Act I - Orm Væni

Chapter 1 - Oh, Orm?

The Væni dynasty which would go on to have such an impact on the fate of the world first arose in the most unlikely location. The sagas claim that the Væni were founded by a man named Orm of Austrland, who ruled over the eastern half of Iceland in the late 9th century. Nothing is known about Orm's heritage prior to his ascent, the sagas claim that Frey was his father and that as an infant he sprang from a fertile field of wheat with which the god had... relations.

The sagas describe Orm as quick-witted and ambitious. He was just and compassionate to the people over whom he ruled, but a ruthless reaver and raider who would tear through the lands of his foes and make off with anything not nailed down, and even some things which were.
20210626192026_1.jpg

It was on a routine trading mission to the nearby Færeyjar that Orm met Asta. The spymaster of the local chieftain, she was a brash woman twice Orm's age. Asta sized up the newly-minted chieftain of Austrland and challenged him to spar with her. Orm, not wanting to hurt a woman decided to go easy on her, a mistake that revealed to him the first thing he loved about her, her prodigious strength, when she knocked him to the ground in a single blow to the chest. At the feast that night he elected to sit with her rather than in his appointed seat and the two had a deep conversation about their plans and dreams: it was then that Orm discovered the second thing about Asta which he loved: her ambition and drive rivaled even his. The two continued talking deep into the night and, after realizing that they were alone, she revealed the third and final thing which Orm loved about her: her voracious sexual appetite.
20210626192519_1.jpg

In the morning after "becoming a man" Orm went straight to Chieftain Ingólfr and, rather than apologizing for his lack of decorum the night before or actually discussing the details of trade between their peoples as he had initially come there to do, requested Asta's hand in marriage. Ingólfr was taken aback, but agreed.
20210626195736_1.jpg

The happy couple celebrated with a romantic honeymoon in Ireland.
20210626195946_1.jpg

And it was while in Ireland that the two discovered that Asta was already pregnant with their first child, a daughter whom they named Halla.
20210626200925_1.jpg

The trade relations with Færeyjar ultimately broke down and Orm settled on a more... direct method of getting their resources.
20210626201426_1.jpg

A little over a year after the birth of their first child, Asta again gave birth to another: a boy whom the couple named Styrkar.
20210626202238_1.jpg

However, issues with young Styrkar's health quickly became apparent.
20210626202417_1.jpg

On the economic front, though, things were going well, as Orm secured lucrative agreements with the rest of the Northern Isles.
20210626202713_1.jpg

Styrkar wasn't the only member of the fragile dynasty facing health issues, Orm himelf took ill while encamped at Hjaltland.
20210626203142_1.jpg

His courtiers found him a physician named Ylva and, though Orm did not fully trust this Christian to take care of him he knew he had little choice and hired her.
20210626203502_1.jpg

A decision he almost immediately regretted.
20210626203539_1.jpg

Fortunatly, Orm happened to find another candidate, with actual training on his adventures.
20210626203915_1.jpg

Who happily agreed to join his court.
20210626204038_1.jpg

Orm began feeling better almost immediately, and was positive that it was because Ylva was no longer practicing her vile sorcery and superstitions on him.
20210626204236_1.jpg

Recognizing that he now controlled more territory than he could handle directly, Orm proclaimed the Jarldom of the Norðreyjar, and handed control of Hjaltland to his strongest champion to hold as his vassal.

Welcome to AARland! :D

Orm is certainly starting strong out of the gate (metaphorically speaking, disregarding his and his son's illnesses). Hopefully ill health won't undermine his line before it has a chance to take root, because it looks like the Væni clan are well positioned to make themselves known to the wider world.

Welcome to AARland! :) Best of luck on your AAR!

An Iceland start! Quite far away from the usual suspects in Europe. Excited to see which way Orm and his descendants take their fortune. Perhaps join up with the sons of Ragnar and establish a kingdom in Saxon lands? Or maybe head back to the motherland in Scandinavia and unite the Norse tribes... Something to look out for either way

Just got done playing another session and wrote the rough draft of the next chapter! I'll have it posted later today.

An Iceland start! Quite far away from the usual suspects in Europe.
Yep! I knew I wanted to play Norse in Norway, but didn't want to do yet another Haraldr Fairhair campaign and none of the default lords stood out to me, so I decided to make a custom lord and stick him in Iceland. Currently his goal is to unite Norway, but what he does next, and whether his descendants will carry on in his footsteps (assuming they live ;) ) remains to be seen.

Chapter 2 - A-Viking We Shall Go

After taking the Jarldom, Orm decided that the time had come for military reforms. He was still intent on conquering the rest of Iceland and driving the Christians off the island for good, but to do so he would need both more and better troops. He raised two additional companies of Bondí and two companies of Huscarls. Such forces do not come cheap, however, and so another raid began being planned. Before the raid could get off the ground, however, gaelic raiders from the Kingdom of Alba arrived to plunder the Orkneyjar. Orm raised his forces but could not relieve the islands in time.
20210627103816_1.jpg

On the battlefield of love, however, he found much more success, conquering Asta's heart by "saving" her from a definitly-not-staged break-in.
20210627104324_1.jpg

Not a month after allowing his vassal to loot, pillage, and burn the Orkneyjar, King Causantín II MacCináed of Alba had the gall to contact Orm about arranging the kidnapping of his brother. After nearly falling over dead out of rage, the furious Orm finally decided to instruct his messengers to tell the king he accepted the offer. Then, in secret he sent another message to Áed warning him of his wicked brother's plot.
20210627104953_1.jpg

Unfortunatly, word that Orm had warned Áed got back to King Causantín, who took things rather personally, thus beginning a feud between the two rulers.
20210627105347_1.jpg

Young Styrkar, Orm's heir presumptive, ultimatly succumbed to his illness at only two years of age.
20210627105612_1.jpg

With Halla now his only living heir, Orm took the strong young girl under his wing, to teach her the art of warfare.
20210627110310_1.jpg

A mysterious woman from the far-off (and probably fictional) land of "Italy" named Ausilia arrived on Orm's doorstep, requesting asylum. Suspicious of this Christian's motives, Orm agreed to allow her to stay nevertheless. She even agreed to be his concubine in spite of her religious hesitations.
20210627110731_1.jpg

Asta would eventially give birth to a second son, Þorsteinn. Þorsteinn took after his mother and, like his sister, was prodigiously strong even from a young age. Orm prayed all the gods that this son live.
20210627111345_1.jpg

While raiding in Ireland, Orm "met" the Baroness Yrsa. He quickly took her as his concubine as well. The death of Styrkar weighed heavily on his shoulders and now all he could think about was producing as many heirs as he could to keep his line alive.
20210627111841_1.jpg

Lady Essylt of Gwent would become his third concubine.
20210627112120_1.jpg

With very little loot left in Ireland, Orm decided to turn his raiding gaze further south: he would sail further than any norseman had sailed before and bring back exotic treasures to his people.
20210627112351_1.jpg

The men of the south held powerful, unified kingdoms which Orm dared not provoke. He eventually, however, found the land of Tamasna ripe for the plunder.
20210627112848_1.jpg

Halla and Þorsteinn were joined by a new sister, Gerðr. Orm began to relax: it appeared that his line would be safe after all.
20210627113407_1.jpg

Orm was greatly impressed by the magnificent structures in the muslim lands, and the sophistication of their infrastructure. In Melilla, he decided to take many of the locals as slaves to help develop his own lands. He was finally recognized as a true Viking.
20210627113825_1.jpg

Yrsa gave birth to Orm's third son, Ragnarr, while he was away on his raids. Though the boy lacked the strength of Þorsteinn, and as the son of a concubine Ragnarr was regarded as lower than his brother, Orm was pleased with him nonetheless. The house of Væni continued to grow and strengthen.
20210627114150_1.jpg

Though he lacked Orm's natural talent, Þorsteinn was nevertheless proving to be a curious and intellectual child. Rather than train the boy in their people's martial traditions, Orm decided to raise the boy to be an astute scholar.
20210627114401_1.jpg

Ausilia too gave birth to a son, Eilif. Eilif was of remarkably pale complexion, a sign from the gods to be sure, though of what Orm did not know.
20210627135854_1.jpg

The treasures from the south had boosted Orm's reputation and confidence enough that he was able to launch his most ambitious conquest yet: He would seize the entire western half of Iceland in one fell swoop.
20210627115508_1.jpg

Orm laughed when the Christian harlot "Chieftess" Auðr, the so-called "Deep-Minded", knelt before him in submission. All this preparation and it was over in less than a year. Her witch whom his men had vouched for as a healer had failed to kill him and now he sent her and all her ilk into exile. He moved his court to the more hospitable realm of Reykjavik and began plotting his next move.
20210627120155_1.jpg

The gods blessed the newly minted Jarl of Ísland with yet another son: Hjalmar. The house of Væni now had no shortage of potential heirs and Orm could rest easily. His fear after the death of Styrkar seemed a distant memory now, though he still carried a small lock of his late son's hair as a memento.

Lots of kids, and some, ummm, inventive ways to get to the ladies!

Wondering if I should go with fewer screenshots and longer amounts of gameplay per chapter. I'm on chapter 3 and only 12 years into the game. Thinking my next chapter's going to be a bit more experimental in style with more words and fewer pictures.

Chapter 3 - Mixed Loyalties

Orm spent the next few years after his defeat of Auðr securing his rule. He worked on improving the infrastructure of his many holdings, and securing the favor of his vassals, courtiers, and concubines. He launched sporadic raids during this time as well, and began taking stock of his people's homeland in Norway across the sea. Orm was intent on uniting them with their kin; under his own banner, of course.

Two more children joined the ever-expanding Væni household in 881, a pair of twins born to Orm's concubine Yrsa. A girl named Ylva and a boy named Sverker. Though as Orm's eighth and ninth children, and by a concubine no less, it was unlikely that the two would find themselves in positions of particular importance Orm welcomed them into the world with the same open arms he had welcomed Halla thirteen years ago. Orm's joy was shortlived, though. Shortly after her birth, the same affliction which had taken Styrkar down into Helheim all those years ago reared its head again in young Ylva. Orm stayed up late almost every night for months afterward, begging any god who would listen to spare his daughter the fate of her brother. Essyllt, seeing Orm's grief and compassion, felt pity for her captor and for the first time in the years since he had taken her from her homeland agreed to join him in his bed. Though this marked the first time the two of them had lain together, Essyllt nigh-miraculously found herself pregnant from this sole encounter.

When the child was born, Orm went against his instincts and misgivings, and allowed the still-Christian Essyllt to name his latest son after her patron saint. Thus Markus Væni entered the world, a sign of the times that would have been unthinkable to Orm just a few years ago. The Christians had sent a witch to pose as a healer to poison him while he was ill! One whose timing had been so suspicious that Orm secretly wondered if she had been responsible for that illness in the first place. Was he growing soft on them? As he watched Essyllt cradle young Markus, Orm felt a warmth he had not felt since he first watched Asta rock the newborn Halla. Orm wondered if he had fallen in love with her. When he married Asta all those years ago he swore that no matter what he would never love any woman as much as her. He didn't know how long he could keep that oath.
20210627190052_1.jpg

Yrsa gave birth to another son, whom the couple named Bengt. Though he loved all of his children, Orm began to worry about how to take care of all of them. He began setting some of his children up with tutors appropriate to their burgeoning interests, and as Halla was beginning to approach womanhood arranged a betrothal to Jarl Ragnarr Hæsteinnsson of Brittany, forging an alliance between their peoples. The future of his house seemed more secure than ever.
20210627191226_1.jpg

Orm's improving relationship with Essyllt bore fruit once more. She was now regularly joining the Jarl in bed and soon bore him a second son, whom the couple named Rikulfr. Though he still loved Asta more than life itself, Orm felt increasingly conflicted about this Christian who now joined him just as often as his wife. What were they? Orm could not shake the feeling that whatever they were, their relationship was now something more than just the lord and his concubine.

At the wedding between Halla and Ragnarr, Orm and his eldest son Þorsteinn were introduced to Ragnarr's younger sister, Alfrið. As she was less than a year older than Þorsteinn, Ragnarr suggested that the two of them be betrothed, to further cement ties between the houses of Væni and Hæsteining. Orm agreed, and the alliance was further strengthened.

Essyllt finally revealed that she truly reciprocated Orm's feelings for her. One night she invited him into her own chambers, and there demonstrated her love for Orm. The two of them lay together for what felt like an eternity, taking Orm back to that magical night with Asta. He truly loved this woman, and she loved him.
20210627194200_1.jpg

This newfound joy was cut short. Dark whispers circulated the halls of Reykjavík, and soon Orm became aware of why: there was a plot to take his life, though who was behind it and why remained a mystery. Who could possibly want the man who had brought the people of the Northern Isles so much prestiege and prosperity dead?
20210627194553_1.jpg

Essyllt's third child by Orm, a son whom she named Jon, marked the thirteenth child born to the now truly prolific Orm, who was only 35 years of age by that point. Nevertheless, Orm was unable to celebrate the birth of this child as he had in the past, his mind preoccupied with learning who it was that wanted him dead, and why. He would not have to wait long for an answer...

Chapter 4 - A Change of Plans

The news that someone sought his death struck Orm hard. He had tried his best to be a benevolent ruler: he had brought slaves and treasures from lands not even dreamt of by the skalds. He had built roads and trading ports. He had united the northern Isles and ushered in an age of prosperity. And yet someone wanted him dead for this. He hired the best spymaster in his realm, a man named Þorgil. Soon Þorgil had the answer Orm sought, and the scheme quickly unraveled.
20210627195503_1.jpg

Causantín. Of course it was Causantín. Though Orm had barely spared a thought for the vile and duplicitous king of Alba, this was clearly not mutual. Ever since Orm had alerted Áed to his treacherous snake of a brother's intentions, Causantín had stewed at how Orm had dared act underhanded in his good and wholesome attempted kidnapping. Orm sent the head of Causantín's agent in this roguery back to Alba in a box. If it was violence that the king wanted, it was violence that he would have.

Orm knew he would have to act quickly, his agents informed him that Jarl Barid Ivarsson of the Suðreyjar already sought to take the throne of Alba for himself. Orm ordered his troops to Orkney, where they would launch their invasion immediately.
20210628120149_1.jpg

Jarl Ragnarr Hæsteinnsson of Brittany eagerly joined Orm's war on Causantín. With each man alone commanding more troops than the Alban king, and plenty of loot from Orm's travels to hire mercenaries should it come to that, they launched their assault without delay. Orm and his troops stormed through Fife and Gowrie, quickly taking both regions without incident. Word reached them, however, that Causantín had landed his troops in Orkney before they could make any further progress. Orm landed his troops to relieve the besieged island, and his superior numbers quickly won the day, even with having to make an amphibious assault. The war effectively ended that day. It was ironic, really. It was in aiding Causantín's brother that Orm had found himself in this mess; and now that same brother, whom he had taken captive in the aftermath of the battle of Orkney, would aid him in getting out of it. With his heir captured, and his capital under occupation, Causantín had no choice but to surrender. On the Stone of Scone, on the feast of St. Stephen, the king of Alba gave his crown to this heathen from the north.
20210628122028_1.jpg

Orm, who twenty years ago had been naught but a chieftain in eastern Iceland, was now the official King of Scotland. He truly felt that his reign must have been blessed by higher powers. As befitted a king, he raised his authority. His divine right to rule was now recognized by all of his subjects. With his newfound title came certain obligations. Orm was a compassionate ruler, after all, and understood that the ancient laws of Tanistry would be expected by his Scottish subjects. He nominated his eldest living son Þorsteinn as his heir to the throne, and the electors dutifully ratified his decision.
20210628122612_1.jpg

Though he now controlled the throne of Scotland, Orm held no actual territory in his new kingdom. A compassionate man through and through, he had allowed all of his new subjects, even the hated Causantín to keep their holdings. However, he knew that in order to truly cement his rule, he would need to move his capital into Scottish territory. He identified Edinburgh, in the jarldom of Lothian to the south, as his ideal new capital, but it was then held by Jarl Sigtrygg, a son of the masterful raider Ivar the Boneless, and was allied with the Suðreyjar. Though Orm could readily take on either one of the two, he was less confident in his ability to take on both at that moment, and consigned himself to consolidating his rule. Though he desired to raid to the south once more, he withheld his forces, allowing them to recover. He would need them at full strength to conquer Lothian. His courtiers, meanwhile, whispered among themselves about this sudden change of course. Why was he no longer interested in uniting their peoples? Why was he so focused on conquering these Christians to the south? Certainly they had plenty of wealth, but he was allowing them to keep it. What was he playing at? And what would Orm do next?

Chapter 5 - One Small Misstep

Tragic news reached Orm late one night. A messenger from Brittany burst into the king's chambers to inform him that his firstborn child, sweet Halla, had died in childbirth. Orm ordered a week of mourning among all of his subjects. The pagans amongst them were to make sacrifice to Hel to give her a place of honor and to nourish her spirit. At Essyllt's urging he exempted the Christians of his realm from needing to do so, instead asking that they hold vigils and masses in her honor. Orm was barely seen for the next couple weeks, and those who did see him did their best not to comment on the king's matted hair, unkempt beard, and eyes red from crying.
20210629112342_1.jpg

Orm, eager to maintain the strong alliance between their peoples, arranged for his second daughter, Gerðr to take Halla's place as Jarl Ragnarr's wife. Though the girl was only 13 and would need time to mature before joining her new husband, Ragnarr Hæsteinnsson agreed. Soon he called on Orm to return the favor of taking the Scottish throne and join him in a war on Wessex over the Earldom of Léon. Though it would mean putting his plans for Lothian on hold, Orm agreed. Lothian and the Suðreyjar had found themselves at war against Northumbria and Jórvík and he hoped that it would exhaust the two of them to make his conquest easier when he returned from the south. Wessex was allied with the nearby High Chiefdom of Ulster, in the north of Ireland, so Orm decided that neutralizing them would be his first priority in the war. Ulster fell without incident, and Orm moved on to Wessex proper. The war was won without a single costly battle, exactly as Orm had hoped. Even better, Lothian and the Suðreyjar had become exhausted in their now-multiple wars, and Orm moved in to snatch his prize.
20210629115911_1.jpg

The war was over quickly. As Orm's men flooded into the conquered Edinburgh, two of Bragi's sons were located and captured. With these hostages in hand, Orm was able to secure an immediate and unconditional surrender. Unfortunately for Orm's plans, his court refused to move again, and he would remain in Reykjavík for the time being.
20210629120358_1.jpg

Putting to ease the worries of his naysayers, with the Scottish threat out of the way, Orm once more turned his sights on his plans to unite his people. His worldview expanded, he resolved that he would take control of the entire North Sea. Orm's forces established their beachhead in Hörðaland. From there they would spread out to conqyuer the rest of Norway. Meanwhile, Orm built up good relations with the Kingdom of Sweden, who posed a risk of being his main rivals in Scandinavia, bu marrying his son Hjalmar to the princess Sara Björnsdottir af Munsö. Though it would be some years before the betrothal could be fulfilled, Orm hoped that this would, at the very least, keep the Swedes out of his way.

Orm's conquest of Norway was put on hold as he was dragged into a war on the continent. He committed a token force to the effort, not wanting to lose his manpower which he would need to continue his quest, and landed in Vestfreisland. It was there that his forces would unfortunately be overwhelmed, and lose a disastrous battle, which cost Orm his leg and left him seriously wounded.

Happy news reached his ears as he mustered his forces: he had a grandson. Young Alfgeir was born to Þorsteinn and his wife, Alfrið Hæsteinnsdottir. If all went well, then even if Orm did end up succumbing to his wounds, he could rest in peace knowing that the Væni line would live to see another generation.

Orm succumbed to his wounds at the age of 49. The throne passed, intact, to his son Þorsteinn. Though he never got to see his dreams and ambitions fulfilled, his impact on the world was undeniable, and, as the 26-year-old Þorsteinn sat atop the sacred Stone of Scone, he knew that his father left some large shoes to fill.

A smooth succession is a rare and valuable gift.
