Since it's a bit boring to have only one giant fleet, I was wondering if there could be some cosmic events and tweaks to the combat system that could encourage to split them, like it is necessary in EU4.

Like, galactic storms that can happen independently or during combat or special ship types or weapons that are more destructive against larger fleets, etc. (I am thinking along the lines of the spanish Armada).

I'm just starting to explore the game, sorry if there is a solution for this later on that I don't know yet. o_O

The problem is the combat system in the first place. You have in and out of combat statuses, there's no micro management or ways to change your tactics mid fight, the defence and weapon systems are boring, small, lack variety, and the best stuff is arbitrary to win, the three weapon types are poorly balanced against one another.

There's also a lack of variety im weapons that are any use, range is king in combat, ships are produced too slowely, navigation around the galaxy is too fast, recourses have little value so attacking mining stations is pointless, spaceports and static defences suck. Period. Defending a planet is impossible if you don't have a fleet nearby.

All this speculation about how to solve doomstacks is kind of pointless when it is the very basis of the combat system that encourages them and without changing that they will always be a viable, and broken, strategy.
