersGate download at close to maximum bandwidth, but in-game store downloads at a few kb/sec and a lot of the time the downloaded .zip file ends up corrupt and the game cannot start unless the corrupt files are removed.

I have done a clean re-installation and the problem persists. I have noticed that the problem sometime lessens around 0:00 GST, so I'm guessing it may be caused by server resource allocation.

Also, one last question: Can you copy DLC into a new install and then make it work by signing into the ingame store and then restarting? Or do you have to download with a new install?

From my experience, you can copy DLC files to a new install after signing into in-game store and it works just fine. Given that the only way to download DLCs is from the in-game store, and that path is not working or us, the one thing we can try is to copy the DLCs we have bought from someone else's folder.

I have managed to correctly download the three new DLCs by getting up early and downloading them before 7 am in the morning, the speed is still low at 10-20 kb/sec, but the .zip files are complete. So far the only solution I know is to perform the download during early morning local time, probably benefiting from fewer competing traffic.

I have been living in Shanghai, China for the past two years. I'm currently travelling in another city, where I had to get up even earlier than I did in Shanghai in order to to install the DLCs correctly. I guess the problem is basically caused by low bandwidth from certain server to China, therefore it's specific to China.

I'm actually fine with getting up early every now and then. Although if GamersGate can prevent incomplete download in case of low bandwidth, or just hash check the downloaded files, it would be much appreciated.

You'll need to contact GamersGate about that support@gamersgate.com , Paradox have no connection with them and can't do anything about their download servers.
