Simple problem: every time there is a change in papal controller, my ruler, no matter where he is in Europe and no matter how high his piety, is instantly excommunicated. I've restarted six times now with different rulers, and every time the pope dies, BOOM excommunication. The AI is specifically targeting me, and it has made the game broken and 100% unplayable.

Is there a way to completely remove excommunication? I really have no choice since it's broken the game.

First, the game isn't 'broken' just because you're having some bad luck.
Second, you should register your game if you think your problem is a technical one.

It's not bad luck.

I have tested it 10 times now.

Out of every ruler in the world, I am ALWAYS excommunicated at the first death of a pope.

CK Complete doesn't give a key. You'll notice several people don't have the CK icon, yet post here. No icon (for CK) does not mean piracy.

Also, to the original poster: Are you playing with Deus Vult, and the latest beta patch? If not, get to it. I also recommend using the DV:IP mod, it improves the game heavily.

Can you name a few examples of the rulers you are playing ? And who was the Papal Controller (PC).

I never seen this myself and neither have a lot of other people, else the forum would be full of this game-breaking situation.

That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen to you, I just find it strange that it happens in all your games with all the rulers you play. Since the only one who can excommunicate you is the Papal Controller and the PC only excommunicates people in his own region.

So if the PC f.e. is the duchess of Tuscany, then playing f.e. a count in Ireland shouldn't result in an excommunication,

(FYI I have "complete" IE Deus Vult with DVIP)

I'm beginning to figure this out: when I was excommunicated in Ireland it was the King of England doing it (although it was weird that he kept consistently choosing me despite me having higher piety than all of my neighbours), however it was also the King of England when I was excommunicated while playing as a German count. Still haven't quite figured out why he did that, other than because the AI specifically goes after the player.

The AI does not go specifically after the player. I have played a lot of games where I could get cheap claims on someone else because the Pope/Papal Controller had excommunicated an AI ruler.

Whether you have a higher piety than your neighbours doesn't really matter, as long as you have a lower piety than the pope has prestige. After all,if you were the PC, would you care how much prestige the pope lost, as long as your target was excommunicated? :)

It was a poor decision made due to the fact that it was too difficult to program the AI to understand excommunication, if I recall, but it probably won't be present in CK2. I will say I notice my neighbors tend to become papal controller very often, as opposed to random people throughout Europe. It's strange, because when I play as William the Conqueror for example, I've never once been papal controller, yet seemingly every-time I start in Ireland, William of course is the first papal controller. It's very annoying.

...

Isn´t that very simple? Create more and larger bishoprics than any other ruler and your bishop or Archbishop will likely be elected pope and you become the PC.

To be honest I don't really understand how PC is chosen. Often the PC isn't from the same demesne as the Pope - eg, the Pope might have initially been the Bishop of Skane, but his former liege, the King of Denmark, isn't the PC - instead, some random count in the Low Countries is.

It is whoever has the highest piety.
Although this can get screwed up when loading a save. So, if you have become PC, don't save and re-load or you will possibly lose it.

I don't think it's just the highest piety. At one point, I had 1400 piety with my hugely pious emperor, but the papal controller was... the duke of Orkney, that had -130 piety, but was the brother (and friend) of the Pope. Even after saving/loading, it was still him.

It isn't quite that simple when you're playing as a count ;). If you're playing as King, as others have pointed out, this is by no means guaranteed even then. Not to mention William doesn't create that many bishops typically; he prefers to give titles to his sons, as the AI in general likes to do. I can think of maybe one or two characters he'll make a bishop on average.

The Great

Does the PC have a claim on your title? When excommunicated it is very easy to claim your titles. The AI knows this and will use excommunication politically to make it easier to get claims on titles it wants. IF you're Irish and the King of England is the PC then it seems likely he excommunicated you so he could start grabbing titles in Ireland and expanding over there.
