Without mods game runs at 1.2GB RAM when it's loaded and 4GB when I load a saved game.
With mods it jumps to 3.5GB RAM when loaded and 12GB when I load a saved game! This is excessive! I never had a game or any application to use so much RAM!

There are 560 mods from Steam plus 130 of mine so all 690, lots of them true but the majority are assets mostly buildings and parks that don't exceed 3MB in size, only a few skyscrapers, traffic++ and other mods go over 15MB but those are very few.
Still I cannot understand how it can jump from 4GB to 12GB!

I made some test activating only certain categories of mods at a time to see if there is some assets or mods that cause the game to use the excessive RAM. To my dissapointment I only found that each asset and mod adds a little I found no suspicious mods.

I could probably delete some skyskrapers but I will miss the variety. And what when After Dark comes out, what when more nice mods come out? Should I buy 32GB RAM or 64? No way... with 16GB ram I have now I'm satisfied but game has a problem with mods and ram.
Something has to be done! :(

The only problem I see is your many mods and assets, mostly assets. Try and sort them out those you don't need so often could be removed or firstly just be disabled.
I'm running my game with 23 mods, 59 props and 156 assets. Until today I haven't had any problems at all and I had way more subscriptions in March when I got the game.

Unfortunately it is to simple just pressing subscribe and rather more difficult to press unsubscribe.

Exactly! :(
I have already sorted out lots of assets I guess I'll have to remove some skyscrapers which they are around 15MB.

I understand when it's a custom model it can be big enough but when it's a game's asset a custom park for example why it has to be 2-3MB? It should be smaller just a few lines of codes for props, dimensions and positions.
I'm sure there can be some optimization with mods. I really hope to play CS for years and download new mods every now and then. Otherwise I can't imagine how much RAM I will need in 3-4 years from now and 3000-4000 mods/assets.

I often Have to cull my assets as there are always new ones that tempt me to download...at the moment I have 1096 assets downloaded, but I have 32gb memory which can handle it...loading times are a bit long though

I plan to buy a new computer in the next months 32GB seems to be necessary.. oh well.. :( I thought 16GB were more than enough and it will take many years untill apps or games will need more. Only 3D apps and movie editing were using more.. I was mistaken.
I just hope they will be good for other strategy games bigger maps etc.
Considering G.Skill DDR4 3000Mhz CL15.

I've just loaded up the game after a months+ break and i'm also getting huge RAM usage, even on empty maps with all mods disabled. I never had this problem before and seem to crash at the menu a lot more now. I assumed it was a mod problem so I disabled all of them, verified cache, reinstalled and still have the same problem - I started a new game to test usage and it's using 6.3gb on a default map.

Do mods affect the game's performance even when disabled?

In my system it uses around 2GB on empty empty default map. Go to set launch options in Steam and add: --disableMods
Then start your game again. It should not use that much RAM.

Hey alpha, thanks for the speedy reply and help. Unfortunately --disableMods didn't make any real difference, but you did remind me of --noWorkshop and tests with that averaged 1.2GB less on tests with new game Two Rivers. Strangely enough I only use 2.6GB on my old unmodded 110k pop map. Looks like I have some assets and mods to trim.
