This is a video I made of my preview base on game play footage I have seen as well as DDs & comments made by the YouTubers who were at the HOI IV press event. I have no inside info that is not commonly available on this forum. Sorry the audio is not better (my normal game video software would not work with Photoshop and I wanted to be able to zoom in on the photos). I know everyone won't agree with all I have to say, but I would like to hear your feedback. Again as others have said this is still Alpha and my views will change as the game develops & when I finally get a chance to play the game.

I would prefer "preview" over "review", as you did not actually play the game yet as far as I understand.

Sabaton makes me forgive anything though.

I do hope you do, I called it a review because I am commenting/reviewing the screen caps I have made. I was a bit torn on preview or review for the title.

In game press it's common to not call something a review until after the game has been released though or you have at least played hands on with an early release press copy of the final game...

So I think it's a good idea to change the name to not confuse people.

Todt is greyed out in the political advisor selection because he will only be available once the national focus of constructing the West wall is completed. I bet he will not seem to be wearing a black uniform once the picture is no longer reduced to tones of grey. Ehrm... or maybe You have seen a picture where he is not greyed out and the uniform is still black. Then that needs to be changed!

Erich Hartmann was certainly in a fighter unit in Arumba's video. In Your screenshot (which I failed to notice in the videos) You seem to be able to assign him to a JU88 unit. That would certainly imply one can move aces between units, or at least an ace from one unit to another unit without an ace. That would make it possible to move them from an outdated unit to a modern unit, if for some reason air units cannot upgrade their eqiupment. I agree he should not be the first German ace available.

Yes, I have seen Todt in a much earlier non-greyed out image and he is depicted as wearing black. I know the photo it was taken from & the uniform seems very dark in it and another photo from the same session in the dark uniform clearly shows his red arm band as darker (red is not darker than black, but is darker than SA brown in black & white photos). He mostly was photographed in civilian suits, but he was a member of the SA & Luftwaffe and I have seen him in both of those uniforms.

If you can move Aces to different aircraft then I am satisfied and put down his early use as Alpha & needed for the press event.

@Ted52
Thanks! ;)

Good effort; and you pointed out a few details I'd missed.

Just watch how far you zoom; couple of shots were really blurred (yeah I know you had limited screen grabs to work with)

+1 to "Preview" being more apt- it is alpha and we've heard so much about how there are still significant changes coming.

Cheers for the vid @Gamer_1745, it was an enjoyable watch and picked out a few details I hadn't picked up on either. A nice summary of what we know so far. Didn't mind the background music either, never actually heard any Sabaton before (at least heard knowing it was them).

On your very last point, you mentioned you'd like a view of the battalion layout (a good point, I'd like one too) - at the bottom of that window there were two tabs, one that said stats (that looked like it was selected) and one that said template, so if template does that, we might be looked after.

9:33 made me chuckle. :p

Haha, me too - very witty ;).

I do have a comment about the part where you said that the air research tree needs more variants. If I'm not mistaken, you can already make your own variants of the current model through the use of experience points; as in upgrade the armor, speed, agility (?) and range (?). Thus allowing you to, if you you really want to, make historical variants of said models.

Speed and agility are improved with giving the engine of the aircraft more points and armor is known as reability, weapon is the thing you have missed.

Looking at the video:
  • The resources shown at the top in the production screen is the resources you have (or need if the number is red) after production so if you have 100 iron and use 10 for production you will see 90 iron.
  • Medals are traits.
  • How many research slots you have may be d
  • Support weapons (mortar and machinegun) improves defensiveness and breakthrough (toughness) for all infantry types and for all weapons, but it is a % modifier.
  • The production tech tree is divided into 4 major lines. On the left you have the machine tool line which increase your efficiency cap for military factories (starts at 50%). In the middle you have the choice between a centralized industry which gives a major output bonus for your industry or a decentralized industry which gives a minor output bonus but greatly reduce the effectivness of enemy strategic bombing. At mid right you have the construction line which improves civilian factories ability to construct buildings and repair damaged buildings. At far right you have synthetic oil which you will then have to build a building for like reactors for nukes.
  • You can get all air doctine tech other then you have to make the choice between daytime or nighttime focus for your strategic bombing. While doctrines never get a time ahead penalty, they are quite expansive per tech and their is alot of them.
  • Air transports are probably not in the tech tree for the same reason you don't see convoys in the tech tree;)
  • The logistic view show how many equipment you need for your divisions and you can also see your stockpile here and your gain or loss of equipment each month.

Speed and agility are improved with giving the engine of the aircraft more points and armor is known as reability, weapon is the thing you have missed.

Reliability is just what it is, reliability. It has nothing to do with armor, but how likely the thing is to just 'randomly' break down (engine failures, how prone it is to bad weather and critical hits etc).

On ships you can increase armor and reliability seperately for example. They said that reliability in the case of ships also means "ship shapeness" or something, basically how well built the ship is. If the ship isn't built well, but heavily armored, it might take less damage in general but is more prone to critical hits.

The explanation would basically be that while the ship has great armor, due to trying to fit as much armor as possible (and maybe other things, like a big engine, big guns etc) without really paying a lot of ressources to make sure that everything is covered, there's many weakspots in the armor that if hit cause great damage to the ship.

But wouldn't that make it the number one thing you'll always try to beef up? I mean, I can see myself spending all my points on reliability and ignore the others if there is no cap or downside to it.

Then that variant is going to cost you a lot of time to build. Any stat increase that is not reliability, will lower reliablity. A reliable tank with nor armor will be penerated by anything. An unreliable tank with a lot of armor will survive hellfire, but might get taken out by a lucky shot.. or its engine might fail way before it reaches the enemy.

Any stat increase makes the variant cost more time to build, too, or at least reliability does.

EDIT: Here's the quote.

In the example here we can see a Carrier, and that it's four possible upgrades are:
Armor - Increases protection, primarily from air attacks, but reduces Speed and Deckspace.
Deckspace - Increases number of Aircraft carried.
Engine - Increases speed.
Reliability - This stat is a little more complicated than the others. The other 3 upgrades all reduce Reliability a little while this upgrade counters the effect. Could also be thought of as "systematology" or "ship-shapedness", it's basically how well put together the ship is. A low Reliability makes the ship more vulnerable to critical hits in combat.

You can choose to upgrade all four areas of the ship, of course, and get an all-round better ship at a high cost, or you can only upgrade a few stats and have a more specialized ship.
