I'm playing my first real game of Rome. When I hit December 24, 544 AVC, the game freezes up. I've reloaded several times and tried different actions, but on that date exactly the game just stops. It seems as though it's definitely trying to access files: the hardrive access light is going haywire, and it's eating up 1.5 gigs of ram. Anyone know what's going on here, or if there's a way to fix it? As I said, I can't identify any event which should be firing on that date: nothing I'm doing in the game should finish on on December 24, 544 AVC - no buildings, army movement, character retirements, etc.
yes, it's fully updated to the newest version of Vae Victus. I checked.
I can't figure out what's going on. Nothing seems to happen at all on that date. I'd prefer not to start over without some kind of soluition, or at least knowing what to avoid.
Second, is there a mod which fiddles with the missions? Many of the missions in the game are a little dull, and I tend to get some over and over ("Take control of Macedon," for instance). I can "win" the Carthage mission easily, but not actually do anything to really hurt Carthaginian power - then the game ignores them in the missions. Or I just build a building and then go right back to the other missions. But there's no sublety to it, and no thought required.
What I really like to see is a scenario where you pick missions, or have it dependant on your leader. Have options for military, mercantilist, civic, and religious. The mission would then be generated randomly from a list of missions for that faction. Military might be crushing a horde, conquering a province, or simply building up some forces. Mercantilist could be expanding trade, building Forums, building a navy (for pirate hunting) - you get the picture.
However, I love many things about the game. It's a little erratic, but it's also a neat distillation fo everything Europa Universalis comes down to.
