Game stutter

so ever since i started in 1.6.2 and still in 1.7 i have noticed that ever time that the day cycles to the next day that the game stutters. like a mini lag. scrolling is stopped and then keeps scrolling and stops like a stutter and ships, animations, etc etc. do the exact same thing. im not really sure what the issue is. lag in games isnt an issue for me. i have tried different resolutions before and it did not help. tried turning off all my mods, no such luck either. the game is playable just highly highly annoying.

I have do:
Re-run Redistributables

YES YOU HAVE TO DO THIS. I don't care if you 'already have DirectX installed'

Run ALL of these

•Steam\steamapps\common\stellaris\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\DXSetup.exe

•Steam\steamapps\common\stellaris\_CommonRedist\DotNet\4.0 Client Profile\dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe

•Steam\steamapps\common\stellaris\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\vcredist_x64.exe

•Steam\steamapps\common\stellaris\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\vcredist_x86.exe

REBOOT your system after installing them.

And it functions for a short time 5 Minutes and after them the same problem again...
This problem began in July 2017 ... I play stellaris more then 430 hours without problems...
I have no idea what we can do...

I am also not connected with the Stellaris account and the game runs as always in the break mode correct...only if I start time...

my system is new ...all other games running correct without problems

This indicates to me that it's something outside the game causing it.

Does it happen in the launcher? In the main game menu? When you start a new galaxy? Or only in mid- to late-game play?


Add steam.exe and stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app.


Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 30 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php


If you exit Steam entirely and run stellaris.exe by itself, does it still happen?

Thank you for your answer. It always happens in the game at the beginning of a galaxy (new game) or after loading an old game. I have disabled all mods and just reinstall the game. The story with the Windows update I have examined and is installed with me correctly. The graphic drivers of the RX480 are current, but the stutter is still there. The game is unplayable. I will check the whole again after the News installation.

Only when playing. In pause mode everything is okay. Only when I start the time it starts. In the main menu I have not noticed yet. The two exe are already released in my AV.

Okay the game is reinstalled and without mods but it starts after the reboot (a new game) immediately back with the stutter as soon as the time is activated.
I do not know what I can do anymore ... the game seems lost...

GPU Temp: Start 37°C --- 30 min play 55°C
CPU Temp: Start 35°C --- 30 min play 47°C

If you exit Steam entirely and run stellaris.exe by itself, does it still happen?


DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log .


Do you happen to have FreeSync enabled in your AMD setup? If so please try disabling it.

The story with the Windows update I have examined and is installed with me correctly.

By this you refer to the patch issues seen with the Anniversary update? FYI there was also one such issue in the Creators Update; I'll post details of both here FYI:

it was due to a Windows update (KB4015217) after rolling this back the game now runs smoothly on the latest version, this Windows patch is not the Creators Update and is just a Cumulative Update. I am going to test reinstalling the patch and running the Creators Update to see if i can get the game working and have a patched system.


What i did was uninstall KB4015217 then download https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4015217 and run it mannualy i then tried to run windows updates the normal way an noticed it was stuck at downloading an update and was on 0% so i opened cmd as admin and ran "net stop wuauserv" then removed all files in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution then ran "net start wuauserv". After that i ran windows updates normally again and it downloaded a couple of smaller updates and installed them.
If you can not delete some files in the SoftwareDistribution folder then restart your computer and run the command to stop the service again.
You might not need to do the update fix, i only did this as like i said i noticed that it was stuck on downloading an update.


I noticed a update that looked stuck at 0% downloaded. I stopped the windows update services then I removed the software distribution folder and let windows update repopulate the folder. Restarted the services and let windows download Windows update (KB4015217) again since I removed that for testing and then it downloaded another update (Windows 10 Creators Update Privacy Settings for x64-based Systems (KB4013214)). This must of been the one stuck. I restarted and did a random game on Stellaris and seems smooth as before

So, just as many of you, after the Creators Update for Win 10 I had the stuttering that made the game unplayable for me. I tried different solutions - and none helped.
But just an hour ago I googled for "windows 10 creators update stuttering". I scrolled down a little bit and checked this video

1) While the guy talks about the "Anniversary Update" and stuttering it caused for him in the games he played, I still decided to check the solution he used to get rid of the stuttering and used the program he reviewed to disable everything related to Privacy in Win 10.

2) Second thing I did was something I found while searching for fix today too:
Go to steam\steamapps\common\stellaris. Right-click the stellaris.exe > advanced > compatibility and there's a new option called "Disable full-screen optimizations” and tick the box.

3) I disabled XBox GameDVR and the new Game Mode thing.


So these were 3 things I tried today and found out that the stuttering and frametimes spikes were gone for both Stellaris and Hearts of Iron 4! I'm not sure which suggested "fix" worked.

Have the game started without mods and without steam and a new Galaxy started and stutter is still there.

You will get the documents this evening when I'm back home (Stellaris settings.txt. and system.log)

FreeSync from AMD is not active --- game stuttering still.

Windos Update KB4015217 is installed.
Windos Update KB4013214 is not yet installed. Will install it and test if something changes

Did you check through the Creators Update issue above?

Install and run the free utility Speccy please. Export its output to a text file and attach that here please.

Okay problem is solved. I have the program reimage loaded (for the repair must be paid). The PC tested and Soma windows system damage detected. After the repair, the damaged windows updates were removed and replaced. Now run the game again without stuttering! Problem was really in a faulty windows update not with Stellaris! I just played and after 15 minutes it was still stable. AndrewT thank you for your help and Support.

I'm very glad to hear that, even if I don't fully understand what you did or found!

The cause was an error in the update process of Windows. The update was corrupted and the subsequent updates could be installed. I could not remove the corrupted update manually. Here I used reimage that the faulty updates found and repaired.

I have to say, that site seems a bit dodgy ... "Stelarris crashes" indeed! I'd suggest you check your computer for malware or adware , just in case .... !
