From Doomdark: "You should have to rely on integrated aliens." So we can't be truly xenophobic?

I guess you can always waste few years, roaming the galaxy for sister planets to your home world.

I figure a xenophobic empire would either have to rely on slavery/Robots, or they will have to avoid the "bad" planets and only have mining stations on them. I think (hope) you will still be able to manage the same number of worlds, only that you will be more spread out (since you only can use a smaller range of world types).

Isn't there an option to genetically modify some of the population of your Empire in order to colonize harsh environments? Either that or go the cybernetic route I guess.

I agree with this design decision. Having every planet (as well as gas giants and asteroid belts) terraformed into garden worlds like other 4x games gets repetitive and boring quickly.

If you are going to purge everything and forfeit robots or slaves, you are effectively handicapping yourself. I think it's doable, but might not be as fun as Warhammer would make you believe.

From the video today with Quill18 here at 23:40.

The way I am interpreting this: it sounds like Doomdark is saying that all players have to rely on aliens (or robots) being integrated in their society to some extent in order to populate worlds that your primary race wouldn't be happy on.

I'm just curious about how far that integration has to go. If you wanted to roleplay a truly xenophobic empire (meaning no aliens and no robots, just the shining beacon of your primary race), would you be at a complete crippling disadvantage for colonizing these types of worlds or trying to avoid them all together? Is there no possibility of your primary race developing or evolving ways to be happier on a harsh planet?

It puzzles me because Henrik's wording might indicate that this playstyle is either objectively unplayable, or so inefficient in comparison to your neighbors and rivals that it may as well be unplayable. That would be a disappointment for people who had ideas of warhammer-style xenophobia for some games.

DLC will most probably come out in which you could give out or charter those worlds to corporations/factions within your empire. Something along the estates in EU4.

Isn't xenophobic tied with phenotypes rather than species? Like, xenophobic humans will hate less on other mammals. That might provide some more POPs.

Overall i didn't understand it to be that you depend on other species being equals as much as you depend on other species to produce stuff for you, slaves or not.

Well ,first of all, there's robots as everyone else also said (which i don't see why any of the ethos would be opposed to)
Secondly, we know that we can augment our citizens, but we don't know whether it applies to all citizens of the race you are augmenting, or just some
Thirdly, we know that our pops can (sometimes) augment themselves, and that would create a "sub-species" which probably wouldn't go down well if one of both of them are xenophobic...
(but we don't know if it creates sub-species when WE augment our citizens, so that could also be a problem for xenophobes)
Fourthly... xeno-slavery....

i think "xenophobia" (which is a modifier all species have, some just have more or less depending on ethos) have to do with how large the impact of ethos divergence is on opinion and pop happiness, in addition to species difference.

I'm not plannig to go xenophobe with my empire but it would be really immersion breaking for xenophobe empires to have alien citizens. So I really hope you can substitute them completly with robots.

you probably can, that would only make the potential A.I uprising that much more disastrous for your empire, but i see where you're coming from

Well, it's all good and well if you choose to be purist xenophobic but you have to pay the price. Specifically if your ocean-loving Molluscoid fellow citi....errr... subjects find lava worlds unlikeable (which could be quite understandable), what are you going to do ?
Your options are: Artificial beings, Terraforming or Alien lava-compatible workforce. Or do not colonize lava worlds.
Choices: the game already tastes good.

IIRC your own species can mutate and develop new genetic traits when exposed to alien planets which might cause them to feel different and thus rebel.

If you can have parts of your population evolve/be genetically enhanced into like a sub-species that don't get the xenophobia malus that would be great and should profit you in the long-term while being a total pain for you in the short-term compared to just enslaving primitive species to your will.

I very HIGHLY doubt that xenophobic pops don't have a problem with "mutants"... i'm just saying based off of IRL human xenophobia, it doesn't take a lot for people who are already predisposed to be xenophobic to start blaming a "different" group for every problem under the sun.

I believe the Empire in Star Wars Legends was pretty damn xenophobic, regularly exterminating and genociding alien species while being pretty tolerant towards near-human(evolved from humanity) races. Maybe xenophobic sub-species should have a small opinion malus towards each that could possibly be removed with a cultural tech.

Xenophobes will generally enslave other spices, and they have much easier time finding reasons for wars with other species but they will need a powerful military to keep xenos in line.

Xenophiles will probably draw immigration from other empires, and foregine species will not cause much trouble.

By the way, it should also be mentioned that most ethnic-racial conflict is due to land disputes. If you have each sub-species confined rougly by the type of planet they are genetically pre-disposed to live in then there should be little interracial hatred. A arctic sub-species of humanity living in a ice world won't hate a desert sub-species of humanity living on a barren world and a aquatic sub-species living on a 95%+ sea world won't hate the base sub-species living on a garden world, etc. They look and speak in a similiar way and they don't desire the lands and resources of the other sub-species because of how hard it is to live on their territory so there is no reason for them to fight them.

One thing to keep in mind is that xenophobia can be a fear or hatred of the foreign and unknown. A xenophobic race could very much utilize a hated enemy as slave labor to benefit off their backs without violating their ethos one bit.

Plus not being able to colonize as many planets as efficiently isn't "objectively unplayable", it just means you won't be as powerful as you may could have been, but on the other hand you would have to deal with far less political strife and may yet be more powerful than someone who did try to integrate every species and colonize every world and wound up wracked with civil wars and in debt from colonial maintenance (assuming that's even a thing.)

Basically, deciding to play as a race that doesn't interact with other races is the same kind of disadvantage as playing a peaceful race and never building more than 1/4th your fleet cap (assuming there's one of those), or only building the smallest class of ship due to agoraphobia. You won't instantly see the game over screen, you may even win if you put enough work into it, but it's not going to be easy and it shouldn't be easy. There's a difference, I believe, between having everything be viable and having everything be optimal.

While I consider it a great feature that you can have alien populations in your empire it would feel odd if every major empire was multi-species. I want nazi genocidal pure-breed klingons to come nuke my planets :)
