Game Crashing at Loading Screen

Hi, ive been playing ck2 for awhile and havnt had any major problems. recently i installed the Elder Kings mod and i had to backdate my ck2 to 2.1.6. All was working fine until i decided to update it to the latest version so i could play vanilla. Ever since then it always crashes at startup during "Loading Sounds, Loading Flags, Processing Flags". I was wondering if there is a fix. Ive reinstalled the game, twice. Verified cache but to no avail. the problem signature is as follows:

*Note* Backdating the game to 2.2.1 seems to work.

Please try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

Oh, so this is the first time you've run 2.3.x ? Hmm, that really should work though.

If you exit Steam and manually run ck2game.exe, does that work?

Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log .

I HAVE played on 2.3.x previously, its just i backdated to be able to play a mod, then went back to 2.3 then i encountered this issue.

In that case, the clean re-install above should put the game to exactly how it was before the problem happened. Are you 100% sure you deleted ALL remaining files and folder from BOTH the Steam/ck2 AND Docuements/ck2 areas (except save games) ?

Please do that again, carefully making sure the deletes are complete before the re-install. If it still fails, then delete again JUST the documents/paradox/ck2/gfx/flags/ folder, nothing else.

I feel like an idiot. i deleted the local content and presumed it would've deleted the ck2 file in steam/common but it had some leftover files in there. I deleted them and reinstalled the game and it worked perfectly. Biggest thanks and sorry for taking your time

The Steam "Delete Local Content" option only removes files that Steam put there. If that mod placed files there too (which it really shouldn't) then Steam will leave them there, as it should.
