game freezes after a few minutes on macbook pro

hey there,

i just got the game yesterday and it doesnt really work for me. i can play fine for a few minutes (maybe 10-15) but then the game randomly freezes and locks my mac. i can still hear the ingame sound and i can move the crusor, but everything else fails and i have to hard-reset.

i tried the common suggestions (delete - reinstall - verify), but no luck... everytime i start to play the game freezes after a few minutes. any idea what the problem might be?

System:
MBP early 2011
2,7 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
OS X 10.9

Your video card is below the minimum required to run the game, but that should just make it slow, not crash.

What version and checksum show on the main game menu? Are you running any mods?

Hello Andrew, thanks for taking the time to answer.

I bought the game via steam, so i guess i must have the latest version... no?

It reads: 2.0.1 (XFMJ) in the bottom left corner.
I am runing no Mods and no DLCs, just the vanilla game since i wanted to test it first before investing in any additional content.

Regarding overall performance, the game runs awesome as long as it runs. no slowdowns, no stutter, no graphical errors - nothing, everything great! but as i said, after 10min it just locks-up my system and i have to hard-reset the computer.

does this help? i really like the game and woul love to enjoy it more then just 10min

edit:
just wanted to add that the steam-overlay dosnt work either, it is no big deal for me but maybe the problems are connected somehow so i thought to write it down.

so wanting to play the game i tried several other things, one of them is to revert to the old 1.111 version - and guess what? no crashes anymore, the game works flawlessly for the last 2h, plus the steam-overlay works with the old version.

so i guess the devs introduced some problems with the update. anyway, my support ticket is -not- cleared (since i would like to play the latest version and later get into the DLCs) but for now i can finaly play the game


edit: well, it got better - but the game still crashes (although it takes longer). so there seems to be problem, any way to fix it?

Just so you know, posting here is not creating a 'support ticket'. We're just fellow players who volunteer here, you are not officially contacting Paradox. The way to log an official ticket is at paradox.zendesk.com .

I play the Mac version and I don't get any of your issues. I do get the Steam overlay too, so I suspect you have an installation problem, even though your checksum is right. What happens if you don't run Steam at all, and just run eu4.app ? How about if you run the launcher, EuropaUniversalisIV.app , with or without Steam active?

I have got exactly the same issue with my CK2 on MBP late 2011:

2,8 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
OS X 10.8.2

Is there any solution?

Why are you on 10.8.2? You need to update your OS X to at least 10.8.5 to get decent video drivers.

OK, now edit settings.txt and reduce the complexity of the graphics:

draw_shadows=no
draw_reflections=no
draw_ambient_objects=no

Hi AndrewT. I have tried you solution and the game still freezes sometime. It seems like it depends of save file size. At the beginning of play when a save files are small this issue doesn't occures.

Save game size is probably a fair reflection of the complexity of the game situation at that time. You could test your theory by asking for help in the User Mods forum in trimming the save game size down, there's bound to be a lot of history etc that could be deleted with no real change in gameplay.

Sorry, I forgot one:

low_res_textures=yes

This goes at the end just under force_pow2_textures=no , if it's not there already.

Also, are you playing with any mods active?


If that doesn't help I really don't have anything else to try, sorry. Hopefully 10.9.1 will have better video drivers that will allow under-spec video cards to to work better.

Actually he means ck2.app or ck2game.app.

In general i suggest trying this (disabling Steam community ingame), as it helped some for at least two kind of problems regardings Macs.
