A successful Crusade! Well done, even if you didn't receive the prize yourself. Maybe Brittany will be able to hold onto the territory.

Æthelstan III seems like a good heir, and his wife is strong. Hopefully that'll be passed on.

Other than that strong trait, the (likely) future Queen Iudhent seems like a rather unlikable person. Here's hoping she gets sidelined during Æthelstan III's reign, should it come to that.

I was very surprised at how well it went! My hopping from place to place actually seemed to confuse the AI, and its massive armies were whittled down.

He is a very good heir, most of the children of Æthelstan seem reasonably well off.

Other than that strong trait, the (likely) future Queen Iudhent seems like a rather unlikable person. Here's hoping she gets sidelined during Æthelstan III's reign, should it come to that.

But England is now allied with Brittany! Of course, England is no longer ruled by a Breton so it isn't quite as significant.

Good to see a part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, back in Christian hands! I think it made sense from a RP perspective to give the kingdom to Brittany anyway, hopefully they will be able to keep hold of it this rime though (maybe with your help now that you are allied?)

Really? I mentioned it in my first comment in this thread as a joke.
Good job on the revolt success as well as the successful build-up of your powerbase. Are you upgrading your holdings?

So you're going to name a child Donkey Kong Master? :p

Anyways, congrats on your current progress. What is your next goal: Scotland or France?

Chapter 19 - 1211 to 1216: Ireland

Over 6 hundred leagues away from Norfolk, in the mountainous county of Monreal in the Holy Land, Monreal Castles falls in the last few months before the year 1211. As the defeated Emir is marched out under the flag of surrender, the English army surrounding him cheers in jubilation. They have been in the land for nearly 8 years, and hundreds had died of famine and disease while fighting the infidels. Two other English armies of equal strength (about 4 thousand men) are besieging castles in the neighboring county of Beersheb and the coastal county of Ascalon. As the army, led by the English King Æthelstan II, readies itself to move and take the city Hurmniz, word arrives that Caliph Ashraf of Fatimid has finally surrendered to Pope Victor III, handing over his hold of the Holy Land. The land is given to its rightful ruler, King Konan II of Brittany, and the defeated Arab Emirs are forced to relinquish control. The three English armies are ordered to the port in the City of Harbijah, Ascalon, where they will be loaded once more into the fleets that brought them here, only this time the destination will be England.

The army is aboard the fleet by February, and the fleets set sail for home. On the way back, the fleet stops in Brittany, where King Æthelstan learns the Konan has given his youngest brother the Kingdom of Jerusalem. However, he has kept 3 counties in the Holy Lands as part of Brittany. This means that Brittany and Jerusalem are now two separate entities.

gaPvffU.jpg

EXGMyzJ.jpg

They arrive in Cornwall in June. There, the army disbands and the fleets are sent back to their home harbors. The Crusade was unbelievably successful for England. To celebrate the victories seen in the Crusade, Æthelstan announces the holding of a Grand Tournament in Thetford, and encourages all brave men of England to participate.

IzIMayI.jpg

The tournament is a very popular event, with tens of thousands of spectators and hundreds of participants. In fact, Æthelstan's nephew Beornwulf wins third place. In honor of his courage and strength, Beornwulf is made Marshal of England.

8C7y3yj.jpg
AzVIgIK.jpg

The year 1212 passes peacefully and quiet, until 1213 when news arrives from the Mediterranean that the Fatimids, while having lost control over Jerusalem, succeeded in their Jihad to take Sicily.

dcDJwS4.jpg

More bad news arrives in April of 1213. Jerkera, daughter of King Breselueu and Queen of France has died of Pneumonia.

BrejEsk.jpg

When Æthelstan had first arrived back from the Crusade, he had sent Chancellor Cearl to Ireland in the interest of expanding English lands westward. By 1215, the work paid off as Cearl sends word that he managed to scrap together a feasible claim on the county of Laigin. The main reason Æthelstan has to expand into Ireland is the increased Scottish presence on the island. In the last century, Scottish territory has grown to engulf much of Northern Ireland.

wQSibFS.jpg

In June, Æthelstan declares war on the Count of Laigin. He raises 6 thousand levies from his personal demesne and sends them to Wales to begin commute to Ireland. Within a month, an Irish army of 2 thousand lands in Wales and is engaged by the English in Ludlow. It is a victory for the English, and the army captures or kills all the survivors. They then move to Wales and cross to Laigin by October.

cG2sEnv.jpg

At the same time, rumors spread through Europe and reach England in August of 1215. They speak of a threat from the East, a Khan who has gathered together an army of unheard of size.

sae15jA.jpg

In March of 1216, Chancellor Cearl, eldest son of Densley Blair, dies a natural death at the age of 66. While he never was given the opportunity to rule England, his Diplomacy skill was second only to his uncle, the legendary Duke Attalus. His replacement as Chancellor is chosen as DKM, Duke of Gwynedd and son of Breselueu.

In July, the Castle of Laigin falls and the Count surrenders.

England now has a foothold in Ireland...

A weird choice from the Breton AI to split up the kingdom like that. I wonder if the Mongols will manage to reach Jerusalem, or offer expansion options for the kingdom.

Good to see that you now have a foothold for further expansion in Ireland! Scotland has conquered a lot over there though, so conflict might be inevitable.

Brittany and Jerusalem have some interesting borders now... I wonder how long until they get straightened out.

A foothold in Ireland is good. Is Scotland stronger than England? They seem to have a significant presence in Ireland.

The Mongols are coming... Hopefully the AI can deal with them. It wouldn't be good for them to conquer half the known world.

They are getting more and more powerful. Eventually something will happen, but I lost my claim on the Kingdom of Scotland some time ago.

A foothold in Ireland is good. Is Scotland stronger than England? They seem to have a significant presence in Ireland.

I don't think Scotland is stronger than England. By the number of troops they pitted against the various Irish lords, I would say England has a larger army (total of about 22K English levies I think).

Ah, a great shame to see Cearl go. Who is head of the Densley branch now?

Next update, instead of having the usually intro that covers a little of what happened the time before, I think I will go over a few of the de Gaels not recently covered.

So now we're taking Ireland. England and Scotland war again when?

Soooon...

I wonder... you said that Necro had a daughter before she died? What happened to her? Also, how powerful is Scotland? It looks like they'll be a problem soon.

See my responses to TheAnguishedOne and Densley

Chapter 19.5 - 1216: A Brief Overview of House De Gael

Æthelstan II de Gael, son of Æthelstan I, son of King Loup, is the current King of England. He has four living children, the eldest having died in 1203. His second child is named Æthelstan as well, and he is heir to England and East Anglia. He and his siblings currently control no land. King Æthelstan II has 4 living siblings (one of his brothers died in 1209), none of whom control land, although his sister Sæthryth is Duchess of Gwynedd, married to the Duke, who happens to be DKM, son of Breselueu.

FUaMsom.jpg

After the death of Duke Cearl of Essex, son of Densley Blair, Cearl's son Tanet inherited the Duchy of Essex. Tanet currently has no children, but he has 4 siblings.

LNGHk04.jpg

When King Breselueu passed away in 1202, the crown was moved to another branch of the family. In his lifetime, he had 6 children. His first, Blitz the Dragon, is 46 and lives in Thetford, Norfolk with her husband Assiuc. She has three children, all de Gael.

gGRmhWv.jpg

Jerkera, the second oldest daughter of Breselueu, died in 1213, leaving behind 4 children. She was married to the former King of France and her children are considered to be Capetian. Her oldest daughter is now Queen of Scotland.

Ul2J03z.jpg

DKM is the oldest son of Breselueu. He is currently the Duke of Gwynedd, married to King Æthelstan's sister. He has four children, including a bastard daughter with one of his courtiers.

uzMsBXn.jpg

Rhifnaw, twin brother of DKM, though overshadowed due to his stuttering speech, lost his Duchy (Deheubarth) and eventually his county to his former vassal. Since then, he has moved to his brother's court in Gwynedd, becoming a commander there. A poor one, but still a commander.

Ztkw0Yt.jpg

Idhrendura is married to Prince Othon of France. She has one child of House Capet, who is a commander of France.

7XhP6P8.jpg

Her twin sister, Necro Creature, died in 1201. Her husband, Martin Billung, died 2 years later under suspicious circumstances, although no blame was ever placed. She and her husband had one child, a daughter named Arganteila. She died a year after Necro passed away at the age of 1.

ofcNiKw.jpg

Lastly, Duke Attalus' grandson, Earl Attalus of Oxford, is now 64 years old. He had 4 children, but 3 passed away fairly young. They all left children, though, the most successful of which is now Duke of Powys.

smUEFam.jpg

In the Kingdom of England, the number of Godwin rulers who directly serve King Æthelstan II, and control a county or Duchy, is 3. The number of de Gael is 3 (though the King would make 4). The rest of the vassals are split between House Henry (3), Hwicce (1), Bacon (1), Hayles (1), Percy (1), and Ua Cheinnselaig (1). Since 1066, all rulers of England have either been of Godwin (2), Hayles (3), Henry (1), or de Gael (3). Before that, it was only Houses Wessex and Knytling controlling the crown.

TQRf87X.jpg

NOTE:
-This is a very literal update. People were asking for some news of certain characters or branches of the family.
-I threw in some stuff about the breakup of Vassals' and Kings' dynasties because I find it pretty interesting. Who wouldn't want to be of House Bacon?? :)
