They must have turned off key distribution again, this is necessary when they run out of keys or have other issues. I'm sure it will be resolved next week.

they can't have run out of keys in my case. because i have purchased the game some weeks back and thus have purchased a key that belongs to me. i have seen this key but didn't 'write' it down as i expected it to be recoverable via the steam app at my desire seeing as i paid for it.

The key is actually generated/issued the first time you ask to see it, I think, so it's possible you did actually miss out for the moment. Edit: oh, I re-read what you said and it appears you did see it already. Follow the instructions given to you above, they are correct.

You didn't pay for the key, by the way, you paid for access to the game via Steam; such is the nature of Steam, you own a license to access the game and some people argue that you don't actually own the game itself. That's a bit extreme in my opinion but in a way they're right; there are a lot of games where losing access to Steam means losing access to the game itself.

Giving you a developer-issued CD key is an extra feature that relies on co-operation between Steam and the developer, and there are many games where there is no such service (and some where the developer, ahem EA, will actually no longer recognise the keys given). Given the success of both the game and the workshop integration however, I am sure Steam and CO/Paradox will continue to work together in this regard.

What? No.

CD keys were present but were disabled for the time being because the demand outstripped the supply of generated CD keys. I am not even sure what you are talking about here.

ok er ?!

i have a cdkey and have been shown this key by steam before so all garbage about demand / ownership etc is just that.

given that i have seen the key previous it has been USED - re presenting to someone else is not going to happen,

now given i have been issued a key , have previously seen it - i have one that i should be able to see/retrieve again regardless of the who owns what tripe.

Left click on your game in the Steam Library, click "View CD key", although bear in mind that this feature is currently disabled for Cities Skylines. yeah but er... my demand has been supplied already. disabling this due demand outstripping the supply of automatic generation of cd keys is not correct as they have sold far fewer than the billions required to use even a small % of the avaliable keys possible to generate. disabled because their process of automatic generation of cd keys was found lacking might be more likely.

Sorry to seem stupid but I've just got a message showing a cd key and to paste it when I start the game. So it's not needed for the game? But it's needed to register the game with Paradox? If so why does it need to be registered here and how is that done?

But it's needed to register the game with Paradox? If so why does it need to be registered here and how is that done?
For most Paradox games registering that you own the game on these forums gives you access to the tech support and mods subforums for that game. It's part of their approach to tackling piracy - if you legitimately own the game you can register it and get help/mods, if you don't you can't. I think the registration for access has not been enforced for Skylines so far due to the forum switch that took place about a week after the game was released.

Plus as Japamala says you get a collection of pretty little icons beneath your username! :)

Thanks for the info. I've registered and got a chirpy lol. I sometimes forget that today's games are so integrated. I'm old school ( Still have my zx81,spectrum and vic20 ). Used to be you buy the game, look for the key in the book, install and play. Now you have to be online and deal with steam and cloud on top of the developer's requirements. Suppose the plus side is you get forums like this where you can get info and help. :)
