Okay, so I'm working on a mod that involves a whole lot of various things, like new nations, redistributed territory, ect ect.

I'm trying to test a couple of the nations I created(along with the territory redistribution) and I am at the end of my rope trying to figure out a problem here. I altered the 1936 scenario file to remove the countries that were taken out of the game as well as adding in the new countries, and also(simply because it would take too long to alter various treaties, ect) for the purpose of testing I took out the entire list of treaties, trades, and such.

What happens is that the scenario starts to load, the bar showing the loading process goes all the way to just over the Paradox symbol, and then it freezes. No error boxes appear...no error boxes hiding behind the screen...it just freezes. I cannot figure out why this is happening.

So what could I have done? Could it be I accidentally forgot to place a province somewhere under the correct controlling country? (For much of the redistribution I completely rewrote the national/controlled/owned province lists of several countries) Or is it something else I'm unaware of?

Hmm, perhaps there is an unassigned province, i hear that can cause a load screen 'hang'.

What i do (i'm just a dabbler at this point but i have ambitions) is modify/redistribute territory/create nation (and give it stuff) and then test it - one nation at a time.

If that works, then i backup my entire so-far-modded-and-working-folder and then continue from the original folder i started modding from with the next nation, and so on.

Unfortunately this means that usually i have three instances (or more) of HOI II on my system; the unmodified vanilla, a copy of that which i begin to mod and a backup of the latter which is constantly updated as i successfully implement my changes (although sometimes, when a large body of work is complete, i'll even back that up!).

It's awkward but i've run into the same kinds of problems you have so many times that i decided that multiple backups is the only way to go.

Avoid a large amount of divergent changes between tests. Do the provinces, then do the tech teams, then do the ministers, then do the OOB etc, testing (and backing up if successful) between each step before moving on to the next.

Without a step by step log of all of your changes i don't think anyone can really help you.

Good luck however, and if it's any consolation, it's always easier to do the next time around. .

One last question, then: If something such as a trade or a relation piece of code points to a nation that is not in existence, will this cause a loading hang? The new nation INC files refer to several other new nations I plan to create that I haven't created yet. If it turns out that there isn't an unassigned province anywhere, could this be the cause?

Ah, that might indeed be the cause of your problem.

I think you've probably not made any mistakes except in the order you've chosen to make them.

Get some provinces assigned to your new nations - even if just one if you're not sure on the borders etc just yet, and then test that that much is working - and then add everything else a nation needs, expanding its territory as you go along (or if the game is loading with just a raw nation with a single province, move onto your next new nation and so on. Finalise the trades, cabinets, leaders, etc last - that's my method anyway).

Nation first (defined tag, name, provinces, etc) then the 'internals' for that nation.

Again, im no expert, but as i'm sitting here (slowly) modding HOI II myself i thought i'd offer my advice.

To the first question, probably no, but could if an event points to one and then fires 'after' the game is afoot.

But, what exactly do you mean, 'piece of code'?

Inc files only come into play IF called or as you say pointed to by the scenario eug. file.

An unassigned province will not hang loading unless chronic and still you should get error messages. Get any of those?

No loading at all is more likely a global file mishap not so much 'scenario' specific.

Generally not good to mod by memory, better copious notes. Some kind of paper trail to go back over.

I decided to try out the suggestion of testing the countries one at a time. The country I tried to test with was a very small country, only four provinces. I removed the ownership of those provinces from the country they originally belonged to, and tried testing it leaving everything else as it was originally.

Everything loads fine until it tries to load my new inc file, at which point it says it can't open the inc file. It doesn't matter what I name it; it simply can't open it.

Ok sorry, I never did anything except near exactly as vanilla, but the logic is that it does not matter I guess.

Sometimes inc. files corrupt. I would pull another that works and copy over the inards of U00 into it and save as deseret.inc.

Which by the way is another point. Does the file tree list the new country file with .inc?

It loaded, though, and otherwise seems to work just fine. It just said it "has errors" which confuses me.

That most likely means that this countries assigned controlled and owned province list is in conflict with another country trying to control or own a same province.

The scenario can generally endure one or two such errors, but it is not well to let it stand un-corrected.

Hmm...you're probably right.

I went through and looked at it...I noticed Corpus Christi (748) wasn't on the list for some reason... I corrected that but it didn't get rid of the error message. (I did proceed to alter many other province assignments for a few nations successfully up to a point before it started freezing again, which probably means the conflict became too severe somewhere and I'm just not seeing it.)

So what I will do is set this aside for the moment and get some sleep. Thanks again for your help, and I will post in the morning/whenever if I need more assistance.
