Exiled

With Ragnarr II being crowned king after his father's body was found, many of his father's advisors were running around constantly telling Ragnarr II that they would take care of him. However Ragnarr II being quite quick and perceptive realized that they were in fact panicking, although Ragnarr didn't understand why exactly he assumed it had something to do with his uncle for his name was mentioned a lot more lately.

Today Ragnarr's guardian burst into the room telling him that they were escaping to the Norwegian mountains. When Ragnarr II asked why he was told that the Pomeranians were invading with the goal of taking the rest of Mecklenburg. Feeling as though he would be no safer in the mountains Ragnarr simply said that he would stay in Rugard. After that he attended the council meeting were he heard his Marshal arguing with the Steward about raising Mercenaries, and then transporting the Norwegian warriors to defend Rugard.

On this day 30,000 Pomeranians marched into Rugen were they made short work of the 12,000 Defenders. However unafraid and with no were else to go Ragnarr II gave the order for his family to stay within the Castle with him. For his Uncle Harald had arrived a few days ago with a few dozen guards, saying that they would help defend against any siege.

As Ragnarr II slept, one of Haralds guards burst in the room saying that they had to evacuate. Worried Ragnarr quickly followed the guard however instead of going to the secret exits the guard turned towards the main chamber. Seeing this Ragnarr figured that the guard was going to get his siblings, however as soon as Ragnarr turned towards the passage he was grabbed and hauled to the main chamber. There he saw Herald sitting on the throne. Before Ragnarr could speak Herald declared that he was the true king of Norway, and that although he didn't want to kill his brother's child he wouldn't hesitate if Ragnarr didn't hand over the crown.

With this Ragnarr and those loyal to him were hauled onto a ship, were eventually they arrived in Orknö. When asked why he was here the Captain simply said that the Tribal Elder of Orkney was the only vassal willing to give up any land and remain loyal to Ragnarr II.

By now Ragnarr II was old enough to rule without a regent. However he had not forgotten how his uncle betrayed him, vowing to have his vengeance Ragnarr would have to be happy with petty raiding for now.

Well, he might be able to retake the realm from his uncle with his martial stat. I'm hoping to see a new golden age under Ragnarr II.

Return of the Swede

December 14, 1158

Not wanting his Vassal to hold more land then him Ragnarr II demanded that Chief Elder Ale be put directly under his rule. When the Tribal Elder refused Ragnarr, who had already stationed his host outside the Tribal Elder's walls began to carry out a siege. Eventually the Tribal Elder was captured and Elder Ale was put under the control of Ragnarr.

June 10, 1159

Despite no vassal being stronger then Ragnarr II, he wanted someone he could trust to rule the Island of Färöarna. To do this he revoked the Island from Elder Ale and after a brief war, transferred it to his brother Klas.

April 13, 1160

Recently Ragnarr had managed to take prisoner a very beautiful, Scottish girl while raiding. After making her into a concubine he could not stop listening to how passionate she talked about her god. This eventually got Ragnarr thinking about his own beliefs, after all what had Odin or any of the Norse gods done for Ragnarr, or his Grandfather. As even when the Catholics came to take Sweden the Norse gods remained silent.

A few months later Ragnarr made up his mind for the Vision that his Grandfathers, Grandfather had must of been true. Bagge after all was but a mortal man and could not interfere with the Gods, meaning he could never of stopped Odin being killed by the cross. Deciding that Bagge simply misinterpreted the vision Ragnarr handed the title of Fylkir to his brother Klas, and then began the process of being baptized.

October, 30 1160

With Ragnarr II converting to Catholicism, he found that many of the European lords were eager to marry into a prestigious family such as his. Ragnarr made use of this by marrying Matilda Capet, the King of England's daughter. Once the marriage was over, Ragnarr sent a message to the Pope, asking to be given the right to invade the now independent kingdom of Sweden.

Invasion%20of%20Sweden%20granted_zpsvjofoyv5.jpg

Two months later Ragnarr declared war on Sweden, hoping that his father-in-law would accept Ragnarr's call despite both Kingdoms being under Capet rule. Luckily it would appear that the two Capets weren't on the best of terms as the English quickly sent over a host of 10,000 which allowed Ragnarrs small personal host to siege province after province.

Invasion%20of%20Sweden%20by%20Rag%20II_zpsfei7jovk.jpg

June, 8 1163

As the Invasion continued, Ragnarr II was presented with his new son named Karl. Having a deep hatred towards the Capets in Sweden, Ragnarr fought them when ever possible. This eventually lead to a duel against the two brothers, Renaud and Ebbon Capet. Although Ragnarr was outnumbered he quickly killed Renaud, and after quickly turning to meet Ebbon he found him holding his hands up yelling that he yielded, not wanting Ebbon to spend his life hunting Ragnarr down for killing his brother Ragnarr quickly executed him.

Renaud%20and%20Ebbon_zpsnbtl4b3i.jpg

March 28, 1167

Finally the entirety of Capet Sweden was sieged, with this Ragnarr II was willing to accept King Ademar's Surrender. However before doing so Ragnarr gave the order to execute any one that was imprisoned during the war. With the majority of Sweden back in Mäkelä hands, Ragnarr enacted the law calling for Internal peace, and began looking West towards were his Uncle sat.

Have to say sorry to anyone who was hoping for a full Germanic AAR, but I could see no other way to recover (without cheats).

Ragnarr II's unexpected conversion did aid him in the preparations of reclaiming his throne. Yet, such a conversion cannot got unnoticed by his vassals who are probably still following the old ways. I hope he looks out for possible dangers from within that may strike while he is too busy fighting his uncle.

There is only the Hjaltland vassal that is Germanic, as the Fylkir went independent when I converted. Also I sieged all of Sweden so I was able to replace the French Vassals there with Swedish Catholics and was able to keep a large chunk of land for myself. It would also seem that the French had done some good at least for there are a few new holdings/upgrades, and the locals have already mostly been converted.

The Pomeranian Binding

With Sweden once again his, Ragnarr II began distributing the lands, giving the majority away to newly made Nobles. He also restored the Mäkelä mansion at Visby and granted it and the Jarldom of Gotland to his brother, Ingemar. Finally Ragnarr moved his court to Lackö, for he always remembered his father's stories of living there during his childhood. Wanting to keep a strong force loyal to him alone, Ragnarr also kept the counties of: Dal, Narke, Ostergötland, and Uppland. Deciding he had no use for Orknö anymore he gave it away to the mayor of Orkney.

January 5, 1169

While planning his next moves, Ragnarr's son Ingvar was born, and news about a successful Jihad for Andalusia was heard. Knowing his Uncle would likely be worried, Ragnarr prepared to host a Grand tournament hoping that his Uncle would feel as though he had been forgotten. A year later the tournament was held and Andun, one of Ragnarr's kinsman was crowned the victor.

September 27, 1171

A comet had been sighted just recently and although many of the lords were preparing for the worst, the astrologers claimed that it was not a bad omen this time, but rather a message proclaiming the Empires return at the hands of Ragnarr II. Although Ragnarr himself wasn't sure whether to believe it or not, he was glad that the peasants were at least calmed down by this though. As according to them it simply meant some prophecy about how Ragnarr I would return a changed men and restore the lands to there true wealth was proceeding as planned.

December 26, 1174

With Ingvar having recently died in some accident and a crusade for Andalusia being called, Ragnarr figured it would be the perfect time to attack Norway, unfortunately for Ragnarr he would never be able to kill Haraldr himself for Gonorrhea had claimed him two years ago, leaving his daughter in charge.

War%20to%20recap%20Norge_zpso9u8ry4b.jpg

December 24, 1177

The war was easily won, for the majority of the Norwegian vassals didn't want to lend there levis to a Queen. In the end it would cost the Southern Norwegian lords their lands and the Northern lords their freedom. With the war over many of the remaining Norwegian lords converted over to Catholicism, which Ragnarr awared by giving there family members land in the richer south.

March 21, 1178

When Ragnarr heard that his Uncle Ake got married in secret, he feared that Ake wouldn't hesitate to betray him like Haraldr did. To prevent this Ragnarr threw both Ake and his wife into the dungeons. Worried that the Pomeranians would use their Norwegian, and Danish territory as a staging point to attack Sweden, Ragnarr betrothed his heir to Queen Ludmila's only child, princess Berta.

June 29, 1179

Although Berta, had grown up to be quite fat, Ragnarr still went through with the marriage plans, for if Berta remained the only child of Ludmila, Ragnarr's grandchild could end up owning all of Pomerania as well as Sweden.

Talk about some rapid recovery. Ragnarr II is definitely making his father proud. Let's hope his reign remains consistent through his entire lifetime.

Not sure if his father would be proud for abandoning the old ways, but he certainly has recovered from a sorry state.

Recovery is good. But you cant truly abandon the gods can you ?

I'm afraid the old gods appear to be dead, although many Northerners still worship them in secret.

I have played a few rulers ahead by now, and although the faith is preserved, I'am afraid the realm would be torn apart if I converted back in the future. Although I do plan on hopefully creating a few custom vassals with the Germanic religion in the more Germanic parts of the realm so like Iceland, and the more Northern portions when I convert to EU4 using El Dorado's nation creator + console. Just can't promise much Germanic activity in CK2 anymore.

((Convert back in EU4 then ;)))

Wanting to re-establish trade within his realm Ragnarr decides that he'll need to focus more on business then war. However Ragnarr would not forget war, for a few months later he declared war on his ally the King of England for Södermanland. Although Ragnarr knew that at full strength the English could pose a threat currently they had lost a war against France and were still recovering.

December 6, 1182

With the war proceeding favorably, new of a young maid from Tröndelag named Rikissa preaching the word of god has reached Ragnarr's court. Although the Nobles complained that a mere peasant was able to be given a home in Ragnarr's court, Ragnarr ignored them all for after seeing Rikissa's skill at not only combat but command itself he was debating making her a general of his armies.

June 21, 1183

With the recent introduction of the Holy Roman Empire fighting alongside the English, Rikissa asked to see Ragnarr. When they meet she continued to compliment Ragnarr while telling him that he made the right choice abandoning the gods his ancestors worshipped. During the end of the meeting Rikissa declared that she could help Ragnarr lead his armies to victory and eventually mend the realm if only she was made a general. After seeing the determination in her eyes Ragnarr expected her request and put her in charge of a smaller army that had been sieging Sodermanland.

October 18, 1183

With news of the recent victories at the hands of Rikissa, the entire realm had begun to hear the story of the maid from Tröndelag. This may of gave Rikissa the courage to ask Ragnarr about retraining his officers, for currently many of them still followed the old Tradition of letting the enemy cross the Baltic and then attacking. Rikissa proposed that they should march outside of Scandinavia to attack instead of letting the enemy build up in strength. Although hesitant to leave the trusted tactics he knew, Ragnarr could see the advantage in Rikissa's ideas and gave the go ahead.

Although war still waged, it didn't stop the masons and other craftsman from working on large scale construction for during the war the city of Stockholm had finished in Uppland.

With the war almost over, the Clergy began growing even more worried about Rikissa. For as Ragnarr's court Chaplin put it many were afraid that she could threaten their positions. Disregarding the churches concern, Rikissa was allowed to continue leading the army. Although Ragnarr himself wasn't sure if she was just a crazed lunatic or not he would protect her for her story was aspiring many of the population to convert from the Old ways.

December 11, 1184

With the war now over, Ragnarr claimed Sodermanland for himself, and increased the centralization of the realm. However many of the lords of the realm were now coming asking for Rikissa to be removed from the court since she would no longer be needed. To try and end these disputes between the lords of the realm, Ragnarr knighted Rikissa, and then declared war on the Holy Roman Empire to return Smaland to Sweden.

Empire Reborn

March 1, 1187

While Ragnarr's armies sieged down Smaland, news arrived that Rikissa had in fact married. Although Ragnarr started thinking that she had played him for a fool, he still acknowledged it to at least keep the peasants in line. Just a few months later she would give birth to a daughter, and although many peoples view on her changed, she still lead Ragnarr's armies' against the Holy Roman Empire.

February 3, 1189

By now the majority of the realm has moved on from the story of Rikissa. With this and the news of Rikissa's husbands recent death, Ragnarr began plotting to kill his Queen hoping the Rikissa would accept his hand in marriage. It would seem that the Capet Queen was not popular within the realm for Ragnarr found many to help him out and within a month, Queen Matilda died in a manure explosion.

December 23, 1189

With the Rikissa eagerly accepting Ragnarr's hand in marriage she was soon withdrawn from the front out of fear that she would be killed. Shortly after news arrived about a new Empire forming in Eastern Europe. For the Arpad's, of hungary had managed to conquer both the Bulgarian, and Polish Kingdoms, allowing there land to almost reach all the way from the Black Sea to the Baltic itself.

With the Swedish hosts having sieged down to Holstein the Kaiser soon surrendered Smaland. With the realm at peace carpenters in Närke soon approached Ragnarr about him supporting the creation of a Carpenters guild for them. Hoping that it would improve the local economy Ragnarr accepted, giving birth to the Ikea Guild, which would quickly expand across Sweden.

Determined to reclaim some of the lost Finnish lands, Ragnarr declared war on the Kingdom of perm for Karelia. Not wanting to sacrifice more of his own men, Ragnarr recruited the Knights Templar and sent them on there way to fight his war. Three years, later the Templars won giving all of Karelia to Ragnarr, allowing him to usurp the Kingdom of Suomi.

With the kingdom of Suomi in his hands, Ragnarr was able to easily persuade the vassals in Kola to swear their fealty to him, for they had recently been converted to Catholicism by the previous Finnish king. Strangely while touring the country side Ragnarr came across a village, that just last week was quite lively completely deserted. With no trace of the villagers after numerous searches, Ragnarr was forced to accept it as an act of god.

With the English involved in another war else were in Europe and with revolts due to the young English Queen, Ragnarr declared war for the remaining Finnish lands outside of his realm. Although the English did send 5000 men they were quickly wiped out and the war was won two years later.

April 19, 1199

Finally Ragnarr had established claims on the pieces of land held by the Teutonic order in Scandinavia. With these he soon declared war hoping to only need to fight the Teutons once. With the majority of the Teutons holdings being small castles outside Scandinavia, Ragnarr was able to gather the main body of his host in Teutonic Skane and wait for there arrival. Finally on the May 8, 1201 a host of 11,400 Teutons crossed however Ragnarr had hid 5000 of his own men farther back allowing them to reinforce the 10,000 already in Skane after the fight began. When it was over 10,000 of the Knights were dead, allowing Ragnarr to quickly end the war.

July 14, 1201

With the majority of Scandinavia belonging to Ragnarr II, he was able to crown himself an Emperor. However it appeared that his heir Karl did not want to lead a empire as one day later he went to join a Christian Holy order fighting in Iberia, leaving his son Ragnarr III as the new heir. With the empire formed it would appear as though Ragnarr II had nothing left to live for as just a month later he fell asleep ever to be awoken.
