Game not working on windows 8

I realize that his has probably been addressed and I am slow, but I can't get CK2 (via steam) to work on my windows 8 laptop. It launch the initial screen telling me the mods/dlc (which is empty, but shouldn't be I have the SoI, Romans, Sunset, TOG, republics) then when I say start it doesn't do anything?

Could someone give me a hand, thanks.

Then: visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all .NET updates/patches it wants to, for all .NET versions.
