It may help but you can play the game well without any knowledge of WW2.

Is the community here better?
The best option is to ask both communties.

Carrier aircrafts are not the same as land based fighters in HOI4, USA carrier based fighters will not be named Mustang although they share the same picture. You can rename your aircrafts with the variant system.

It may help if you play with Historical Focusses and know what all the countries will most likely do. Other than that, no, not really. Its a game after all, and knowledge of actual history doesn't exactly help you in EU4 as well. Knowldege of the historical event files is another story.

I thought about posting questions on the Steam community but I'm not entirely confident in its ability to answer questions without bias or being...difficult. Is the community here better?

My experiences with the steam forums are bad. Like really bad. They seem to be mostly filled with raging, whining and impatient people, at least a lot more than you will see here. I personally don't bother looking there for any game ever. The Paradox forums are probably as civilised as a place in the internet where nearly everyone is able to join can be ;)

The carrier variants of these planes are indicated by the symbol in the top right corner of each aircraft type in the research tree and have different names.
However, there already was complaint about how the naming could be better and that the wrong units are applied to the wrong place. But you can make your own variants and name them however you want, so that shouldn't be too bad.

I mean I don't know why but when I'm playing EU I try to make a bunch of Latin Medieval Infantry and I'm somewhat comparing it to Age of Empires, so I don't really know what exactly is happening there. I also have trouble with the interface and researching things, but I'm not sure whether I've set anything up or not. At least with WW2 I know what radar is, what a Spitfire is, etc.

Fair enough; as you can see I don't exactly make a lot of posts here but I was looking forward to HOI4 and didn't feel like posting on Steam for it.

So I guess what you're saying is that my 1939 era carrier fighters are going to act like Wildcats but look like P-40s? And using the naming system I can basically rename these so-called naval P-40s to whatever I want?

...so I guess that means I can rename my Soviet Yak-9s to be the PAK FA and the game won't care?

If that's the case having some kind of option to change the portrait so it makes more sense would be nice, but I imagine it's too late in development for that.

You may have misunderstood a few things. When - lets say - you have researched your 1939 fighters P40 for 150 days ( I don´t know the real units ingame atm so I go with the example ) you can produce them now, but for the carrier version you actually have to push the "carrierbutton" and research additional 50 days to get the 1939 carrier plane Wildcat. On top of that you can create and name unlimited amounts of variants of each "default" plane using combat experience.

Now if they have different artwork I don´t know for sure but I remember typical white zeroes zipping around in the air, where army variants should have had other shape and coloring.

So it would be more accurate then to say that you research the 1939 era land based fighter first (skipping possible?) which ends up being a P-40 (or something else...) and then you research another 50 or so days for the carrier based version of the 1939 era fighter...which effectively reskins them to be F4Fs (but with editable stats for reliability, firepower, etc.).

Am I understanding it now?

yes :)

but to be clear, each researched plane has a set of default values ( it was said that the carrier plane is a slightly bit worse than the land plane of the same year ). And the offspring variants could be given 5 points each in the category ( guns, engine, range, reliability) which costs combatexperience. For details please review the dev diaries.

The decision to put the carrier variants only in the small buttons of the land planes - instead of giving them own pictures in the research tree was - IMO - an unnecessary and confusing one.

I almost feel like they should do with planes what was done with tanks - researching for example the Panther lets you click on the tank destroyer version and unlock the Jagdpanther.

Except in this case just research the "1939 fighter chassis" (insert better name here) which becomes the P-40 and then the carrier variant becomes the Wildcat.

Or something.

Hm, now I don´t understand you, the mechanics are exactly the same ( with tanks the tiny buttons are more justified because of 3 possible chassis types instead of 1 land or carrier plane )

Ok, no you need to be more generic than that. The panther/jagdpanther in your example is straightforward but you have a lot of RL types which didnt fit in so well, e.g. using standard chassis, heavily modified chassis or entirely different chassis and so on...

I hope this can be used as Q/A thread (I don´t like to make new for every stupid question I happen to have). Anyway, do you know answers to these?
1) How can you switch your system from democrcy to communism or from communism to fascism etc. I get that the support for different parties changes all the time, but how do you switch your "ruling system"?
2) Do the percentage of support for parties actually affect you? Do the elections in democracies affect you? What happens when a democratic nation has the major support for fascist for example?
Thanks a lot in advance.

You can shift your communism/democracy/fascism allegiance by selecting appropriate advisors. http://www.hoi4wiki.com/Ideas#Political_advisers

Some national focus might also give assistance for the shift.

External influence is also possible:

Boost party popularity: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...evelopment-diary-5th-of-february-2016.906667/

It has been confirmed by the devs in several WWW and DD (don't recall exactly where) that if you try to switch allegiance as a major (i.e. wanting Germany to become democratic) it will most certainly has to forced via a nasty civil war.

AFAIK (and also according to some current threads) there has been very little disclosed about the political party systems and elections. Maybe the devs will make a future DD about this?

So do I understand it correctly (as far as we know) that you have to support the party you want (I knew that btw) and then there is a civil war or some other way to switch the whole political system in the game?

Is there ever a peaceful way to transition or is it always by civil war?

In the Finland WWW stream the transition to fascism from democracy happened peacefully. I think a larger country is more prone to a civil war than a smaller one.
