Lately, I have been reading a lot of books about diffusionism in mankind's past. For those of you that don't know, diffusionism is the thought that the old and new worlds influenced each other to one degree or another. some feel that there was little to no contact, others, what is called the school of "hyper diffusionism" think that the ancient peoples (usually egyptians, sumerians and phoenician/punic peoples) actually founded amerindian and pacific cultures.

personally, i do feel there was a good deal of contact between the old and new worlds, but that the various civilizations influenced each other only in ways similar to post-columbian civilizations.

my idea though, is to postulate an alternate world where the vikings and celts and brythonic peoples, were a little more aggressive in their alleged exploration and colonization of the north american continent.

in the pacific, both the islands and the americas, i would like to see chinese and japanese peoples (japanese = jomon culture, chinese = shang dynasty and several others) populating the coast.

this wouldn't really have changed history much, but i think it would add some flavor to the game. have a california that fights for its independence from mexico from baja to seattle, with asians and indians and spanish exiles from Emperor Iturbide's Mexico against the new Republican Mexico government. In the east, an Iroquios Confederacy that never fell, never submitted to the United States, dominating western new york, which sports a hybrid amerindian-european culture.

the northeast and new england would still be filled with various indians, we can imagine that their tribes were a little more successful in unifying, so there would be amerindian pops in the us territory, but they would need to be pacified and would rise up and rebel if not treated well.

this mod won't require too much work, i just want to know if anyone would be willing to play it if i made it over the next few weeks? i am still considering whether or not to include it into VIP or Vanilla 1.04 since i have both. i am thinking VIP, but then i have to decide which culture tag to eliminate so i can make an Algonquin one (since the indians in the northeast were algonquin) and decide on the new pops, since the US would undoubtedly be a little more populous in certain areas, and also get the Iroquois Confederacy set up and figure out which nation to delete if i do VIP. I also might want a few more revolt nations like the Huron and the Wampanoag, Narragensett, Micmac ... some of the tribes that might have survived a little stronger had they interbred heavily with Celtic-Viking-Brythonic settlers.

this wouldn't really be a mod i guess, just more of an adaptation/flavor to Victoria. who would be interested in seeing something like this? does anyone else have any other ideas?

EDIT: OMG i forgot too, i was reading the book 1421 also and i thought i would like to see Australia and New Zealand be indepdent nations from the start of the game, both of these places being a fusion of Aborigine-Maori-Chinese and Hindu nations. Zheng He's treasure fleet may actually have visited these places regularly, and it isn't impossible that if the Ming Dynasty hadn't killed their navy so quick and so hard, that some colonists may also have left. Then again, it could also have been established sometime in the past too. Who knows? :)

The understatement of the year I belive.

If you do a mod and say it doesnt changged history, that is sort of one thing, but to say if the colonisation of even celt/bretons and chinese happend before Colombus didnt have an inmpact on the course of history that I belive would be wrong.
The north european nation would have been trading with such colonies, the indians would have traded with them, have an advantage with knowledge about our way of life, laws, education and weapons.

The chinese settlers would have stopped any european settlements on the westcoust so it would exist independent chinese states there, or chinese-indian states or been part of a superchina

Btw, why celtic and breton settlers? They didnt do much of seafaring that I know about?

EDIT: Why not take some exiting mod that already have som of the simultions in it, like compined Vinland scenario, VIP, byzantium still exist and so on, and edit theme some more with starting stats and nice events :)

well, that is an idea but it is more work than i have time to give to the project.

my reasoning for it "not changing history" much is that the colonization would have been light and in the form of trading posts and some interbreeding and cultural exchange. this way, the indians would have been a little stronger on both sides of the ocea, allowing them to possibly check US expansion. also, if the US gets a little unstable, then you would see indian as well as the usual uprisings against the government, possibly allowing for the reestablishment of several indian nations in the east.

as far as the celts and peoples of brittany go, i wanted to include the celts because Professor Barry Fell (America B.C, Saga America, Bronze Age America) has found evidence, although it is suspect, that Ogham writing celts had a presence in north america. there are many dolmens and menhirs and other megaliths in the northeast and nobody really knows where they came from. legend has it also, that people from brittany were fishing in the grand banks just off of new foundland and nova scotia, almost within view of land, a few decades before columbus. one can easily imagine a storm marooning several fishing boats and the consequences of that happening.

i am sure if people want to, they could go ahead and do a whole vinland scenario, however i was just looking for more cultural and political dynamic in the united states and maybe avenues for Euro nations to exploit new weaknesses in the continent.

plus, i like the idea of a california made up of chinese-japanese-yankee-mexican-spanish-apache settlers fighting a stronger Empire of Mexico alongside the mormons.

i do admit that IRL, if the colonization was as extensive as some suggest, history would be markedly different and the united states would be ruled by some form of althing and be a scandanavian-amerindian republic. however, they just didn't exploit their early discoveries enough. :(

the indians would have been a little stronger on both sides of the ocea,

Yes, its true and would be nice, i do include that in a scenario of my own

as far as the celts and peoples of brittany go, i wanted to include the celts because Professor Barry Fell (America B.C, Saga America, Bronze Age America) has found evidence, although it is suspect, that Ogham writing celts had a presence in north america. there are many dolmens and menhirs and other megaliths in the northeast and nobody really knows where they came from. legend has it also, that people from brittany were fishing in the grand banks just off of new foundland and nova scotia, almost within view of land, a few decades before columbus. one can easily imagine a storm marooning several fishing boats and the consequences of that happening.

Well, some "professors" have found evidence of runestones that is evidence that the vikings had a civilisation several 100 of years :) in vinland...
But the celt present (with I doubt) would be several of hundred of years older than the brittany fishermen. That said, of course the possibility of a discovery of fishermen would change the history in that direction, since they would have been more intrested in trade than in conquest.

(All discoveries and evidece of european presens in america are usually nationalromantic search for a longer past.)
i am sure if people want to, they could go ahead and do a whole vinland scenario,

Someone made it, but with a pagan population next to a USA, just changed a few provinces.

plus, i like the idea of a california made up of chinese-japanese-yankee-mexican-spanish-apache settlers fighting a stronger Empire of Mexico alongside the mormons.
Well, except for the yankee part, since the concept of yankee is based on all imigrants will become americans rather than spanish, swedish, english andsoon

Wouldn´t be cool with a japanese/indian warrior culture with samurai bushido zen-buddism-tribal religion and codex. :D

i do admit that IRL, if the colonization was as extensive as some suggest, history would be markedly different and the united states would be ruled by some form of althing and be a scandanavian-amerindian republic. however, they just didn't exploit their early discoveries enough. :(
Well the common belife is that the indians slaughtered the settlement and the norse didnt think it was worth the effort since its never been a problem with livingroom up in scandinavia until the nineteen century :)
