Started a new game as Tengri count of Fejer, under the duchy of Balaton (Viking Age start).

You start with no heir, so it was game over when he died a few weeks after the game start.

However, on the game over screen, I could not see a way finding my cause of death?
A split second before death there was a pop-up of some kind, but that was occluded by the (immovable) game over screen.

Once on the game over screen, there seems to be very little of the interface you can interact with.
I was only being able to bring up character sheets of the characters mentioned in the game over screen.
So while I was able to bring up the character sheet of my dead ruler, the hover-over tool-tips did not function in this state.

I will forever be guessing whether it was just a random "died of poor health", or if my catholic liege (and heir) had me assassinated.

Seems like a bit of a UI oversight.

You probably got unlanded because the Magyars settled in this region. Fejer id de jure in the kingdom of Hungary.

Magyars weren't at war with my liege yet.
As I said, it was only a few weeks into the game.

Also, as I'm Tengri, shouldn't I retain my title through the conquest? (unless it's occupied by the invaders).
Or is the Magyar invasion some special event driven war that doesn't follow normal CB rules?

Once the Magyars win there war with Bulgaria they get all titles in the dejure Hungarian area.( forget the name the kingdom I think) as in the leader gets all the baronies and up. If you were in that area when they won I would suspect that would be the game over

I'd I'm not mistaken that's how it works and yes it is a special cb . It used to be they get whatever land they occupied so you can eat all of Bulgaria and settle. But they nerfed it to the dejure area because pdx hates fun

Not sure that's what happens; I just tried again, and this time I lived a little longer.
Magyars won their war with Bulgaria (obviously), and gained all Bulgarian land in de jure Hungary.
Soon after they started a 2nd war (invasion of Hungary) against Great Moravia.
Unfortunately my liege then imprisoned and executed me..... (even though he owed me a favour!)

The only thing I did differently, was to ally with the dude doing the invasion, and joined his war.

I think in my next attempt I'll declare independence and try to hold out until the Magyars kill my liege for me.

Mhmmm weird id be more sure if I was home. Is your duchy in Hungary kingdom? I guess it doesn't really answer your original question though.

That sucks. My shortest game was when I decided to play with an Italian duchess (don't remember which one). She got pregnant right after I married her and then died in childbirth 9 months later. Then the baby died.

Wait, does the Magyar invasion give them even the parts not controlled by Bulgaria? That sounds like horrible, flavorBUR.txt-level railroading and IW-level babysitting.

Even when it's not a game-ending death, I never liked how the deaths are handled in the UI...it feels like a careless footnote when the "Oh and btw u just died like 5 mins ago" pop-up is just lost in stack of other messages related to the death and you have to sift through it all to try and piece together what happened.
I'd love to see something prominent and attention-grabbing when your character passes on. Stop the world for a second, fade everything back and maybe a bell tolls, and the message takes front and center with an explanation of what happened, who you're playing now, and all appropriate next steps.

That's actually been changed a bit now. Was this game from before the latest release?

I haven't played the 1066 start in a while, but IIRC that's how it works, or at least how it used to work. But I thought that it didn't happen if you were actually playing as the Avars. Maybe that exception doesn't apply if you're a vassal in the Avar kingdom? Or maybe I'm just wrong about there being an exception.

I think in my next attempt I'll declare independence and try to hold out until the Magyars kill my liege for me.

Well, tried this strategy out. Pulled it off too!
I declared independence from my Catholic liege Duke once the initial Magyar invasion of Bulgaria's Hungarian lands was complete.
The newly formed Hungarian King promptly ate my liege (Holy War CB), ending my independence war, and winning me my independence.

I intended to immediately swear fealty to the Hungarian King, but before that had time to be accepted, I got a call to arms from one of my allied Magyar tribe leaders. (he decided to revolt against the Magyar Khan). Accepting this CtA caused my vassalization request to be declined.

Soon after that the newly formed Hungarian Kingdom switched to Catholicism, and within days declared Holy War on my lone county.
Suffice to say my levy of ~300 didn't really do much to his still healthy event stack of 7k.
I was somewhat surprised how quickly the Hungarian King abandoned Tengrism; less than 3 months after the formation of Hungary (he hadn't even acquired all of its de jure lands!).

Whether my Duke Liege, or turn-coat Hungarian King neighbour, It seems the Catholics are intent on making life hard (or death easy) for my poor Count of Fejer :(

You mean 867, right? By 1066 the Hungarians were christians for around a century already.

Haha no just the Bulgaria part I didn't explain it well. I shouldnt forum on a phone
Wait, were you a vassal of Bulgaria?
