Now I came to an awkward situation. I started as a duke of dynasty XXX and had a son. Then I married him to a daughter of another duke from dynasty ZZZ. My son left my court and moved to his. After some time passed my son became father giving me a grandson, but the grandosn's dynasty became same as his mother's: ZZZ.

Eventually my duke has died and my son inherited all the titles. However his son (heir) is of different (mother's) dynasty, which in case of death of my current ruler will result as Game Over...

Now, isn't it odd that a male descendant inherits family crest after his mother and joins her dynasty instead of his father's?

WTH am I supposed to do now? I tried to kill him (omg!! murdering my own child!!!), but it failed a few times resulting in all my vassals wishing me to burn in hell.

The scenario you are describing would be possible only if you agreed to a matrilinear marriage. Otherwise, the children will be of your dynasty, even though they might take the culture of the liege.

Something like this must have happened (I know as it happened to me once):
1) You betroth your son to a women from ZZZ.
2) When they are both of age a notification pops up saying that they can get married.
3) At the same time a diplomatic note comes from country ZZZ asking than they get married, but in a matrilinear way.
4) If you don't read carefully (as I didn't) you can say yes, thinking it's the same thing.

In this game there are three types of marriages. First, betrothal which is the promise of a child to another person. Second, is the simple royal marriage where all children will be apart of the males dynasty. The last and final one is maternal marriage, this one has all descendants follow the females lineage.

In the case of the royal marriage the woman will join the males court whereas in the maternal the man will join the woman's court.

You must have selected without really wishing it a matrilineal marriage !
No way to undo than kill sons/wife, declared marriage void and kill sons and find a new wife.

Constructive murder probably is your best option here...

My guess as to what happened: Either you accidentally selected the Arrange Matrilineal Marriage option, rather than the normal one when marrying your son. Or (more likely) you first betrothed him as either he or his future wife were minors; if you do this and don't soon arrange a marriage yourself when you are notified that both parties are of age, the other party will send you a message asking for the betrothal to be made good on. Sometimes they ask to marry matrilineally rather than normally, and if you don't spot the wording, you may will end up in the situation you are in now.

Alright, sounds like you definantly have been arranging matrielinal marriages, which means that the woman's dynasty is the one that any children born of the union will take. also, be careful when arranging betrothales, as the brides liege will attempt to offer you a matrilinal marriage the moment the betrothed come of age, so make sure you don't accept that. by the way, register your game and you'll have access to the various subforums, plus people will be more open to helping you, as it will be confirmation that you legally own the game.

History does not look kindly on dynasty leaders who marry their first and only sons into matrillineal marriages. Just be glad you learned that lesson quickly instead of 300+ years in. :)

However I hope there will be a patch making matrilinear marriage only possible if

* the woman is of higher rank (e.g. woman is Duke and man is Count)
or
* the womans family has much more family-prestige than the mans family

and disable it for courtiers to avoid the exploit to soak all talented guys on your court.

Agree with that, to stop advisor fishing... As an absolute minimum, if you want to get a courtier to your court by matrilineal marriage you should have to use a member of your dynasty. And even that might be a little generous. I think I'd prefer close relatives (although including nieces and such who are to distantly related to be used to get a marriage alliance).

At the moment you have people who refuse to come if you just invite them, but ask them if they want to give up their hope of dynastic glory as well, and they leap at the chance...

If you can change succession laws, you have another option. Go elective, get new wife by blade or bible. Have a son with new wife, nominate that son. Let's you avoid killing your current son's. If you have a potential nominee already, a sibling or vassal of your dynasty, you may be able to skip the killing all together.
Elective is actually a very nice succession method, if you can keep the electors in line.

Yes, elective works great and electors usually follow the liege's nomination.

Regarding "no heir".

What happens if you have cadet branches "your kinsman" all over Europe, but no direct heirs of any kind. Is it game over or one of them inherits?

Constructive murder probably is your best option here...

That's what i did with my mother and her second son, the duchess of swabia and future duke of swabia!

Of course this eventually led to me becoming HRE and the empire collapsing cause I was a kinslayer, excommunicated and a heretic. Safe to say I need to restart.. cause the constant civil wars are just a pain when Im trying to conquer Syria
