So like many I have been having the stutter/lag in my Stellaris games, even at hour zero on pause. Let me first be clear, this is not a hardware issue, my computer can handle the game even in the end stages. When I play the game through steam (meaning I press play from my library) EVEN if I have the game run as an admin, it will lag, guarantee. BUT, if i run the game from my file explorer, I have zero stutter (had a fleet of 500k military power, manly battleships, fight the other dimensional end game crisis, even zoomed in on the thousands of fighters, didnt skip a single frame) I have tried everything, reinstall the game, verify, run admin, disable particles, maxfps, reinstall steam, optimize CPU, set priority to high in task. Like i said it is NOT a hardware issue, ive proven that when I run from the source file.

Does anyone have any idea what this is about? This is the only game ive ever experienced this with. Also if you experience this stutter with a good machine, try to run as admin from the source file, see if it works (let me know im not crazy).

Craving those responses.

Only downside is I can never start a new game on ironman mode, since it wont recognize steam cloud is on.

Edit: Had friend test, exact same thing. Even takes the game like 5 minutes to open from steam, about 30 seconds from source file. Zero lag from source file. Im not crazy.

I've not experienced this. There might be more to this. What is your operating system? Linux? Windows?

Did you try disabling steam overlay for the game?

There's a lot of games that have odd issues with the overlay, so I wouldn't be overly surprised at this. Though mostly it causes instability issues in my experience, rather than straight up performance issues.

interesting event, if steam is open/running and i open from source file, there is no lag but I can still use the steam overlay, as if I opened it with steam. So it seems the play button is breaking the game?

I run windows as well... Okay. When it comes to the lag you're saying, I'm suspecting a memory leak somewhere. To begin troubleshooting, go into your steam games and right click stellaris, open properties. At the top tabs, select local files and select "verify integrity of game files". Let that run then test again.

Then it might not be with the game itself then, but rather, with your steam client. Have you reinstalled steam app?

That's really odd then, would be interesting to see if we can get multiple people to test this on their machines and see what ends up happening.
thats why i posted, i couldnt find anything talking about this anywhere! But I have seen plenty of posts of people saying they have strong machines and have tried every fix to no avail. It leads me to think this could also be their problem, as the work around honestly doesnt make any sense. The only reason I figured it out was because I was too lazy to make it launch as admin from steam (at first, I have tried it since and it did not work), totally discovered the "fix" on accident.

I don't see this effect, but here's a few things to try I haven't seen mentioned yet. If you can track it to something specific, I might be able to add it to my performance patch.
Have you tried with steam in offline mode, or physically disconnecting your internet connection? If disconnected internet helps, does the stutter switch on/off if you reconnect/disconnect in game?
Does disabling steam cloud help?
Is your game modded? If not, does making a whitespace change to a file to change your checksum help?
Does the 1.7 beta behave in the same way as 1.6?

Stellaris does behave differently wrt steam when launched through steam compared to launched manually while steam is running. e.g. it calls SteamAPI_RunCallbacks 4x as often, which takes a global mutex and can block for a long time if steam is busy doing IO or something else lengthy in another thread.

If that performance issue can be verified, Paradox needs to find a way to get that happening for the Steam version ASAP, i think lag is the top beef people have with the game right now.

I tried it a bit seems to have some improvement. But I don't have all mod enabled when I tried it
Is there a easy way to transfer mods? Edit path of every mod I have seem to be a lot of work

What is roof directory? copy the entire workshop mod folder into stellaris folder or stellaris mod folder?

Typo of root, directory as in the folder where the game is installed. I assume there's a folder containing your mods that you just copy into your installation folder for the game to have them enabled when doing this.
