Fun, challenging nation to play

I just finished a GC as Serbia and I'm looking for a small and challenging nation to play in my next GC. I would rate myself as a pretty good Victoria player and I've had success with most of the nations I've played so far.

I dislike too much micromanagement so I don't want to play a nation with a too big population base.

Got any ideas for a fun game?

Has anyone tried civilizing a nation with the new VIP civilization requirements? If so, with which nation(s)?

I play both vanilla and VIP so you don't have to take that in mind.

For civilizing purposes, perhaps Korea or Siam in VIP. Moderate population base (10 mil in KOR, ~4 mil in SIA) but RP growth is based on % of pop either clergy or clerk so convert POPs to clerk, get your literacy going and the VIP boosts to RP generation as a result of rising literacy will close the gap on tech research.

Goal : Be civilized and remain independent by end of the game.

South America nations were always pretty dull to me...Europe is always where it's at. Have you played the Netherlands? Sweden is one of my favorites.

Yes, I have. As the Netherlands I sattelited France and Russia and then noone wanted to attack me for the rest of the game.

Sorry, don't want to make it look like I'm bragging, but I don't feel like Brazil, Argentina and Portugal are enough challenging and rewarding.

I was more thinking of nations like Haiti, Greece or Wallachia.

Siam sounds quite interesting though.

Haiti is hard in VIP, but in Nilla you get to turn them into a delicious immigrant attracting democracy.

Well, the challenge is in the industrialization part IMHO - It is really tough to do it in an efficient manner, since you can't do it without putting your heavily based RGO economy in danger or debt.

I like Annam. My most recent Victoria game was as them. If you are playing vanilla make sure you edit the civilize event though, as it is unreachable otherwise.

EDIT: Carved out an Annamese--Southern Chinese--Laotian--Cambodian--Thai--Burmese--Malaysian empire!

Can someone please post the exact requirements for civilizing in VIP:R? Can't seem to find them on the forums and for some reason the Civilize event under db still show the requirements for civilizing in Vanilla. Does this mean that VIP wasn't installed correctly?

And the reason you are not seeing them in db is because all VIP events, including the Vanilla ones used in VIP, are not referenced from db in the startup file for the scenario but in scenarios/VIPScen/events. Civilizing events are in scenarios/VIPScen/events/vanilla/civilize.txt

Not sure why you think Greece or Wallachia are hard... both of those you can get AI allies to help you very easily. The most difficult country I've played so far was Egypt... Ottmans come after you first, then France, then UK... eventually if you play right you are very powerful but it's a long road from your starting position.

If you're not completly suicidal and decide to play Sikkihm or Bhutan. Ladakh is probably impossible as well (at least now that there hasn't been a Falconhurst AAR for a while).
