Sorry. I should have explained myself better. I was referring to the "go this way" issue, with you wanting to make territory "nigh impassable", which would just result in the AI repeatedly sending it's soldiers to death by attrition.

Ah, okay. Silly AI.

After seeing how much people started bickering about the duke/king issue I am horrified to think what kind of bloodshed there will be over stats.

Already sharpening my blade. And I think stats will only be a minor struggle, compared to the one about traits.
Oh god! I can already see the arguments now!

Guy 1 "Ned Stark should have the trusting trait!"
Guy 2 "But he was suspicious of the Lanisters!"
Guy 1 "That doesnt matter because he was still fooled!"
Guy 2 "I will personally see your entire family mudered!"
Guy 1 "Yeah well up yours!"

Ugh, that's going to be a pain. For the sake of avoiding the inevitable melee, I'd say we should just stick to the stats Grell gave characters in his mod, except where those stats are very blatantly wrong, like with Littlefinger having high Intrigue (fair enough) and only average Stewardship (no), or with Olenna Tyrell dying the year before Robert's Rebellion (very no).

Granted, this might only serve to limit it to the worst fights. But at least we'll have something to go on.

That makes sense.

And hopefully stats/traits won't be as contentious as the Duke-King thing. At least we won't be arguing based on pure speculation about how game mechanics that nobody has seen work. Also the stakes are lower--it's pretty easy to just change Ned's martial trait in your own copy of the mod; it's not so easy to change the whole political setup.

I have been reading throuh some of this thread and find it very interesting. I have been pondering the possibility of trying to mod something like this myself, and am glad to see that others are of the same thought. Some random thoughts:

Once the basics have been put to place, there is not too much of a hassle to construct neither a Robert's Rebellion, a War of the Five Kings nor a post-Dance of Dragons Scenario. Since the provinces are more or less the same, most of the work lies in switching province- and claim owners, as well as creating some new charachters. This is probably the easiest part of CK2 modding (it certainly was the easiest part of CK modding).

While I myself initally was more drawn to Grell's "Winds of Winter" scenario for CK1 that takes place after A Feast for Crows, I soon found that the consolidated more stable realms of Robert's Rebellion (where almost every province is indirectly controlled by one of the major houes) offered more long-term opposition. A War of the Five Kings-scenario might offer the same challenge, however.

As we know more about circumstances during and after Robert's Rebellion than Aegon's Conquest, I would start with modelling provinces after how they looked at the rebellion/start of AGOT. If one then wanted to make a Aegon's Conquest-scenario (I too love the idea of brooding on Dragonstone for a couple of decades, watching the other kingdoms duck it out, befor elaunching my masterfully planned invasion) you could basically re-arrenge province-ownership base don what little information we have (creating King Harren, and so on), let the rest be held by placeholder-rulers (to hold the place for Harren's vassals, as an example), untill more information is unveiled.

In any way, if a good map is made and basics are put in place, I predict all sorts of submods will appear :) Stats and traits are probably the easiest thing to mod in the game, so don't spend to much energy reaching an overall consensus there ;)

Speaking of scenarios, I brought it up early in the thread, but is anyone else interested in a scenario starting pre-Aegon's invasion? It'd definitely require quite a bit of invention as to characters, but seems to me that it would also provide a rather more dynamic set-up than settings from the books.

Yeah, I've suggested this a few times, and I still don't see any reason not to do it.

Yeah, I've suggested this a few times, and I still don't see any reason not to do it.
We don't know enough about the characters and the houses from that era.

My setup would be

Robert's rebellion
The War of the 5 Kings
The Boy King (where the books are right now)

Another possibility would be a "Fall of the Blackfyres" scenario taking place near the end of the Blackfyre rebellion.

You don't have to know much to have a fun scenario.

The folks we do know will be in the main scenario anyway, so that the ancestry of all the Starks/Lannisters/Targaryans etc. is right.

The ones we don't can be randomly generated by the game. We're gonna have to include Dragon mechanics if we ever want to add Danny to the mod, so those will be available to us.

Which means we'll have basically zero work to do to add this particular scenario. It could be a problem later on if GRRM ever starts writing books that fill in the details, but we'd probably have to add those details to the main mod anyway so that Stark-fanboys could click back on Robb's family tree to see the newly revealed brother from the Aegon's landing era.

We don't know enough about the characters and the houses from that era.

We know the major relevant houses and most of the kings, and CKII can fill in the gaps automatically. Here, here's the major characters we know of:

Principality of Dragonstone
Aegon Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone
Visenya Targaryen (older sister, wife to Aegon)
Rhaenys Targaryen (younger sister, wife to Aegon)
Orys Baratheon (bastard half-brother to Aegon)

Kingdom of the Iron Islands
Harren Hoare, called the Black, King of the Iron Islands and the Riverlands
Edmyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun, vassal to Harren
Victarion Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke, vassal to Harren

Kingdom of the Stormlands
Argilac, called the Arrogant, King of the Stormlands
Daughter of Argilac, Princess of the Stormlands (name unknown)

Kingdom of the Rock
Loren Lannister, King of the Rock

Kingdom of the Reach
Mern IX Gardener, King of the Reach
Harlen Tyrell, Steward of Highgarden (Master of Coin of the Reach?), courtier to Mern
Unknown Hightower, Lord of the Hightower, vassal to Mern

Kingdom of the North
Torrhen Stark, King in the North

The Night's Watch
Unknown Hoare, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, brother to Harren

These are just the characters that are specifically mentioned. A number of other houses (for example, Arryn, Martell, and Bolton) are known to have held their current titles since before the Conquest. The biggest problem I see is that the Storm Kings don't seem to have a house name. We also don't know the specific first names of a bunch of characters, so we might have to make those up. Either way, though, CKII's engine should automatically fill in any gaps with appropriate randomly generated characters, a la Rome (I think it may even do this with partially defined characters, so that in theory we could still use this mechanic and define nothing more than house names)

We know the major relevant houses and most of the kings, and CKII can fill in the gaps automatically. Here, here's the major characters we know of:

Principality of Dragonstone
Aegon Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone
Visenya Targaryen (older sister, wife to Aegon)
Rhaenys Targaryen (younger sister, wife to Aegon)
Orys Baratheon (bastard half-brother to Aegon)

Kingdom of the Iron Islands
Harren Hoare, called the Black, King of the Iron Islands and the Riverlands
Edmyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun, vassal to Harren
Victarion Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke, vassal to Harren

Kingdom of the Stormlands
Argilac, called the Arrogant, King of the Stormlands
Daughter of Argilac, Princess of the Stormlands (name unknown)

Kingdom of the Rock
Loren Lannister, King of the Rock

Kingdom of the Reach
Mern IX Gardener, King of the Reach
Harlen Tyrell, Steward of Highgarden (Master of Coin of the Reach?), courtier to Mern
Unknown Hightower, Lord of the Hightower, vassal to Mern

Kingdom of the North
Torrhen Stark, King in the North

The Night's Watch
Unknown Hoare, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, brother to Harren

....and their vassals and their vassal's vassals and their family members??

I'd worry more about the Dragons. Like Galle said, the game will automatically fill in undefined characters.

But nearly invincible super-weapons will be harder to get right. We can probably make some sort of super-unit to represent them, but will the AI ever realize that it has no chance and surrender, or will they all go down fighting like Black Harren?
