usually i got chrome open and possibly win explorer

I'll bet you have more than that running in the background. Run msconfig and see what you have scheduled at start up. You probably have a slew of programs that initiate as soon as you boot up and then run without you necessarily being aware that they are eating up system resources.

For starters, I would suspect any security software you may have; a lot of those type of software love to consume your computing resources but will not overtly let you know that they do.
