Game Date - Does it have a function?

I'm trying to create a save of a city that I can use to then build from. But so far, it has a taken me two game years to create the city. I'm curious if that date affects anything in-game ...

Not that I'm aware of, it's just an arbitrary measure of time as far as I can tell.

It's obviously used to measure the age of your citizens, who live about 6 game years. No other use in sandbox play, but scenarios often have time limits.

To be clear: sandbox play is just loading a map and building, correct? Not sure scenarios are ...

When you start a new game you should see a "Scenarios" tab, next to where you choose map, there will only be scenarios available if you have the Natural Disasters or Mass Transit DLC, or if you have downloaded a scenario from the Workshop.
And yes "Sandbox" is just playing the game (without a scenario)
