Typo of root, directory as in the folder where the game is installed. I assume there's a folder containing your mods that you just copy into your installation folder for the game to have them enabled when doing this.

Normally mods are under Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris but steam workshop mods have different pathing for its archive. Just copy them there won't make the game recognize them.
I can edit every one of them and place them there to make it work but it would take a long time...

you can test it this way: Open Stellaris through steam, when its open, go into your Stellaris/mod folder inside Documents, the game has generated several .mod files. Select them all, make them not overrideable and then Try to open Stellaris through its Default folder via Stellaris.exe. In my case, i cant see any difference with this

What do you mean with "not overridable"? Do you mean to make them Write-protected so that when you exit Stellaris, steam does not delete the .mod files?

So like many I have been having the stutter/lag in my Stellaris games, even at hour zero on pause. Let me first be clear, this is not a hardware issue, my computer can handle the game even in the end stages. When I play the game through steam (meaning I press play from my library) EVEN if I have the game run as an admin, it will lag, guarantee. BUT, if i run the game from my file explorer, I have zero stutter (had a fleet of 500k military power, manly battleships, fight the other dimensional end game crisis, even zoomed in on the thousands of fighters, didnt skip a single frame) I have tried everything, reinstall the game, verify, run admin, disable particles, maxfps, reinstall steam, optimize CPU, set priority to high in task. Like i said it is NOT a hardware issue, ive proven that when I run from the source file.

Does anyone have any idea what this is about? This is the only game ive ever experienced this with. Also if you experience this stutter with a good machine, try to run as admin from the source file, see if it works (let me know im not crazy).

Craving those responses.

Only downside is I can never start a new game on ironman mode, since it wont recognize steam cloud is on.

Edit: Had friend test, exact same thing. Even takes the game like 5 minutes to open from steam, about 30 seconds from source file. Zero lag from source file. Im not crazy.

Is this really the truth? Have other people confirmed it? It would be amazing if all along the community was just experiencing issues with steam when it comes to performance...

Propably a stupid idea but i heard on the steam forums it helped with stutters ; do not log-in to paradox account in the stellaris launcher
Hah, it was that simple? I've never logged in to my paradox account through stellaris before, but now that I do, yup, there's the stuttering everyone is complaining about right there.

Loading up a huge galaxy, I can't even scroll around the galaxy map while paused without stuttering. Log out of the account, reload the same save, and it's nice and smooth again.

It hits startup times too. I get 43 seconds from clicking play to the main menu becoming responsive after logging into my account, compared to 26 without. (Or with the patch, 18 seconds after logging into my account, and 9 seconds without.)

Edit: I can also confirm that I don't get stuttering or extended loading times if I launch without steam, even while logged in to my paradox account, so it seems to be the combination of launching through steam and being logged in to the paradox account that causes the problem. Either one on its own is fine.

Random update, recently my problem has solved itself. I launch the game from steam as an admin now and the stutter is gone. Maybe after launching from the source file so many times its learned some fix around?? I have not changed a single thing about how I launch it but it works now. So my advice, you can try not signing in, but if you want to play online/ or want achievements, have steam open but launch the game from the source file as admin. Periodically check if it works from your steam library to see if it has been fixed. This has been the strangest "bug" ive ever seen but I am very glad that some of you have been able to get rid of your stutter to enjoy such an amazing an beautiful game. Spread the word, leave no Empire behind, no man shall ever stutter again.

Wow, if the stuttering could be solved by doing this.... it would honestly blow my mind.

Could we have a quick recap of who else was able to reproduce this "fix" ? Will definitely try this when I am back home (if i find a save with huge galaxy - end game).

I can confirm that there is stuttering when I'm logged into Paradox AND load through Steam. If I don't sign into Paradox OR don't load Steam, I'm ok. I've got a super computer, so i'm 99% sure it's some relationship/sync issue with Paradox/Steam.

I hope PDX catches sight of this thread so they can see about optimizing the game by addressing the issues people here have fixed. This would be fantastic.

Hmmm... Did the test. I still have stuttering when i am zoomed in a galaxy with my 350k fleet (mix of everything). However, if I unselect the fleet and zoom out on the Universe then there is no stuttering.

Not sure we have the breakthrough we thought about or maybe i was lucky enough for my pc to handle the universe view without stuttering before...

Also, when I directly launch the game, Steam does not know i am running it so I highly doubt Achievement would work then...

Did the test twice:
1. W/o Steam but with PDX link
2. W/o Steam + w/o PDX link

Ok, I can confirm this. I have the same issue. Starting through Steam makes the game really stuttery, damn near unplayable.. But when starting through the folder, I can play 4K with everything set to high and 4X AA.
I have Win 10 Home, 64GB RAM, i7-5820K @ 4GHz and a GeForce 1070 Founders Edition.

What is funny is that when I start the game through Steam, I cannot even play the game on 1920x1080, no matter if all settings are low, the game still stutters and is near unplayable..

Tried it, over steam, whilst deactivating the Paradox Sign in. Lategame speed increased to ~2x.

Consider me amazed.
