I am playing version eu2_107b_7apr.zip.

This is my first game of EU2 (AoE; Austria). Options are both set for DIFFICULTY and AI AGGRESSIVENESS to NORMAL.

The year is 1648 and I seem to be doing pretty well for my first game and all. See screen shots.

My question is would have setting the option settings to higher levels beyond NORMAL have made a very significant impact in the game challenge and my results thus far?

Thanks.

well, Setting the AI aggresivness to furious used to lead the AI Empires to breaking up thorugh WE revolts as they would refuse to sign peace treaties. (Dunno if this have been balanced better in the newer patches..) This could perhaps have lead to smaller empires and more states around Europe in your game.

hmm also see Holstein grabbed Jylland.. always happens in my games as well.. maybe removing the land-link to copenhagen wasn't such a good idea?

Wellcome MarkShot to our community!

The aggressiveness-slider is not considered to be that important. I myself don't pay much attention to it. It is generally believed that if you put it in the direction of "furious" AI nations will wage war more and thus have less money left for other things, such as tech advancement, sending merhcants and colonists. No one of us players knows any exact figures in this math. If I want to have a real challenge and select a small nation to play I sometimes put the slider at furious just to make it more difficult for me to survive and expand in the beginning of the game. Try starting as Novgorod for example. Not at all one of the smales and poorest nations to choose but very aggressive neighbours and if you play on furious you can be almost assured that Moscow, Sweden et all will come after you within short time :)

The other slider is much more important. If you put it it's highest value it means that when you have made many bad and evil things in the game many nations will declare war on you automatically which can turn out to be a tough challenge. There is a specific threshold for this to happen, one which you will learn more about as time goes by and you read more posts. I can deduce from your position just now that if you had played on Very hard, as is the name of this difficulty, you would probably have been far away from this threshold. The main source of becoming a "Bad Boy", as the name for this is, is taking provinces from other nations in war and you have not increased your territory in a bad way that much so far although you seem to have expanded a lot but I suppose that you got some of these territories thru the specific inheritance events that Austria is blessed with.

Apart from this there are a lot of cheats the AI nations do to keep up the race with the human player. The less difficulty level the less number (and degree?) of cheats they use. I have never bothered to try to remember all those that I have heard mentioned on these pages. Apart from this I believe that the mor ediffuclt game you choose the more money the AI naitons will have relatively you. I am not sure about the facts on this point.

In toto I don't believe your position would have been much different.

There are a lot of us who are happy with trying to answer your questions. Just keep them coming.

However, there is one deity, called Johan, who knows the answers to all questions about the game. If you call his name in the proper manner it happens that he descends to us earthlings and grants you the answer to the question most dear to you. These moments are the most treasured ones among all of us. :)

Good luck and enjoy your game!:)

Does every play the game SP using the standard victory options or are the other options worthwhile too?

Thanks.

Well, after a few games you will notice that you will win the game VP-vise almost with any nation you choose and a little later with any nation. So VPs are more an interesting detail and one finds some amusement by observing how one achieves in the different areas upon which VPs are based.

You have to set up your own goals. There are something called "missions" that you choose if you want. Then you will have a special mission to complete (such as "conquer France") and this will get you VP or even, if you chose to play with mission as the main target of the game, a victory in the game. At least this is how I think it works. But I have never played with missions. I find it ahistorical and I instead just try to do my best, economically and province-vise, in all games.

With e.g. Austria, a strong nation, a reasonable goal for a beginner might be to get a medal in the hunt for VPs but perhaps something more than that, such as conquering France and all German speaking provinces. Do you think you can manage that?

I don't think the mission victory option is actually implemented.

I tried it with both the latest beta and 1.07 plain.

In both cases, the preamble to the game did not give me any mission info. The game launch pop-up did not give me any mission info. Hitting F1 simply produced a garbled text pop-up.

Too bad, I could see how it might be an interesting concept ...

So, you are saying that most people don't play for VPs, but play for some other type of objective. Which is kind of like self-defined missions.

Is there a list of intesting and worthwhile personal challenges out there?

Thanks!

Mission victory is not included in EU2.

As for self defined missions, World conquest is fun for some.
Others like to play the nation Historicaly, or role play.
Other goals are somewhat defined by the nation you select.

welcome!

there was a thread a few days about how you should play the game, i dont remeber what it was called but someone else might. whenever i play i try to keep my badboy below 15 (when you click the diplomacy button, hold your mouse over the reputation or the relationship text at the top) and unite all of my culture. recently, i am doing this as the papal states, along with taking over ethiopia 300 early :^)

the game has much potential for whatever you want to do, and if you're into history its a great time, even if you lose. if you like the events, try out the EEP. it adds about 3x the events, i think, and its great for that purpose.

Austria is one of the most powerful countries in the game, and playing as an intelligent person you'll be able to outperform the AI. I've seen Austria that big as an AI-run country (IMHO it's a little overpowerful). Try running a smaller or less advanced country - say, Brandenburg, is still quite powerful, but not the powerhouse Austria is.
