I'm playing as Germany and I've just Vichy'd France and have Hungary and Romania as allies so far. Spain's civil war is still dragging on with Nationalist Spain in the north and Republican Spain in the south. I need access to the Mediterranian so I decided to take Spain like I normally do.

I declare on Nationalist Spain and they join the allies so of course then all of them are at war with Republican Spain (lol).

I'm almost finished with Nationalist Spain so I think I'll go ahead and start on Republican Spain (they are not in the Axis, just at war with the Allies).

Then the weirdness starts. After I click to declare war, I get a message that Rep Spain has joined the Allies. Upon examining them in the diplomatic screen I see that they are indeed one of the Allies, but that they are also still very much at war with every one of them also. This is confirmed not only by the colors on the map but also by the text in the description box.

Then I notice that I'm not red when Rep Spain is selected and sure enough I'm not listed as being at war with them either.

So, determined to take their land, I again click to declare war and I guess the game was just too confused to go on because at that point the whole thing crashed to desktop.

Ah well.

Anyone had this happen before? You think it'll happen again when I load the save?

Just ally with Nat. Spain. I think they received a major boost technologywise in 1.06 because I was reather surprised when I started a game as Nat Spain in 1936. although it may be wise to assume military control once you get a landbridge to Africa since the AI has the tendency to walk al the way to Cueta and Bata (the Italians as well by the way).

And I think it will crash again, you can hardly expect it not to if a country is both at war with and part of 2 different alliances .

The Baltic states also may cause this if you, as Germany, DoW them right after Russia does. Then everyone is at war with everyone, BUT Germany and Russia aren't at war with each other. This has a tendency for the computer to have fits and childishly quit the game.

I thought I'd found a brilliant way out when I decided I would get military access from Nat Spain and help them conquer Rep Spain quickly by using exp forces. I planned then to turn around and DOW Nat Spain and thus aquire the whole country (I like the placement ability on the African continent as well as the Mediterranian access).

I'd just started moving panzers into northern Spain, however when it CTD'd on me AGAIN. I have no idea what confused it this time since I'd not declared on anyone or done anything ambiguous.

DOWing Spain

You should have DOW'd both Rep. and Nat. Spain at the same time and when defeated them annexed them at the same time as well. I think if you do that then AI gets confused who to support and doesn't DOW anyone. (I always do this when playing Italy before main war starts and never get DOW'd by allies) Never tried it as Germany yet!
