Summary

Game crashes with GOG version on Lutris with proton (Glorious Eggroll) version 7 43

Description

Launcher can start, but game doesn't. If started via launcher then no real error can be seen except an entrypointnotfound exception. Launching the game via the exe directly gives the error attached in the trace_segment.txt.

Once the error reporting tool crashes the error in post_report.txt is shown. The error tool crashes quite quickly so the two errors (and messages) might be related.

Steps to reproduce

Start the game in lutris with proton runner either directly or via the launcher.

Platform

GoG

Same issue, same exact trace with the same assertion failures, functions, line numbers, and error codes.

GOG version 77973.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 with lutris-GE-Proton8.1 runner, with VKD3D 2.8 and D3D Extras v2. latest nvidia driver (530.41.03).

In short, everything as up to date as humanly possible. I have also reduced all graphics settings to their minimum by directly editing the config file (PlatformSettings0.cfg). So my only hope at this point is the hotfix/patch.

Is there any ETA for this? As of this writing the GOG download page only has the launch version of AoW4 (77973).

Thanks!

Updated GOG version to 77988, same series of assertions:

Assertion failed at C:\.workspace\src\Creator\RE\Source\REv5\Implementation\DX12\VERFImplDX12.cpp (2275): SUCCEEDED(Result) ((SUCCEEDED(Result) @ VERFImplDX12.cpp:2275)DX12 function failed with error 0x80070057)

followed by crash, followed by crash reporter crash, so no minidumps to share unfortunately.

Same thing for me. Also tried different runners, explicitly lutris-GE-Proton8-1 and WineHQ staging (8.7).
DXVK v2.1
VKD3D v2.8
D3D Extras v2
DXVK NVAPI v0.6.2
All of these should be newest you can get without building something yourself. Also tried some older but it's always the same assertions errors.
GPU: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 10 [Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT] (rev c4)
Drivers as by the default repositories of a completely updated Kubuntu 22.10.

The May 4th update which came out just now has not solved my issue. Startup is still essentially unchanged. Log file attached, crash dump unfortunately not available.

I see there is an option to enable a workaround and several NVIDIA cards enable it by default. Not one AMD card is among them. Since I have an AMD card I would like to give the workaround a shot but the game crashes before I can reach the settings menu. I have no problem editing PlatformSettings0.cfg by hand but I would need to know the key to add (and what values, especially if it's more interesting than true or false).

In accordance with the information provided to me in the patch release thread I have added
Video.DriverWorkaround=true
to PlatformSettings0.cfg. Unfortunately, that did not lead to a detectable change. I have also upgraded the system to Kubuntu 23.04 in the hope of grabbing a more recent AMD driver in the process. Same lack of detectable effect.

Update: adding Age of Wonders 4 (GOG install) to linux steam as a non-steam game and then selecting proton 8.02 as the compatibility tool gets the job done for me, at least as far as getting past the initial crash goes.

Interestingly enough, after steam installs the Proton 8.0 runtime I can use lutris to select it as a runner but it *still* crashes, which tells me there's still something else going on in the lutris environment; or perhaps some fix that steam auto-loads. There's not a whole lot of configuration for Proton within steam itself.
