About 5-6 hours into my current game I realize... I forgot to check "hyperlane only".

I declare a well-planned war, I have defensive emplacements along the entry-routes into my empire... and as soon as war is declared, a fleet moves past everything because they have WARP-drives.... GAH!

Not sure what to do... the entire setting for my playthrough just got screwed over badly.

Well, it's my own fault... trying to make up my mind if to go on or if to restart...

I would probably restart also, but it's fairly rare that i ever finish a game, by then end its more of a chore than anything. You can go on though, kill the nearest fe, and research psi jump like everyone does regardless of starting FTL. Just have to cheese the ai to make them stay in a spot long enough to catch up to them

Role play it. Your empire's scientifics thought that there was only possible hyperlane and then BAM, aliens has another technology, rushing you to a desperate defence and a possible comeback later. This game is too easy(unless you are playing insane and surrounded by avanced hostiles) that you should handle it.

I would restart. You wanted to play the game with a certain flavor and now you can't do that.

You're 5 or 6 hours in. If the average game of Stellaris took 10 hours or something, I'd say go ahead and finish. But it doesn't; it takes way more than that (I've not timed it but probably on the order of 40-60 hours or more). So you are only like 10% of the way into the game. Not enough to be upset about. (Although if I had an awesome start position I might be tempted to continue.)

I thought of roleplaying it differently, but since I was already roleplaying it a certain way I lost too much flavour. I restarted and have not regret it. And this time I KNOW I set it right :D

It's more about how tedious it is to catch any enemy fleets in this game with there being no defences what-so-ever. Having to resort to baiting every single war or to "I jump to your capital system, put a fort in the centre so you warp to it and wait" is beyond stupid.

Forts slow down a mid/late game fleet by about 0.5 of a second.
