I have also tried running it as XP but game still crashes
It crashes right after movies finishes to load..when I renamed avi folder and started the game..it just crashes

I'm also running HoI2 in Vista 64-bit... Armagadden 1.2 to be precise. The problems I've had include the game locking up, and other times the graphics become garbled. I've renamed the avi to aviBack as has been suggested elsewhere, and I'm also using the latest driver for my video card. My system is a Q9450 Core 2 quad-core CPU, 8GB RAM, eVGA GTX 280 SC video card (driver version 181.22), eVGA 750i SLI FTW mobo, 24" 1920 x 1080 LCD monitor. I've tried various things, and while I haven't been able to completely eliminate the problem, I have managed to reduce the occurrences. In the nVidia Control Panel -> Flat Panel Scaling, I had the "Use nVidia scaling with fixed-aspect ratio" option checked. I changed it to "Use my display's built-in scaling" (which my display doesn't have), and the problem occurs less frequently now. The game screen is stretched to use the entire display, but it doesn't look bad.

I'd would love for there to be a solution to this problem, but I'm afraid I'll be waiting until HoI3 comes out to get a HoI game that works well with Vista 64-bit. At least, it had BETTER work well with Vista 64-bit! :)

*EDIT* I thought I would also point out that even if the game doesn't crash while I'm playing, after I quit a session of HoI2, I have to hard reboot. If I click on anything else to run, the computer will lock up. When I choose to restart the computer, it will still lock up, so I have to hard reboot.

I'm pretty sure the entire problem has to do with the DirectX 8 that HoI2 uses. I also have problems with Space Empires V due to it's use of DirectX 8 and my using Vista 64-bit, although the problems with SEV manifest themselves as low FPS, which can be ameliorated somewhat by turning off Font Smoothing before playing.
