I like most of what I'm seeing and while much of the map got an upgrade to the number of duchies, for some reason several parts of Western Europe has even less duchies than before. I figured since the map was getting a lot more granular the number of duchies would go up considerably everywhere, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I also find it weird they've added a lot more cultures, especially subcultures like with Germany, but some cultures like Albanian, Assyrian, Carantanian, Dalmatian and Gothic seemed to have been removed.

I was glad to see they seem to have finally fixed the Caucasus like I once suggested. Although, now Lori is dejure part of the Kingdom (and Duchy) of Georgia for some reason. That doesn't seem quite right, at least not in 1066.

Looking at this again, it seems like the Switzerland area got the axe as well. Looks like both Valais and Waldstätten didn't make the cut, and are impassable mountains now.

Im personally really confused with the huge mountain ranges taking up valuable province space.

England had a bunch of tiny, 2/3 province duchies in CK2, so I'm fine with those being reduced (they made vassal management slightly annoying, and otherwise added fairly little). It still has a very high duchy density (with lots of 2-province duchies). Brittany being a single duchy is a bit surprising though.

On the other hand, Herbert Karling in 1066 now has a nasty surprise with Vermandois being part of Valois (the capital's duchy) rather than Picardy, making becoming duke significantly more difficult.

I suspect that the use of culture for technology means they wanted to limit the number of one/two province cultures (otherwise it would be far too easy to, for example, educate your heir as Albanian and instantly become the cultural head, guaranteed), but at the same time, the HRE really needed something to make it less culturally homogeneous (and hopefully less slightly less stable as a result).

I hope it's not just possible for England to go the historic route and keep a very large number of direct vassals to the king, but also sometimes desirable. England's duchies were just earldoms (counties) renamed to be more important, and even the counties only vaguely resembled in game-counties by the late middle ages.

Brittany being a single duchy is a bit surprising though.
Better than it being made up of two or three essentially fictional duchies ala CK II.

Brittany being one large, powerful duchy is fine - it should have another couple of provinces though. Six isn't enough.

Makes game more tactical and better than high attrition sometimes

Not really.

Having such huge wastelands is just a waste of space.

Having narrow blocking areas is better, but given how much of switzerland is just a singular wasteland is just odd, given how many swiss people live in the valleys between the mountains.

1597068878527.png

these are roughly the positions of the graubunden, wallis/vaud and waldstatte, it's weird to not have these areas, and just have it as a single giant wasteland.

Nope, it was introduced in the Holy Fury update. The Devs said these new cultures (like Arberians or Dalmatians) won't be in CK3 at the release, but they will be probably added in future updates.

The lack of a Duchy of Picardy is sad in France.

It isn't, seeing as Picardy was a geographical term and not a feudal title.

It isn't, seeing as Picardy was a geographical term and not a feudal title.

While true, the problem isn't the fact that it didn't exist as a feudal title.

Many places never acquired the feudal titles that Paradox uses in Crusader Kings.
This however is not a reason to split it between Flanders and Valois.

1597089168722.png

Having a duchy title that is possible to form would be good to group together the counties of Ponthieu, Boulogne, Amiens, while Valois could just be the Oise counties of Beavais, Vermandois, Valois etc.

Another option is to split flanders between Artois and Flanders, but that may cause more issues.

While true, the problem isn't the fact that it didn't exist as a feudal title.

Many places never acquired the feudal titles that Paradox uses in Crusader Kings.
This however is not a reason to split it between Flanders and Valois.

Personally I'm fine with how it is now (on your screenshots) - I much prefer fewer, larger duchies than having loads of smaller ones. That makes no sense, and duchies (or the large counties they can also represent, such as Toulouse and Flanders) didn't work that way.

Also, whoever didn't make Burgundy burgundy is an idiot!

Im fine with larger duchies, but they have to make sense historically.

Flanders only extends as far as Artois, until this was given as a dowry to the French King.

I also rather have the duchy of Valois just be northern ile de france, now it's the entire area of Paris, which would probably be better as the Duchy of Paris.

It's simply more accurate.

I wouldn't worry about Flanders too much as apparently Paradox haven't either - everyone there is going to be French according to the screenshots!

Maybe someone who knows more can correct me on this, but as I look over the map, I also noticed, is "Pontus" seems to jut pretty far south. That seems a little weird to me, I thought it would have only covered north-eastern Anatolia. It seems like there's a duchy or two (one of which I can't quite make out the name of) that maybe would fit better in the dejure "Kingdom of Anatolia" region. I think that's how it was in the last game.
