Gaining independence in a War to lower CA

Hi

I just recenly gained independence by accident.

My ally King of Bavaria and me (King of Germany and Denmark) were fighting with a few minor allies against the emperor, which would have been quite easily won (we were at 98% winscore), when the emperor of the HRE called the emperor of the byzantine empire to arms. The war was then fought out for many years (about 10 years), during which my faction always had the upper hand, but never managed to get the 100%. Then, all of sudden, the war was over, with the HRE lowering their CA AND all of the rebelling countries gaining independece.

So, here my question:

Is this supposed to happen like this after a while?

Was CA already at autonomous vassals? If so, lower CA will destroy that nation as whole.

I think it was medium CA, and the nation (--> the empire) was not destroyed. It just "released" all of the revolting countries into independence. The other parts of its empire remained vassals of the HRE

were there other wars in the empire during your wars? AFAIK "put pretender on a cheir" also lowers CA as a side effect. Maybe CA was lowered to Autonomous vassals that way?

Edit: Also, were you in "Independence" faction? maybe leader of that faction made his demand and emperor decided to grant it without a war?

It sometimes happen, when CB becomes invalid and it is imposible to restore prewar situation, for example your leash died and his titles were inherited by your ally at war or his primary title was destroyed/usurped somehow.
