Can anyone recommend a nation that can be "released as a vassal" at the beginning of the GC?

I've played as Jerusalem but was whacked pretty early. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd think it would require one with multiple provinces... the ones I can think of off the top would be Normandy (releaseable as England, with 2 provinces), Sicily (Aragon, 2 provinces) and Asturias (Castile, 2 provinces). Might be something viable in Poland or Lithuania as well, and perhaps one of the southern Iberian ones like Almohad.

If you can wait a little ... Persia (released by the Timurids - not sure of the exact date, but circa 1480)

Can Genoa release Corsica? or does it only form if it revolts successfully?

There are also the Golden Horde's subject states: Kazan, Ukraine, Astrakhan, Crimea.
And the Armenians.

I appreciate the suggestions. Amrenia sounds like it could be fun.

The biggest thing I've always enjoyed about this game is how I can save a game, then take it in different directions to see what might happen.

About the funnest game I ever played was as the Puritans. About 1700 or so they split from England and over the course of the next 20 years or so 3 other provices joined them. I saved the game and took over and had a blast staying alive and expanding a little. Cool stuff!

Fear the empire of Dracula!

In a recent GC (AGCEEP v 1.36) I had something very strange happen. Firstly, Austria is pathetically small, having been whomped on early by Genoa and Poland. Seemingly as a result of this, the OE got all of Hungary, all, that is, ecept for 4 provinces, whigh became (bum bum bum) Transyllvania, which is their vassal.

These guys are awesome. They're reformed and have gotten a string of great monarchs. Plus they have four cultures. FOUR! So far they have'nt done much, but I think I might switch over to playing them at some point. They're just so cool!

Call me an idiot (Go on!) but... you can switch nations... in the middle of a game? How's that done?
On a related note (well...it's IN the game) I want to delete old saved games that've ended... How do I get to the 'coding' of the game?
Zeez! I recall someone saying to delete it from the 'saved game' section... I've never seen the code for the game (so obviously I've never MODded).
Thanks. You can switch nations in the middle of a game!..huh! And can save it seperately... and in effect play ALL 100+ nations through ONE game! One game, 100 outcomes!

All you have to do is save the game, go to the main menu and go into multiplayer, then change your nickname then go back and bring up your saved game in single player and you should be able to choose any nation because your new name isn't locked onto the country you started as

Open up explorer (right click on START and click explorer), go to your EU2 directory (if you don't know where that is you can try right clicking on the shortcut you are using to access the game click "properties" and discover where the shortcut is pointing to, if this is not working, then search for a folder named "Europa Universalis 2") once in the EU2 directory, there are a lot of interesting things to do, for example "db" contains the events, leaders and monarchs, but you were wanting to delete some old saves, so go to the "scenarios folder", go to "save games", find the saves (each save file comes as two, a ".eug.cfg" file, and a ".eug" file.) delete the ones you don't want, the name of the file is the same as the name in game, and voila! you have deleted the old saves.

So in short: Find your EU2 directory
Go to Scenarios
Go to Save Games
Delete files you don't need.

You can choose most nations by rightclicking on your countryshield in the beginning of the game or when loading a savegame. It will bring up a list of nations, pick one.

When loading from a saved game however, you won't be ablle to choose the nations that are marked as majors (the ones that are now greyed out next to the shield). KölcheJungs answer solves this (and was news to me aswell, so now I won't have to keep editing the save file if I feel like tacking one of thoose). Thanks!

Simply start the gc from the beginning choosing whatever mayor you like. Then load you old save from the new game. Now your the nation you wanted in your old save.

I just found that, as Austria, I could release Germany as a vassal. I think it was two, maybe three provices. Don't remember which ones exactly.

How about Cuman? They can be released by the GH.
