Well from the research ive done, i can say the Germanic Tribes learned thier Fortiefing from the Romans due to the nessecaty to protect themselfs from them and they already had the basic knowladge before hand but didnt use more complex ones until far later during the Romans incursion into Germania itself, from the Migratory point of view, the largest Tribes were Germanic, even the Gallic stemd from them, but apart from that Germanic tribes were the largets, spreading from far north Europe down again, and into the Eastern Baltic and futher down, The was one Germanic tribe around the Wichsel and i cant remember which now it was one of the Goth's and they started to migrate due to the fact the Huns were invading and coming closer and closer to them so they spread and migrated SE to Crimea, then futher towards Romania, Bulgarie etc, back up North through Slavia, above Italia, over to Gaul, and into Spain, and even to the North of Africa, to Carthaige, on the way alot of those Goths setteled in the places mentioned and build up new Empires/Chiefdoms, although some being forced yet again by the Hun at a later date. once the Eastern Baltics and part of Eastern Europe were more or less empty, incame the Slavs from the East, after the Huns, reasons i dont know why, but gues they wanted to get away from them too eventualy, thierby settleing in large parts of Eastern Europe and integrating with the leftover tribes etc.
Thats my understanding of it
