The phoenicians had very good navy and because Carthage was at beginning their colony the carthaginians improved their knowledge very much. In the first romano-carthaginian war, romans were losing because of Carthage superior nave, but then they developed a navy-bridge between 2 navies so they could fight like on ground with the enemy ships. That brought the romans the victory of Sicilia.

There are evidences that seem to point in the direction of them having been in America, but I don't think that anyone claims that they had steady contact with the new world, they just seem to have gotten there, as their ship technology wasn't good enough to make regular contact. And actually, it is said that western africans reached America before they did, and that's from who the Olmecs descend.

actually, the first people to reach america was the swiss people, although they are landlocked they did it it is 94,89767% proven my sources are books you know
