Hello all. I have this problem. The game freezes randomly & in no way I can go back to windows task manager & close the game from there. Screen freezes, music still plays on until the track ends, then no more music either, just frozen screen and nothing happens. No way I know to go back to the desktop works, no ALT+TAB, no CTRL+ALT+DELETE, no ALT+F4, nothing. I noticed this the first time I reached around mid-game, say around 1250 or so, on a 1066 start. Now that I have TOG, it happened again around midgame, 1135-ish. I have the steam version of the game and some dlc, no mods at all. Windows XP. The game, after I hit midgame, is just unplayable. This freeze can happen multiple times per day & the only way to get out & restart from the last save, is to hit the restart button on the pc. I appreciate any help, thank you.

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install GPU-Zand CPU-Z, or SPEEDFAN.

That all looks basically fine, except that you're on XP - that only lets the game use 2gb of your memory, and the game can want more than that since recent updates. Are you using any mods?

If there's no chance you're going to upgrade to Win7 or Win8, you can you this method of making XP use up to 3gb of memory

Sorry for the delay AndrewT, I had some problems with my connection & could not log in & tell you of the temperatures. The 3bg memory trick did not work, I still got the freeze problem even after I did the trick. Anyway, these are the temperatures:
GPU= 52c-53c *after 30 minutes ---> GPU= 65c
Core 0= 37c-38c *after 30 minutes ---> Core 0= 43c
Core 1= 37c-38c *after 30 minutes ---> Core 1= 43c

Can you see in the ctl-alt-del "processes" menu how much memory the game is now using? What version and checksum show on the main game menu? Are you using any mods?

I see you run Windows in 1024x768 but the game in 1360x768 - a bit of an odd pairing. Can you try setting them both to, say, 1280x1024 ?

Those temps also look OK, but your problem smells like a video card issue - overheating or simply faulty, if none of the above bear fruit. Do you have access to another machine ti try the game on?

1) The memory use is 116.012k.
2) 1.111 (MLYP).
3) No mods at all, just vanilla game (steam) & some dlc.
4) I run windows in 1024x768 & the game in 1360x768? I didn't even know that... I know how to set the game to 1280x1024, but the windows? Like I said, I'm a noob on that kind of stuff. Oh, if you mean right click desktop, go to properties etc, it's on 1360x768, that's why I run the game on the same size.
5) I know my video card is ancient, it is the next thing I'm gonna upgrade. Unfortunately I cannot try the game on another machine.

But your dxdiag says Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz) ? I see it was taken a month ago, can you perhaps create another one for us please?

Yes your video card is old but well above the minimum requirement, so I don't believe that is the problem; conceivably there's a hardware fault in that area though.

Let's try making a few settings changes and see if it does any better. In settings.txt change these lines

fullScreen=no

master_volume=0

draw_trees=no
draw_rivers=no

draw_citysprawl=no

low_res_textures=yes

and let us know if it helps at all.

Hmm, if possible, tell me how to make a new dxdiag... I think the old one is not from CKII at all... I found it via searching start menu & found it in a completely different file, of a completely other game... my bad. Tell me how to make one for CKII & I'll send it in a glimpse of an eye. Then, when you see the new one, I'll continue with changing the stuff in settings.txt.

You don't make a dxdiag.txt for CK2 in particular, you just make one of your machine in its current state - it knows nothing about apps or games. Just run dxdiag.exe
